The one year I spent in the LAUSD wacky and abusive.
Teacher, Theatre Arts (Former Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - May 13, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? I don't care about anonymity. I taught one year and I felt like a veteran of the French Revolution under the Directorate. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? There are way too many miseducated, or undereducated young teachers and administrators coming into the system. An unacceptably high percentage of them these people are incurious when it comes to creating their own structures. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Dreadful. Cult-like. Depressing. My principal was like a mean, dangerous, and headless chicken. There was also an awful feeling of passive ageism. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Tense. Needy students off the hook and unaccountable.

Good benefits.
special ed trainee (Former Employee) - Cudahy, CA - May 9, 2023
good benefits, hours are good. Good work-life balance, holidays off. You get to help children grow and learn. The hardest part is saying goodbye to students.

Great teachers, lousy management
Elementary Classroom Teacher (Former Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - May 9, 2023
Management states they want to help, but every time I asked for assistance they refused. They also were constantly asking for more and more. I was the last to leave most evenings and would lesson plan half the weekend, but it was never enough for them. Also, if you had any students with a history of discipline problems and they acted up in class, management would do nothing to help you. You could never send the student to the office. It was always the teacher’s responsibility to fix it. So, all the other students were often left to work independently while you handle the offending student. Another problem with LAUSD was as soon as you collected materials and experience with a reading or math or science program they would switch to something else. Also, the photocopy machines were constantly broken or not working very well at all. Without those it is very difficult to do your job. Different to communicate with parents unless you spoke and wrote in Spanish.

Great Teachers, poor administration.
Special Education Assistant (Former Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - May 4, 2023
Working with the teachers and paraprofessionals are great! The administration showed no appreciation or valued the hard work of paraprofessionals. We were treated like second class citizens. Principal barely knew who I was after working there for about 5 years. Didn’t seem to care for the special education classes, to him they were just numbers. Cared more about appearances than trying to help fix the issues that were going on.
Pros
Summers and holidays off. Great benefits
Cons
Not enough hours, and you don’t get paid during summer

Baby sitter for $180/day 7hrs
Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - May 1, 2023
Very exhausting job. You are a baby sitter for $180/day 7hrs, paid for 6hrs, with the 30 day emergency sub credential after taxes and union dues. It can be rewarding if you look at it positively although that is hard 9 out of 10 days. You get benefits after working 100 days in a school year, which I never did. Your job is to take role, tell them to do the assignment but not enforce it as many schools have rough kids from the inner city.(as they can become aggressive) You can only do 1. Elementary OR 2. Middle School and High School they don’t allow you to be called for both. The sub system for picking up jobs is one of the oldest in the country, automated robo call. California is 48 out of 50 in school funding so that will tell you something. Bring a coat most classrooms are pretty cold. You don’t have a boss which is great and an incentive for many like me. Still can’t decide if waiting tables is more exhausting or not.

Experience Varies on Assignment
Special Education Paraprofessional (Former Employee) - San Fernando, CA - April 14, 2023
Sped Assistants could be assigned to any sped classroom. There is a wide variety of classrooms. From PALS (inclusive pre-k) to ED (Emotional Disturbance). It’s a rewarding job but very exhausting if you do not have a good classroom team to support you.

LAUSD is soul-killing to the teachers and other support staff
High School Math Teacher (Former Employee) - Los Angeles High Scho - April 9, 2023
The on-site administrators and all the way up seemed to hate teachers; they undercut our success in the classroom, chiseled us on pay and benefits, and demonized our profession publicly when convenient. And almost all other staff were treated worse, though they give so much than their their job descriptions. Working for LAUSD made me hate a job that I loved very much, and the atmosphere they brew undercuts the success of LAUSD’s many under-served students.
Pros
Long vacations and retirement plan
Cons
Terrible support from administration, to the point of hostility
