Excellent products, good training program, very good management team. Very low pay for industry, they micro manage everything. Good if your area supports a lot of sales.

Experience working in the office and in the field vastly different
Factory Sales Representative (Former Employee) –  Hickory, NCNovember 21, 2018
The company has two vastly different work environments. Working in the office they are very strict on time (When you show up, when you leave, when you take lunch), but it is an enjoyable work environment. The people that work in the office are great and most of the management is good. The outside sales team is subject to the same time management, but they also have an incredible amount of pressure on them to produce unrealistic results. Generating 6-12 new customers every month, and maintaining all current customers with the tools at your disposal is difficult. You are micromanaged and monitored at every turn, and there is no trust between the sales team and the management. There is also little to no loyalty between the company and the sales force. With many salesmen feeling like they work at a knife's edge wondering when they will be pushed out for minor infractions or "performance" issues.

All of that being said, you have every opportunity to cold call, to work with customers, to explore your territory and make calls. They are up-front that the sales positions are not a 9-5 /8 hour a day job and they expect the sales team to put work in outside of the standard work day. It is a difficult environment but a good salesman that wants to succeed can make it work, but they don't compensate these salesmen well enough to keep them.

Also the company phone they provide is only for work purposes. Do not expect to use it as a personal phone.

Finally the email system that the sales team has to use is absolutely worthless, and incredibly difficult to work with.

Big brother is watching you.
Factory Sales Representative (Current Employee) –  Hickory, NCOctober 10, 2018
As an Outside Sales Rep you are continually monitored via AVL in your company vehicle. After that they have access to email, text messages, phone calls, and that’s only the ones I am aware of but are probably more. Highly micro managed with unreal sales and new customer goals. Compensation is on the lower end of the scale and promotional spiffs are available but you can be disqualified depending on the information received weekly from your AVL tracking device.
Pros
Company car, company phone, company tablet
Cons
Micro Management, Unrealistic goals, poor training

It's not about the customer...
Factory Sales Representative (Current Employee) –  Hickory, NCAugust 28, 2018
The company focuses on policing the sales force (what time you see your first customer, what time you get home, how long your car idles and so on - even if you are the company's' SALES PERSON OF THE YEAR 2 years in a row) via an AVL tracking device on the "company car". The mindset that once a business purchases their products, they'll continue to do so regardless of in-person service. They don't seem to see a connection between representatives and a continuing and increased revenue stream - UNLESS business falls away. Then the representatives are responsible. Their modus operandi is sales professionals will work long days to see prospects and customers in person, handle "busy" work like quotes, necessary email communications, etc. in the evening or on weekends - all for a comp plan that is not close to worth it. Hence, massive turn over (twelve reps for one of my customers in 15 years at the same location). Very good products in some applications, very easy to see and identify in the yellow boxes.
Pros
great opportunity to see the inside operations of manufacturing in so many different products
Cons
micro management, generally unattainable goals, minimal sales rep support, archaic tools and mindset

Don't Do It
Outside Sales Representative (Current Employee) –  Southern CaliforniaJune 13, 2018
The outside sales position for this company has some great customers, but you will not be paid or make enough commission income to survive in most markets - especially where the cost of living indexes are from normal to above. It simply doesn't make sense.
The technological and communication infrastructure of the company is archaic. This becomes more relevant to the modern day job/career journey because you will not learn and develop with systems that benefit you, the customer, or even the company itself. You will learn mostly about what companies should NOT be doing the modern market.
The leadership of this company has its challenges too. For the most part, there is a culture of manipulation and intimidation. Having worked with leaders that develop, grow, inspire, and encourage - this company operates on the other end of the spectrum.
Pros
Some of the products are really superior in their class.
Cons
Super Low Income, Manipulative Management Style, Ineffective Tech Stack

Good Sales Job
Factory Sales Representative (Current Employee) –  Minneapolis, MN and Tampa, FLMay 16, 2018
Call on existing customers and prospect for new business. Ive learned a lot about the different industries that use abrasives.
Management could be a little more responsive to changing conditions.
There is a churn and burn culture. You get initial training and a little more advanced training after 60 days. It is learn on the fly after that though.
Hardest part of the job is understanding what product goes best with each application.
I enjoy learning about what my customers do and learn a lot from just talking to them.
Pros
Work by myself with very little interference from management on a day to day basis
Cons
Below industry average on salary.

Review from Seasoned Sales Rep in L.A. market
Factory Sales Representative (Current Employee) –  Los Angeles, CAApril 15, 2018
You will learn alot and get experience in regards to outside sales. If your $ requirements are $40,000 to $50,000 yr. You may find a home here. No cost of living adjustment in salary for region. If you live in LA, SF, you can make comparable money washing cars, waiting tables, etc. Great position to put on resume. After one year of success many will be able to get comparable outside sales position that pays much better. (+20% to +100%) Those who fail and complain here, will anywhere.
Pros
Regional Manager is very dedicated and wants to see you suceed.
Cons
Competetive market means you must often sell low limiting comission potential, not unusal to have 4 abrasive co. seeking same customer.

Upper management and pay limit long term productivity
Factory Sales Representative (Current Employee) –  Hickory, NCSeptember 12, 2017
New territory is being limited because they don't want representatives to drive more than 600 miles a week. Commissions as little as 1% for commodity products. Management tries but it is what it is.

Sales Rep
Sales Representative (Current Employee) –  FloridaAugust 7, 2017
A day Klingspor, seeing same clients on a regular basis. Products varied, cutting, sanding and shaping, as well as safety products. A full line of hand tools were sold to all customers. A relationship getting to know all of our customers was very important, many companies sold lots of our products, Takes 2 a good company and me to make a success. Every month exceeded sales goals and budgets. The more I achieved of course you make more money. Like being at the top.

lots of miles
Manufacturer's Representative (Current Employee) –  USAAugust 2, 2017
Very little training and you are left to learn it on your own on your own time. Work day is 20-30 stops per day starting at 7:30 and being out in the filed until 4:00. Then there is another 1-2 hours of computer work when you get back. No ability to provide quotes to potential customers and very limited tech.
Pros
company car, home based
Cons
long hours, lots of customer visits, many miles a week in the car

Sales Representative (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXMay 19, 2017
Not too much to say about this company. They pay very well but make sure you work for it. If you can handle responsibility and possess the ability to be a self starter then you can do great things with this company.

commissions aren't fair
Factory Sales Representative (Current Employee) –  Omaha, NEApril 6, 2017
The commission could be a lot better. I'm making somewhere in the 2-3% for a sale, just because our list prices start so high. Our product is good, but not good enough to charge 30% more than people want to pay.
