Good for the Short Term, But Stay Close With Your Original Goals
Substitute Teacher (Former Employee) - San Antonio - November 6, 2023
The most enjoyable part of the job was probably when I first started working there meeting various people. Over time, there is little support from the supervisors if you are working an extra job or if you are a caregiver for a parent. The staff is not supportive if you become ill or you simply cannot make it on time while attending school or simply taking care of your family. The staff is not supportive if you have rude customer. In the fact the management becomes dismissive if you have rude or recalicitrant students. This job is mostly ideal for high school students and college students. Yet, if you are working another job or taking care of your family. My advice, try to find a substitute job at a public school. Your health will thank you.
Pros
A variety of IDEA schools to work at, can be somewhat flexible in scheduling
Cons
Inconsistent Work, Schools Are Not Always Close By, Staff is not always Supportive and Undersanding If You Become Ill or Have Transportation Issues

Great company
Guest Teacher (Current Employee) - New York, NY - October 18, 2023
I consider myself an independent contractor, Kokua considers you an employee and enforces work days per week rule… other than that it’s a pretty cool company to work for…

Supportive Company
Guest Teacher (Current Employee) - New York, NY - October 18, 2023
The hardest part of the job is going into new spaces every day and not knowing what to expect. This is of course typical of every substitute or guest teacher, but it worth noting. That being said, Kokua is extremely supportive and offers help and guidance when needed. Just yesterday, I was put in a classroom where I felt unsafe and unsupported, and Kokua allowed me to leave to prioritize my health and safety. This has never been an issue before, and I doubt it will again, but it goes to show that Kokua is supportive of their staff.
Pros
Flexibility
Cons
Healthcare, Benefits

Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) - McAllen, TX - October 16, 2023
its a really good company the people who take care of you in the process is amazing. i havent had any difficulty with kokua workers. on the other hand ive had a lot of challenges with administrators/teachers who are rude. I strongly believe that they should have a guideline on how to treat a substitutes teacher because we are there to help them and help the students. but overall Im super happy with my position and would recommend everybody whos working in getting into the field of Education.
Pros
Amazing support system with kokua, having fun with the Students, Learning new things everyday.
Cons
admin/teachers who give difficult time

Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) - San Antonio, TX - October 16, 2023
Getting to the different schools , learning different lil ones and how they learn to adapt in coming to school to learn and make friends . I’ve learned to also manage my time and every scenario in front of me, the best way I can. The workplaces I’ve been to have been great only maybe two experiences I felt sad when I left from, but don’t want to disclose here. The hardest part is sad mad little people in my class , I try to find parking to make it easier on me when I get out of work and never seem to get out easily from schools . The most enjoyable part is everything else aside of parking and I believe subs and teachers in general should get paid more.

Flexible & Reliable!
Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) - Philadelphia, PA - October 13, 2023
Love working for Kokua! It’s so flexible, there are always assignments available and the pay is the best that I’ve seen compared to other companies! The school sometimes can be a little unorganized as far as assignments but there’s always somewhere to be placed.
Pros
Pay, balance

A Good Learning Opportunity
Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) - New York, NY - October 13, 2023
I enjoy being able to visit different schools in vastly different areas and offer assistance for students and students alike. Most of the time, the schools are quite far from where I am but traveling there is definitely a labor of love. Many of my days are spent just mediating conflict between students and redirecting students to the day’s activities which can become laborious at times. Either way, there has a handful of time where students have shown me great appreciation for my presence in their class for the day which is the most enjoyable part for me.
Pros
Weekly Pay, Flexible Schedule
Cons
Long Travel Times, Minimal/No Substitute Lesson Plans

Best Substitute Teacher Job Ever
Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) - Philadelphia, PA - October 12, 2023
When picking up a shift most permanent teachers provide you a packet with the curriculum to ensure you’re continuing the learning process that the kids are on. The best part of it all you get to give back to the community and be present in the kid’s lives daily to help shape a better tomorrow for them because they are our future leaders of tomorrow.

Flexibility and job security
Long Term Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) - Austin, TX - October 10, 2023
This job gives you flexibility and allow you to do it part time. I personally do it full time and have even got offered to stay for 4 months while I was just hired for a week assignment. I received an offer to be a lead teacher but couldn’t accept it for personal reasons. So it can be easy and quick to get hired within the Idea Public School System. Moreover, the salary for long term assignment as a substitute is close to the salary of a teacher.
Pros
Good salary, free lunch if on lunch duty, flexibility
Cons
Most of the substitute positions are for lower classes like kindergarten, but I guess it depends on the need of the school not on Kokua Education.

Guest teacher
Guest Teacher (Current Employee) - McAllen, TX - October 9, 2023
- A typical day is long and stressful - Management is quick to reach out to you to call you out on things, but takes a while at time to answer back to our questions -The hardest part is the students behavior and some of admin at different schools and no benefits on behalf of the company especially for long term substitutes that are the literal teacher and conduct full on lessons -Most enjoyable part of the job is weekly pay
Pros
Weekly pay
Cons
No benefits at all

It’s a substitute job
Substute Teacher (Current Employee) - San Antonio, TX - October 9, 2023
It’s a company for substitutes, their requirements for the job are fair when compared to the pay…. They have no control over the actual school we go to so reviewing them under the “little pay, a lot of work” doesn’t really make sense. Communicating and leaving the school reviews after every assignment is what helps with the “hard” workload. I honestly think it’s a good job- we get weekends off- you get payed for what you work for- you can work as much or as little (within 5 day a month limit) as you want. It’s a good change of space if you want something different from service jobs.
Pros
Schedule flexibility and good pay
Cons
No benefits/no pay when there no school

The rate of pay is good
Guest Teacher (Current Employee) - Tarrant County, TX - October 9, 2023
No different than any other contractors. The pay is higher. Subbing is a difficult task, that requires discipline. The Campuses all have reliable Leadership Teams. I never have face to face interaction with Kokua Consultants.
Pros
Flexibility to choose.
Cons
Some schools are very low in pay..
