Counselor & tech in Sioux Falls, SD
on June 30, 2022
I worked as a counselor at Keystone for over a year (I was also a technician), and I quit within the last year. First, this is the lowest paying job in the field that I have ever had. The pay just is not worth the stress and work load. I also strongly disliked the culture. Working here felt like I was in a cult, with praying during every staff meeting. This is a for-profit organization, so I felt like a lot was focused on gaining profit and not always on the clients need. Helping the clients succeed in their recovery is a rewarding feeling, so that is a plus with working here, and precisely why I stayed for over a year despite the stress, lousy pay, and disliking management. If you’re looking for a low-paying, high stressed job, this may be the perfect fit for you.

I love what I do and how I am able to make a difference in people's lives. I have made lasting relationships with great coworkers. Current changes have me hopeful for improvement in moral.

Alot of change at Keystone. Although many staff care deeply about doing their job and care about each other. There is a lack of support and understanding from upper management. More about making money than providing quality care.

Keystone has a passion for the patient's who come through the doors. To see a patient come in so broken and leave with an entire different light in their eyes and knowing you as a Keystone staff member helped with that, what a reward that is. Everyone here gets along great. We pray every morning for the staff and patient's. There are always cons in every job, but in this case the pro's far outweigh the cons. If you want an environment where you watch lives change, were the staff genuinely care for one another and do not feel judged, Keystone is the place for you.
Former Intern in Canton, SD
on December 14, 2021
I wish I could say that I had a positive experience with my internship here. I took a semester to obtain my masters degree and worked in the adolescent girls' unit, and it was not a very positive experience. I attended a lot of group sessions and a few one-on-one sessions, but was told that I couldn't do any sessions myself or do any diagnostics unless I was in for another semester. I felt like I didn't have a lot of opportunities to use my skills that I learned. So, most days, to be honest, I read through some of the client files and my DSM to better understand why some individuals were diagnosed the way they were and attending groups and activities with the clients. Upon leaving Keystone, I was informed that I "lacked initiative" and "did not have a lot of motivation to move forward." I felt like I did not belong there and that I was just passing through like the wind. My supervisor was hardly there to give me tasks to complete or things to do, despite me asking. When I did ask for things to do from other coworkers, they insisted that they were able to handle everything on their own and to just keep doing what I was doing. I felt left out, like I was a stranger that clearly did not belong there. I only felt positive with one or two coworkers there. I feel like this internship was a waste of mine and their time.
