Management is running the place down to the ground
GFT Operator (Current Employee) –  Greenwood, SCFebruary 11, 2019
Over the years that I had been at Capsugel, which is now Lonza, the management has been terrible. They trying to cut people to save money and run the people that work there to the bare minimum of people to work.

Horrible work environment that one cannot imagine
Bioscience Lead (Current Employee) –  Walkersville, MDFebruary 3, 2019
I joined this company in hopes to improve one of their sites that had struggled through regulatory inspections. The site management and above-site management are not sincere in their stated intent to correct the deficiencies at the site. There is not a day that I go to work without being asked to compromise my integrity. Site leadership is technically deficient and accepting a role with this company has been the biggest mistake of my career. Steer clear of this company.

Everyone is not treated the same . Poorly staffed . Stress from the supervisors fall back on other employees. Technicians become mini supervisors and dictators.

Everything about Lonza was wonderful. All employees, including management were positive and upbeat. The company has vision and direction with much potential. Work life balance is also very favorable.

Administrative Support (Former Employee) –  Atlanta, GAJanuary 3, 2019
I worked for Lonza for two years after my previous employer was bought out. The transition wasn't too pleasant with so many at my location being laid off. Lonza tried to keep things positive but not sure it worked. Right after I left, location moved from Sandy Springs to Alpharetta. That definitely hurt many people. New owners weren't as invested and the exec staff not at our location so morale definitely dropped.

Good pay

Poor morale

Company was in array. No consistency, no one particular person in charge to speak with. Very unorganized company. No direction from anyone. This was my experience.

Excellent Company, but they will burn you out
QA Specialist (Current Employee) –  Portsmouth, NHDecember 13, 2018
The better you do, the more work you get. You're expected to work late, from home, whatever it takes. When the best burn out, you know something is wrong.

Otherwise, you learn a lot everyday and the pay and benefits are great, if you can keep up!

Quality Control Debacle and just another Vapid Corporate Rebranding
Quality Control Analyst II (Former Employee) –  Portsmouth, NHDecember 12, 2018
IMPORTANT: QC Analyst is NOT a science position. Yes, it requires minimal laboratory exposure, but this is NOT a science position. In QC, you are an "analyst" that does NOT analyze anything. Zero critical thinking required. Anyone can be trained to do this. You will only regurgitate outdated protocols with a wildly substandard and cumbersome mix of three separate documentation programs. It is both comically and infuriatingly inefficient.

The culture is toxic and it is palpable from the moment you walk into the "bullpen." I was in search of and subsequently promised by multiple supervisors in the interview process that I would be a part of a fun, dynamic, and cooperative team. Nope. Very petty and unnecessarily combative work environment. Many of my coworkers were wonderful in many regards but most lacked any measure of ambition nor the will to improve their condition because of years of ineffective and/or incompetent management. Oh, the stories I heard...and be prepared to hear a lot of "you can try, but nothing will change." It is literally only a job to EVERYONE there and was far-and-away the most depressing place I have ever worked.

The corporate rebranding is a cute attempt to manufacture a viable culture, but Lonza is a CMO and absolutely treat their people as vehicles to a bottom line. You will constantly hear about how much money every mistake will cost the company or how quickly some people have been fired. Plus, once you've seen the self-sensationalizing "look at how important we are to our patients" corporate makeover routine a few times over; it loses
more... its credibility. Sure, you can make a bathroom clean enough to eat off of but if you never flush the toilets, the smell never goes away.

I cannot speak to other Lonza sites or even other departments in Portsmouth, but unless you are a recent grad looking for entry-level experience or someone that does not mind stressful, thankless production environments...Quality Control is a waste of your professional time.

Lonza failing
Instrumentation and Electrical Technician (Current Employee) –  Rochester, NY 14611December 4, 2018
Bad decisions, lack of foresight, poor hiring practices. Used to be a great place to work but not anymore. Maintenance department is grossly understaffed and leadership is non-existent. Culture is failing and morale is depressing. Anyone that has been in the facility longer than 10 - 15 years is just waiting to retire.
The hours are long with poor working conditions - you work inside and outside. The good news is that when you get up a couple of levels in pay the money is great and you can work all of the overtime you can handle.

Great pay

You have no family

Customer Service Specialist (Current Employee) –  Cleveland, TNDecember 3, 2018
Because of my immediate supervisor, this is the best place I have ever worked. The company at large is almost irrelevant when it comes to the culture of one's office, so, consider that when interviewing for your next job.
Pros
Great Human to Human contact.
Cons
Seasonal hours, but, worth that though.

Mapleton site had around 75 employees that each cared for each other and the company. Employees were given lots of responsibility as the facility runs lean.

North America Head, Regulatory Affairs (Former Employee) –  Portsmouth, NHOctober 25, 2018
The company is driven by bottom line, when they acquire a company, they make sure they get their money back first and then some and never invest in the new company, or the employees.

Chemical Operator (Former Employee) –  Rochester, NYOctober 17, 2018
The Rochester location has to be the worst of them all, management is definitely the worst. They have safety employees, yet there is always an injury, 1-3 times per week. They do not fix things unless an audit is taking place. If you value your health and sanity, I wouldn't work at this particular location. They want you to do double the work in 12hrs, but do not want to pay you more. When you ask about advancing(which is part of the job) they give certain people multiple excuses as to why they can't, but none of them make sense. Minorities and some women are treated completely different, they are usually "stuck." If you get hurt, expect the worst from them. They are very nice your first few weeks, but they will show their true colors soon enough. Some people that actually supported the operation employees on the floor, mysteriously departed from the company without a single word. (FIRED) DON'T BE FOOLED BY WHAT THEY OFFER, BECAUSE A LOT OF IT IS BS!!! If you do take a position, pray that your area has a control room, if not be prepared to burn up in the summer and freeze in the winter. Also, don't be a female and report harrassment, because no matter what you say in confidence, everyone already knows, and management will try to find a way to say you misconstrued something, or possibly not even respond to your complaint at all.

QA Supervisor (Current Employee) –  Pearland, TXOctober 12, 2018
I am unimpressed by the management and the computer systems are less than adequate for a global Pharma corporation such as lonza. The culture here is "hurry up and wait", not so efficient and at times can be very stressful. Small group, lots of butting heads. Not receptive to new ideas just want worker bees.

New ownership. Much uncertainty.
Production Technician (Current Employee) –  Quakertown, PASeptember 15, 2018
Since new ownership in 2017, limited opportunity for overtime and bonus due to business delays and downturn. No apparent direction from new ownership regarding future plans. Downgrade in medical benefits costing over $2000 in additional out of pocket expenses over 2017. Was a great place to work previously.
