Simple and peaceful place to work.
Seasonal Security Officer (Former Employee) –  Kennett Square, PAMarch 30, 2017
A typical work day depends on the position and season. On non-holiday days expect to be standing/patrolling/cycling/driving for a 9 to 14 hour shift. On holidays expect either constant action, strange lulls of peacefulness amongst thousands of people, or some interesting time in the lots.
The management is enjoyable and well established. You really get to know your bosses and vice versa.
It is a very laid back work environment, the most difficult thing to deal with is the very nature of the job. Sometimes you have good days where nothing happens at all. And sometimes you have bad days where there are incidents upon incidents to respond to.
However, the laid back atmosphere, great looking environment, and enjoyable company more than make up for any difficulties.
Pros
Enjoyable work. Great work enviroment. Friendly employees and visitors.
Cons
Work in all weather. Long shifts or oddly timed shifts are the norm.

Carpenter (Former Employee) –  Kennett Square, PADecember 28, 2016
I worked in the carpentry division of the maintenance department. I did a large variety of tasks there. We often worked with different departments as well. My co-workers were great to work with.

Longwood has gone down hill
Seasonal Employee (Former Employee) –  Kennett Square, PADecember 23, 2016
Used to be a nice place to work until the organization got sticks up their butts. Fun group of people to work with though, but very low paying organization. Also a very drama filled place moving towards upper management. Also, unfortunately at Christmas time, those lovely Christmas lights come at the cost of the lives of many squirrels who are killed to prevent chewing through light wiring. Like most things DuPont, don't trust them. But like I said, the low-wage workers are great to work with if you can afford the job.
Pros
Co-workers. 7-3:30 work hours. Access to gardens.
Cons
Low pay. Harm wildlife.

Fun job, great co-workers, but....
Guest Services Attendant (Former Employee) –  Kennett Square, PAOctober 13, 2015
middle management left a lot to be desired; blatent favoritism and unrealistic expectations of one of the lowest paying jobs at the garden. Lots of time standing and even when you had the opportunity to sit, it was not allowed.

On the upside, it was a fun, fast-paced, customer service job where I met a lot of wonderful people and learned a lot about customer service.
Pros
Membership, Gift Shop and Restaurant Discounts
Cons
Open 7 days a weekend including holidays, a lot of standing

Educational and a great place to work.
Customer Service Representative (Current Employee) –  Kennett Square, PAOctober 6, 2014
For Longwood Gardens a typical day at work includes a wide range of responsibilities from selling General Admission tickets to selling memberships, to answering a wide range of customer questions. If you are interested in beginning a career in the non-profit/museum field, then Longwood Gardens would be a great place to begin!

a beautiful, busy, and fun place to work
Custodian/Janitor (Former Employee) –  Kennett Square, PAApril 3, 2014
A wide variety of tasks and responsibilities made for a busy day, but working with some great people in this beautiful place made every day pass quickly.

My particular position required constant maintenance of the perimeter of the property as well as the interior grounds in all weather conditions. This included cleaning and sanitizing the outlying restrooms, collecting trash and recycling from the workshops and offices inside the Gardens, and periodic stripping and re-waxing floors in specific areas. Preparation for special events was also part of the job, and included setting up for concerts, holiday displays, and seasonal events such as fireworks shows and the month-long Christmas display.

The Longwood Gardens management is very proactive and receptive of input from the staff. Meetings were scheduled and announced well in advance to the specified date, which made it easier to complete my tasks during the time around the event.

My co-workers are all team oriented, and while each one has specific responsibilities, everyone is willing to help one another complete the more demanding requirements.

The hardest part was usually the extended working hours for the events mentioned above. The typical workday is ten hours, but it was sometimes necessary to stay much later. The counter-balance to that was the caliber and quality of all other other employees in each of the other departments. Everyone was exceedingly knowledgeable in their specialty fields and happy with their lives and their work. That made for a very positive and energized environment.
Pros
regular three-day weekends, a beautiful workplace
Cons
I can recall no "cons" worth mentioning.

a very pleasant atmosphere
custodian (Former Employee) –  Kennett Square, PAJanuary 22, 2013
* beginning at 6:30 am, check all outdoor areas for litter, spills and broken, damaged, or malfunctioning features. Empty and clean all outdoor trash cans, open and clean all outlying rest areas. Collect and process recycling and trash from various locations, execute work orders, unload delivery trucks and complete receiving documents.
* working together toward a common goal is the most effective way to create the desired environment.
* management displayed capability and competence
* coworkers were very up-beat, a pleasure to work with.
* the most trying times were the special events and seasonal displays, which often contributed to frequent scheduling changes.
* working in this beautiful, marvelous place was a reward unto itself.
Pros
four 10-hour work-days, three-day weekends, health insurance benefits
Cons
during the slower times of the year the days seemed only to get longer!
