Great place if you can stand the weather
Engineer (Former Employee) – Schenectady, NY – May 16, 2015
Job Work/Life Balance - You can't take your work home with you, so once you leave you're done. In the time I was there I think I came in on the weekend once or twice total.
Compensation/Benefits - Benefits are incredible compared to most jobs. There is no longer a pension, which was a big deal to a lot of new employees, but everything is so good I didn't mind at all. Compensation seems to lag behind because of recent pay freezes from the DOE.
Job Security/Advancement - Once you're in and make it past the trial period, it's really your choice on how long you work there. As long as you aren't aggressive to co-workers or don't respect the security rules, you're in for life if you want.
Management - Compared to other jobs I've had, despite some of the typical "my boss is an idiot" type conversations, they're incredible. Truly inspirational leadership that sets a great example for employees to follow; if they choose to.
Job Culture - Pretty laid back for what you're working with and who you're working for. Not uncommon to see half the building out for a lunchtime walk on the bicycle track. Most people are smart, friendly, and outgoing. This is something unusual with engineers and scientists, but really nice to be around.
