But if a mixed bag

A good place to work. Spent a lot of time on my feet. Managers were nice, if not a little overbearing about e-mail acquisition. Toughest part was dealing with the inconsiderate customers, but most customers are very nice.

Fun Job but Company sucks

Customers were awful and unpaitient. I got more hours during holiday season but only worked 10 hours or less a week during the rest of the year. Pay is minimum wage. Honestly not worth it for all the extra stuff you have to do. Wouldn't work here again.

Productive and tiring with underpaid and understaffed workers.

In general, I would say I had a neutral experience with Joanns. I think it really depends on the location. For me, the most rewarding part of the job was being able to actually have an impact on peoples lives. Being able to teach people a new skill or help them with their projects is invaluable. However, we were understaffed constantly so all the workers were stretched thin. Many customers would get angry at us for this. Additionally, we were required to ask for people's emails and phone numbers before each transaction. However, unlike other retail establishments, there was no benefit for the customers for giving this information. Thus, many customers would become angry at us for asking.

Pros

Free expired candy, creative people, great learning experience for crafters.

Cons

Understaffed, underpaid, no hours.

Miss my store

Worked with a great group of ladies at my store. The management team at the adore was awesome! The cooperate management was typical big company management.

It's not worth the money.

For what you have to deal with and go through, the pay is WAY below what it should be. You have to do everything and even then if you don't finish it you stay after your designated time to get off and finish it.

Pros

30% employee discount

Cons

3/4 of the people there will lie and try to get you fired

Overworked and little pay.

What is the best part of working at the company? If you love sewing or crafts, this is the place to shop. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? You are paid minimum wage and work your butt off. They do not pay well at all. What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Stressful, chaotic overwhelming. I did not like the management team at all. What is a typical day like for you at the company? You stand at the cutting counter cutting fabric for 8 hours a day. Just like an assembly line.

It was fun while it lasted

The people at joann were great. Management and coworkers were awesome and fun to be around, and surprisingly most customers were cool too. But the pay is just really bad and you're on your feet the entire shift. Schedule is never consistent. They want you to have open availability, but outside of the busy season you'll maybe get 4 hours per week if anything at all. I could go on all day about what makes the job bad, but if you can handle all the negatives and like crafting then it's okay for a 1st time job or unpredictable side hustle at least until the company goes under.

Your average retail job with extremely low pay

I was hired as a stocker, but quickly moved to lots of different jobs. Cut counter, POG, receiving, whatever they need me for. It’s an ok job to have if you’re a student or working other jobs and need flexible hours from week to week. Hours often get cut and scheduling is incredibly unpredictable from week to week. One week I’ll have 25 hrs, the next I’ll have 10. At the cut counter you’re expected to help customers with extremely specific questions and advise on fabric choices, which requires a fair bit of background knowledge and expertise that doesn’t line up with the pay rate. Other than the flexibility the reason I’ve stayed is the management. My store manager is kind and encouraging and I have great coworkers. It’s the higher up management that I have issues with. They pay us next to nothing and are constantly cutting hours, meanwhile the district managers come in and tell us how bad the store looks like it’s our fault we’re understaffed and don’t have time to recover.

Pros

Cool coworkers

Cons

Low pay

A lot of work for little pay.

Stores are extremely understaffed. It is usually just me and one other person running the entire store. I do not think the extremely low pay justifies the amount of tasks I am expected to juggle each day.

Fun workplace yet boring.

Working here is really fun with my coworkers and talking to the customers. However, as a cashier of course it is INSANELY boring. Extremely repetitive, and you're rarely ever scheduled for the cutting counter or recovery as a cashier. Ive worked here for a year and it hasn't mentally changed for me. Very boring, but the co-workers are the best part.

Great job for students

If it’s your first job then Joann’s is perfect. They are flexible with your schedule and hire quickly. Only downside is the hours per week are split evenly between team members and sometimes u may get less than 10 hours a week depending on availability and hours they have to give for the week

Working here just makes me sad.

Most days you only get 4-5.5 hours because of you got 6 you get a 30min break. Management has unrealistic expectations of how much work you can get done. Normally the store only has 1 employee at each spot: cutbar, registers, manager, and recovery.

Pros

30% off discount, co-workers are nice

Cons

short or no breaks at all, unrealistic expectations from store and district manager

Only a good place to work if there's good management

It's just one of those places where if the management isn't at least okay its not even worth working there. The company does little to nothing to try and create a culture for the works so divide between employee groups often happen. Most people are paided very differently in the same position. There is also little room to grow in the company. The hours fluctuate greatly, ex. I went from 40 hours one week to 8 hours the next in the same month.

Pros

Employee discount

Cons

Drama, under payed, and scheduling problems

Fun environment

The atmosphere was super chill and everyone who worked there was like a family. Managers were very caring. There were a few people that would cause drama but overall a very chill place to work

Fun but little pay with little hours

If you need something fun to do on the side, this might be for you. Dont go in expecting to get a ton of hours and pay though. They pay bare minimum and you will be averaging 20 to 25 hrs a week unless you are management

Short staffed and busy

A typical day at work is like any retail job. You try to get the number of online orders down to a reasonable amount while helping customers find items, cutting fabric, and putting things back on the shelf. There's almost never enough staff to comfortably cover breaks. Expect to have to wait to take your break until someone gets off theirs. The management could be better, the communication isn't great and most managers don't like helping out with customers. The customers themselves are good. There are almost never any Karens and if there are they're pretty easy to deal with. The best part of the job is how flexible your schedule can be. You get to set your days and times. The managers are pretty desperate for workers so you'll most likely never be fired and you'll almost always be guaranteed to get your requested days off.

Pros

Fun coworkers, minimal Karens, and flexible work scheudle

Cons

Short staffed, low pay, and below average management

Worked at the Cutting Counter

I love to sew, so I got a summer job at JoAnn working at the cutting counter. There never seem to be enough people working at the cutting counter (especially during big sales & busy times), and there are always long lines of people waiting to have fabric cut. I found it to be very stressful!

Pros

Crafty Environment

Cons

Short-Staffed

Bad management

While coworkers are typically nice, management is really terrible and the pay is way too low. It’s a pretty boring environment and the AC doesn’t work.

Poorly managed

Employee discount is pretty much the only perk. The store is poorly managed and it is felt by employees and customers alike. It’s not great to be underpaid for the work either.

Not a bad place to work if you’re looking for pocket money or something to do after retirement.

What is the best part of working at the company?Manager is good. Tries to be accommodating to your schedule. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The hours are reduced a lot when the sales go down and in the summer time because it’s less busy . Expect that if your store isn’t popular. There aren’t enough employees because of the hours situation and it can be a common complaint by the customers. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? It’s fine if you have a good manger. What is a typical day like for you at the company?Cashiering, cutting fabric for customers, putting way bolts of fabric, fixing up the shelves. Some stocking occasionally.
