Good Work Environment
Cashier (Former Employee) - Sterling, VA - June 3, 2021
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedThe people there were very kind and understanding! As a cashier (under 18) I would mainly ring people up for non fabric items and to put away unused fabric. If you are under 18 you cannot cut fabric which is a big part of what people come there for. While it was nice working there, there wasn’t much to do since people were mainly buying fabric.
Pros
Very nice management
Cons
Not very much to do

Too many duties
Cashier (Current Employee) - Maryland - November 7, 2023
Too many duties for one worker. They expect one person to complete multiple things at a time. One cashier and there is always a long line. They need to put more people on the schedule

Easy Going
Cashier (Former Employee) - Greenfield, WI - November 1, 2023
Easy job to get the hang of, coworkers were always helpful when training and were always nice. Customers were a bit of a handful but that is any job these days.

Okay place to work
Cashier (Former Employee) - Tucson, AZ - September 6, 2023
It was a fun workplace, but you don't get many hours. management was not the best and it was unrealistic some of the things they wanted you to do being the only cashier at times.

Busy busy busy
Very busy at times and not a lot of staff, but the team is great. The customers are often rude. You will find yourself doing multiple things at once a lot.

I wouldn't recommend working at Joann fabric. It was a terrible experience that I walked away from.
Cashier (Former Employee) - Puyallup, WA - September 1, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Employee discount because I am a crafter What is the most stressful part about working at the company? I was asked to arrive earlier than my written availability once hired, unhelpful and rude coworkers, poor management. My store manager the only male on staff did not refer to the floor managers as such, only my fellow coworkers with seniority. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Cold, unhelpful, unfriendly, lack of teamwork, lack of direction. Overall lousy. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Show up by 8:45 to open store at 9am (I said my availability was 10 am). Work for several hours: maybe as cashier, maybe stocker, maybe a floater. I worked part time so I got 2 15 minute breaks, bit no lunch (6 hour days). A couple days I was never relieved for my break, and was repemamded as though my fault.

Jobs at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
Cashier positionsFun, creative but tends to go flat after a while
Cashier (Former Employee) - Lawton, OK - August 8, 2023
If you like relaxed environments that tend to get busy after a while its a job for you. Working there I loved my managers but sometimes it got tense... and thats what made me leave the job. I didn't want to leave but I constantly felt the pressure of others and there were only three that made me feel relaxed. It can be slow on some days, fast on others, you are expected to multitask which means: Customer service while doing stocking and recovering and it gets overwhelming when you don't have the support you need. Another thing to be mindful of is when your working nights, there's only two workers while in day shifts there could be three or more. So at night shifts dont expect alot of help... You don't get a lot of hours either and you only get one lunch or one 15 minute. Training could be way better because you will be expected to learn rather quickly and put on your own near day three or four working there, though its easy to learn, training could be better. But I recommend it to those who love creativity and like those sorts of challenges. If per change my old managers read this, I hope you guys know I appreciate everything you done for me, even if it got tense sometimes. I will always consider those managers who made me feel comforted my friends now.

It was ok
Cashier (Former Employee) - Naperville, IL - July 27, 2023
Very busy, most employees were nice, as were the customers. It was a typical retail job, low pay, lots of work. They honor breaks and time off which is nice

Super Chill Atmosphere
Cashier (Former Employee) - Port Richey, FL - July 21, 2023
Despite pretty low pay, this was easily the most relaxed retail/customer service job I’ve had. You don’t need to worry about being super fast, coworkers are cool and customers are for the most part extremely nice and sweet. If you like crafting, art, sewing, baking, or just home decor then the general store duties like stocking can be fun. You should expect the store to be kind of understaffed (generally 3 people in the store at a time— manager, cutting counter person, and cashier) but it’s manageable because it doesn’t get super busy unless it’s the holiday season. The 30% employee discount (even on sale items) is really nice as well.

Boring job, fun co workers
Cashier (Former Employee) - Temecula, CA - July 11, 2023
The job itself is fairly cut and paste and the managers werent the best. The coworkers made up for it on most days. ESPECIALLY when it comes to the occasional rude customer.

Great way to make new friends within a company
Cashier (Current Employee) - Hanover, MA - June 30, 2023
I mainly started working at Joann’s due to my love of sewing, and it turns out you can make friends there as well, and even if I’m one of the youngest people on my team, I still feel included.
Pros
30% employee discounts
Cons
Some annoying customers

Easy job—bad pay
Cashier (Current Employee) - Hudson, OH - June 11, 2023
Pay is well below what other similar jobs are paying. Also when I got hired, I found out they started me at a rate that was higher than the people training me who had been there for years. I was actively encourage to not discuss my wages with my co workers and part of the training was a document that discouraged workers from unionizing. It’s an easy job, nice people, and overall I’m happy. There’s just a lot of bugs in the overall system there. Also all the tech is super outdated
Pros
Nice coworkers
Cons
Bad pay

Life changing job for me
Cashier (Former Employee) - Winter Haven, FL - May 23, 2023
The culture, specifically at the Joann’s that I worked at, was so strong and powerful. Store manager is an absolute angel and the coworkers are amazing. You learn a lot from the customers but you sure do need to know how to speak clearly and understanding. I felt a lot of love working here. The downside was the pay and security. Work got stressful really quick and the pay didn’t match that at all. It felt like corporate didn’t really care much about our store or acknowledge the employees. It got to the point where that really drained me a-lot (and everyone working there as-well). Overall the interaction strengthen my customer service and i met alot of kind souls along the way ! This job is definitely a ride but i would for sure recommend!
Pros
Flexible, Proper breaks
Cons
Pay, No recognition

Productive and Fun
Cashier (Former Employee) - Riverside, CA - May 17, 2023
Good place to work. It wasnt very difficult and the management was okay. The only downside was the lack of hours. Other than that its a good job. Though its only $15 an hour.

Could be worse.
Cashier (Former Employee) - Missoula, MT - May 15, 2023
Pleasant enough job if you don’t mind the frequent bigotry from the older customers. Pay wasn’t entirely sufficient, but nothing is in Montana. Not a lot of room for growth.
