Only working for this company for about four months so far
Consulting Utility Forester (Current Employee) –  Long Island, NYOctober 13, 2018
I have only worked for this company for about four months. So far it seems better than the last company I worked for. The health insurance is better and there are more paid holidays.
Pros
They provide employees with work boots and clothing
Cons
At the mercy of the utility client

Trap for Recent College Graduates
Work Planner (Former Employee) –  Detroit, MIJuly 11, 2017
I worked for ECI for over a year and while the culture eventually got better, the work load compared to the compensation was extremely one sided. They expected professional products without compensating at a professional level. The work load is vast, often with little over site. This lead to many projects having to be reworked on the company's expense. There was an extremely high turn over rate. Of the ~50 employees of equal position there when I started a meager handful remained a little after a year. The culture got better over time after the entire top management team left, but the work load remained the same with constant revisions to work practices and policies, leading to a complete failure of communication, leaving workers to do whatever they felt was the correct practice at the time.

If you want to work here, it better be temporary because it will not lead to a career for you
Pros
Work Truck, Large degrees of autonomy
Cons
everything else

Decent place to stop by on your career journey, not a place to stay long term.
Team Lead - Jan. 2017 (Current Employee) –  Pontiac, MIMarch 17, 2017
Work life balance is great. You spend the majority of your time outdoors working in all weather conditions. Management has come a long way since I have started the current team is really nice to work for. The downside is that you most likely will not be able to cover all life's expenses while working here, which makes it a good place for recent graduates looking to get a job that they don't really intend staying in long term. Everyone is friendly and pleasant to work with. Hardest part of the job is working in the cold or rain and dealing with the constant changes (it's still relatively a new contract so hopefully it will stabilize relatively soon). The most enjoyable part is working outside and while most of the time you are alone when you do run into the office the people there are genuinely good people who are good listeners and receptive to feedback from the field.
Pros
Low Stress, outdoors
Cons
Pay, unstable overtime availability. Little PTO

Great company to start out your career
Utility Arborist (Current Employee) –  MichiganJanuary 20, 2017
The company has gone through a recent management change and the results are very positive. The president and those he has around him are incredibly smart and have positioned the company to excel. Management genuinely cares about where the company is headed and how they will get there. There have been many positive changes in how the company operates. One of the most prominent is the push into better technology (for example, new iphones, cloud based software, etc..)

ECI employs forestry professionals in many different areas of the country. There are many projects with staff ranging from 1 to 50 at each location. There is a great company culture but it will vary slightly depending on what project/area you are working in. Upper level management does a good job policing the company culture at different projects and will step in to make changes if needed.

There are many opportunities for advancement, even for those with limited experience. One of the best things about this company is that they do not promote on "years of service". If you have a good attitude, are a quick learner and a go-getter, hang on tight because you will likely work your way up the ladder quickly.

Benefits and compensation could be better, but it isn't all that bad. I would say paid time off is below average but the health insurance is above average.

You will learn a lot in the beginning from your on the job training and daily work. However after that there are limited opportunities for professional development unless you get a promotion.
Pros
Working outdoors
Cons
Below average paid time off

Great staff to work with but benefits are on the lacking side. The higher management can be testing some times and very slow with responses and promises. But they do provide good equipment to work with and good hour.

Only if you have to...
Work Planner (Former Employee) –  Keego Harbor, MIMay 7, 2016
Lakeside Environmental Consultants, Inc is working as subcontractor for DTE Energy. Basically, this company is milking the cash cow for as long as possible. The end result of the work they provide is a work plan for 3rd party union contractors. ECI plans the work of union tree workers. Do you see anything wrong with this set up? It leads to constant finger pointing by all parties.

First, ECI doesn't have enough work planned for the tree crews. The next week the quality of the work plan is basically useless. The tree contactors still have to provide an employee of their own to figure out the work of ECI Planners.

The management of ECI is extremely incompetent. They recently promoted several planners of which all 3 immediately resigned. ECI claims to be a vegetation management company who specialize in tree management. However, less than 2 percent of the employees are certified as arborists. These employees are expected to make sound judgments about peoples trees. Most employees can't identify tree species. The company has been through 4 project managers within one year. Management is extremely stressed out and frequently make delusional statements about being recorded. They will spy on you waiting for you to forget something.

Furthermore, ECI will send you out by yourself in the neighborhoods of Detroit. Much of the work is located in alleys of residential neighborhoods of Detroit. If your a woman they may pair you up with a security guard. Have you seen some of the pit bulls in Detroit? You will if you decide to take a job with ECI.

The benefits
more... are very lackluster. Six paid holidays. You are working on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve (unless they lay you off). You have to accumulate vacation time at a rate of 1 hour per week to a maximum of 40 hours vacation per year for the first 3 years of employment. Be prepared to sell your soul to ECI if you decide to fall for their illusion of a career. Chances are you will fall into a the constant cycle of turnover and hiring.

The most enjoyable part of the job is watching management trying to manage their way out of a paper bag with a box cutter. It's a tall order for these clowns.

Work Planner (Current Employee) –  Detroit, MINovember 30, 2015
If you like working outdoors then this job is for you because you're expected to work outside for 90% of the work day. The upper management is forced to push you to work long hours due to requirements that they have to uphold.
Pros
company truck, good benefits
Cons
long hours, working outside in all weather

Herbicide Application Auditor (Former Employee) –  Lewisburg, WVJuly 26, 2015
Worked solo out in the field. Made and completed own work schedule on time and to the greatest of my abilities. Dealt with fairly rough, steep, and thick terrain in some locations. Enjoyed working outdoors everyday, but job did involve office time and work.

Totalitarian Managment/Employees are treated like Chattel
Utility Arborist/Planner (Former Employee) –  Kansas CityJuly 16, 2015
A cautionary tale
Contrary to what they market towards employees.
You will work alone, sometimes in dangerous situations.
You have no voice, you are number.
Orwellian in their management style, their is no independence.
A Predatory Company especially of college graduates.
Wages are low and upward mobility is limited
You will start at around 14$ and top out at 16$.
A revolving door with especially high employee turnover.
A metrics driven organisation, expect a lot of pressure to meet the numeric expectation in a short period of time without using contemporary technology. (Highlighters and paper)
They have created a convoluted methodology unique to their organisation.
The company is several decades behind on integrating technology.
Skills you may learn in this company do not translate into the market place.
You may collect data with a Trimble, but don't expect access to GIS to interpret your data.
You will likely be obligated to a company truck with a GPS tracker,
they will track you 24 hours a day, and put a Geo fence around your residence.
Steer clear and look to their competitors ACRT for a better opportunity to learn relevant professional skills.
In closing, If you like late 1980s technology and Orwellian management, then this company is for you.

None at all

Little faith from management and public
CUF (Former Employee) –  Santa Clara CoOctober 20, 2013
Frustrating work environment due to poor treatment from all sides. You get to work on your own but some management paranoid about production. Tracking devices and time stamps. General public very wary about annual visits and PG&E. You will get yelled at frequently at this job. Avoid, if at all possible.
Pros
Steady paycheck, exercise, benifits, company vehicle
Cons
Poor treatment from management and public, poor compensation, meager raises

I was well compensated and was treated with respect by co-workers and supervisors. I liked being able to utilize knowledge and skills from both academia and work experience. Travel became quite daunting trying to follow where the contracts are for job security.
Pros

Cons
