Great company to start my career in!

Featured review

Lumen selected this as a representative review
I was absolutely thrilled to start my professional career at Lumen. Pay is great for my qualifications. Benefits are very nice. Practically an unlimited PTO policy. I personally can't find any reason to use up all my PTO. Management is very kind, straight-forward and wants to see you succeed. And with the hybrid schedule the work day goes by effortlessly. I would highly advise getting a job with Lumen. The job culture is also great, although that will depend on the location.

Pros

Work-life balance, Occassional overtime oppourtunities, Plenty of breaks, Long Lunch, Great Benefits, Practically Unlimited PTO

Cons

Mundane Job Duties

Great place if you don't want to advance

All managers I had were great, issue is director level and above. The cultue of the departments I worked in they were incredibly over worked and under appreciated. They do not belive in raises, they always tell you there isn't money for everyone so no one will get a rise and then send out emails about how much money we saved and how we passed our goals each quarter. They waste money on programs that help no one except make the CEO feel good about herslef. I have witnessed directors retaliate against managers and employess and even with proof provided to HR they will protect the director and fire employees that had submitted the concerns. They parise lazy employess and don't acknowledge hard workers.

Pros

Pto

Cons

everything top to bottom

Nice place to intern

The management is really kind, the peers are great, the full time offer salary is a little low imo. But other than that, everything is quite pleasant enough

Circling the Drain

This company is so buried in debt that they have no choice but to take it out on employees. There is no way to escape the debt, and Lumen can never even support the interest payments.

Group of very intelligent people.

Job security is not good. The company wants dedicated people, but the turn around rate is very high. You learn different types of network communications.

Pros

Good healthcare and good balance of life.

Cons

Pay increases are non existing unless you get a Job Promotion or transfer to a different department.

Decent company for first 10 years then something changed

Too many mergers turned what was a great place to work into a mess. Maybe Brightspeed deal will make things better. Management is compent, and peers are great, but the systems need updating.

Pros

Great individuals

Work-Life Balance But...

Great work life balance but depending what space you're in you could end up severely micromanaged. Some of the sales orgs are the typical calls being recorded, smile and dial environment. Ask about if you are going to be given freedom to prospect in whatever way works best for you. Some orgs are just dial dial dial. Some good folks but not a great company outlook right now. Check out the stock price. Layoffs are likely around the corner...

Pros

work life balance, learning about technology, culture depending what org you are in

Cons

micro managers in certain orgs, recorded calls in sales, no freedom on how to prospect in certain orgs

Eh

It’s remote, they talk a lot about employee uplifting and mental health and all these meetings, but I don’t think they really care.More than 75% of the company is H1Bs or they hire overseas so they don’t have to pay US salaries.Plus the stock is cratering, check $LUMNPlus when I was signing the internship offer they told me it was almost guaranteed I would get a full time offer after completing internship, but I didn’t get nothing even though I had glowing reviews from my managers…. I wouldn’t work at this company again

By far the worst, most unorganized and ungrateful company I've worked for

All the systems are broken and for years there's been talk of bettering the systems and software, but they really just break it more it seems like. Then they add a new bit of software that they created themselves and it usually doesn't work, then they fix it a couple times and eventually abandon it but still require you to use it.Management, other teams and departments will throw you under the bus in a second after pretending to be your supporter. Leadership has found ways to sneak past the system and tell you one thing in an email, something completely different in person, and then reticule you for doing what they said in person because they have what they said in an email as a "paper trail". They literally plot your disadvantage. Metrics are extraordinarily unfair and directly impact your bonus, even if you have a valid reason to have had less than desirable metrics. Raises are RARE. Actual rewards are RARE. Even pizza isn't that common here. Appreciation from management in recognition is beyond fake. You can see through it that you're being buttered up so they can make themselves appear as a manager that cares and recognizes. You will likely be working OT because you HAVE to in order to meet the metrics, but then be lectured in a condescending way about OT. HR as a resource to handle the sad "leadership" is a joke, too. They just engage the person(s) with you and then leave you and the person who has that rule over you to handle the situation, ultimately leaving you right back at square 1, except now you're a target for silent retaliation that they'll make sure you can't -

Pros

You get a paycheck.

Cons

Literally everything other than receiving a paycheck. Bad expensive insurance, poor leadership, faking like you can grow within the company, impossible to meet all the metrics, etc etc.

14 years in various roles

i spent 14 years there so it can't be all bad right? The pay wasn't very good as soon as they went to the high deductible healthcare plans, the benefits were not good. But i was allowed to work from home for 90+ percent of my time there which was very convenient. I honestly should have left sooner due to low pay. But, live and learn.

Pros

working remotely

Cons

low pay, poor benefits

Horrible managers

I am currently unable to say anything negative about the company, due to legal conditions. The company is good. Some of the managers are not qualified to lead.

Pros

none

Cons

many

High Expectations

As a new CS there are high expectations on meeting metrics, but lack of training. Too many processes and not a lot of written procedure. Working long hours and still very behind on work and catching up. So many seem too busy to help or push it off it’s not their department to help.

Horrible Place to Work

I would never suggest someone take a job with this company. They are a pay for performance company which means they NEVER have to give you a raise, or your bonus for that matter. Their management is very biased and if they don't like you, watch out as you will be headed for "reduction in force". This is something they do so often, they actually have a policy for it! Plus, read your stock reports as they are being positioned to sell... reduce costs, sell off everything they can, reduce force to bare minimum (meaning more work for those left) and sell the company so they board can make more money. Take my advice and get a job elsewhere!

Pros

Benefits were ok

Cons

Managment, MIsleading employment terms, bad work life balance

Local managers don’t care about employees upper leadership puts policies in place and local management will try to not use them.

Lumen didn’t care how many years of service or where they moved people to continue their careers. Lateral movement within the company didn’t have the training and support. Poor communication of expectation in the new company.

Pros

Work life balance not bad

Cons

Poor training, and employee support, If you use the open door policy about upper leadership you get fired immediately

It’s a place to work

You’ll be able to get a paycheck and put some gas in your car pay taxes things like that, but don’t expect to move up in the company because it’s not set up for that type of growth

Lumen

Worked for them for almost 24 years was a Supply Attendant for 15 years of the 23 plus years. I loved my work there but due to physical injuries I was no longer able to continue working there.

Pros

Benefits, appreciation of work

No Incentive to Work Here

This company is failing and overworks their field. Raises haven't been seen in 5+ years and HR's reasoning is bc we are in a deficit. Only way to get a raise here is to keep climbing the corporate ladder. People are leaving left and right. Would not recommend working here.

Amazing Culture and Direction

Like any organization, your team can make or break your experience. I happen to be on an amazing, supportive team that invests in my wellbeing. The direction our company is headed is exciting and I think great changes are coming. With that, there of course is pushback and inconsistent practices coming to light, so some people are unhappy they have to shift their work and internal culture to align.

Pros

Remote, flexible, good pay and benefits

Cons

Growth paths are inconsistent and it is hard to find opportunities to expand your skillset
