Worked Numerous Contracts
Senior Radiological Safety Technician (Former Employee) –  Niskayuna, NYFebruary 11, 2018
I worked at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory on three (3) separate contracts back to back. The first was for a short 3 month contract. The second contract was for about 9 months. The last contract was for a year. The DOE (Dept. of Energy) Representatives were not very easy to approach with concerns.
Pros
Worked for a Good Company
Cons
No Healthcare

Structural Engineer (Former Employee) –  Schenectady, NYJanuary 29, 2018
A monopoly in the nuclear industry can only be chock full of red tape. Stereotypical engineers managing stereotypical engineers = nobody cares about schedules or budgets. A lot of your tax dollars go down the drain there
Pros
Not stressful, everyone is nice, they let you take 32 consecutive days off
Cons
Very boring, no internet, no cell phone

Senior Engineer / Project Manager (Current Employee) –  Ballston Spa, NYJanuary 29, 2018
you must be able to deal with the all the regulations and rules to make it difficult to get things done. It is an old industrial site that is doing some upgrading. It does give you purpose that you are supporting the Navy.
Pros
9/8- schedule
Cons
difficult to get things done

A great place to work on very cool stuff.
Nuclear Engineering Intern (Former Employee) –  Schenectady, NYJanuary 12, 2018
The people and organization are excellent. There were always people willing to help with work problems and they were good people to talk to about anything else. The work is very challenging and very cool.
Pros
The people and the work
Cons
Can't talk about work at home

Fleet Support Design Engineer (Former Employee) –  Niskayuna, NYAugust 20, 2017
Pros:
-You are supporting the Navy's sailors
-You are contributing to the country's defense
-It is almost impossible to get fired, because of the cost AND time of processing a high level security clearance
-Upstate NY really grew on me, and I loved living there

Cons:
-Managers are largely drafted from former Navy and former Navy trainers. Don't expect much ladder-climbing advancement unless you fit into one of those two buckets. But if you do advance up the ladder, be prepared for top-down dictation.
-Free thinking is not encouraged: just follow the existing process, even if it is hopelessly flawed.
-Salary is not to market
-Upstate NY taxes are insane

D & D worker and operations department (Current Employee) –  Niskayuna, NYJuly 19, 2017
My day may include loading hazardous water tankers or D & D work.
I have learned a lot about the handling of hazardous waste. The management is easy to talk to and they encourage an open door policy.

Plant Operations Manager (Current Employee) –  West Milton, NYApril 7, 2017
KAPL is a very unique company. They are directly responsible for the design, operational support and training of nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers. The work environment is challenging because of the strict regulatory requirements and micromanagement of the Naval Reactors Program.

Great people too much bureaucracy
Technical Intern (Former Employee) –  Niskayuna, NYMarch 27, 2017
While I learned a lot during my short time at Knolls, I found it hard to get past the bureaucratic nature of the facility. Due to the secretive nature of the work, the company takes security very seriously and going to work felt as if I was going to a prison.
Pros
9/80 work schedule, do not have to take work home
Cons
strict security, slow moving nature of projects

Fun Place to work
Electrical Engineer (Former Employee) –  Niskayuna, NYJanuary 31, 2017
It is a fun place to work. Room to learn and to improve. You will find the best engineers who are willing to help. The only problem that i had was in my group, every 18 months we have a new Manager. The new one will try to settle and know people, and he will take another position within the company.
Pros
Good Place to work
Cons
Career advancement

Strong ethical enviroment with a common company goal
Instructor-Navy (Current Employee) –  West Milton, NYJanuary 2, 2017
I taught most days in lectures, seminars and labs.
The organization as a whole knows what its goal is and has a clear view of it, However it tends to elevate some positions more than others which leads to division. Also its a government contract company so there is no big rush to ever accomplish anything.

A comfortable job but nuts
Engineer of Radiological Work (Current Employee) –  Schenectady, NYJune 2, 2016
The navy has a great goal 0 accidents. If you play to those rules and try your best you'll do fine with the occasional how did this go wrong meeting.

The attitude is so pervasive and risk avoidance so high; work doesn't get done without a long, painful, expensive and frankly ridiculous process.

That being said it's a 9/80 work schedule, you won't be fired and you get tremendous personal freedom to try and get whatever you can accomplished.

9/80 work schedule

Decent Company. Good benefits. Great job security. Culture is not the best...but it is improving. It seems if you work hard it goes noticeable. At least in the department that I work in.

Great place if you can stand the weather
Engineer (Former Employee) –  Schenectady, NYMay 16, 2015
Job Work/Life Balance - You can't take your work home with you, so once you leave you're done. In the time I was there I think I came in on the weekend once or twice total.

Compensation/Benefits - Benefits are incredible compared to most jobs. There is no longer a pension, which was a big deal to a lot of new employees, but everything is so good I didn't mind at all. Compensation seems to lag behind because of recent pay freezes from the DOE.

Job Security/Advancement - Once you're in and make it past the trial period, it's really your choice on how long you work there. As long as you aren't aggressive to co-workers or don't respect the security rules, you're in for life if you want.

Management - Compared to other jobs I've had, despite some of the typical "my boss is an idiot" type conversations, they're incredible. Truly inspirational leadership that sets a great example for employees to follow; if they choose to.

Job Culture - Pretty laid back for what you're working with and who you're working for. Not uncommon to see half the building out for a lunchtime walk on the bicycle track. Most people are smart, friendly, and outgoing. This is something unusual with engineers and scientists, but really nice to be around.
Pros
Coworkers, Interesting work, Leadership
Cons
Can have suffocating rules, armed guards, no personal electronics

Systems Engineer - Electrical (Current Employee) –  Niskayuna, NYJanuary 27, 2015
Government facility with a large amount of restrictions that impede you ability to accomplish work tasks and lower than average compensation. Additionally, restrictions of no person electronic devices (i.e. cell phones, tablets, health monitor watches) limits your connectivity to the outside world and prevents the company from being current with technology. A decent place to get your career started as a graduating student and however not a place to consider long term employment. Some pros are tuition reimbursement and job security as it is very hard to be let go for poor performance.

Specialist, Team Lead (Current Employee) –  Niskayuna, NYSeptember 29, 2013
A routine day of work includes working on quarterly publishing releases, which may come to a screaming halt if a boat is in need. Then, all stakeholders stop what they are doing to solve whatever technical or safety issue is at hand. Teammates collaborate to get the job done.
