LSS has terrible house management. I've seen such high turnover due to poor house management. My supervisor seems to care more about covering their mistakes and using employees as scapegoats rather than properly supporting their clients. Employees are overworked and underpaid and under-trained for high risk individuals. OT is approved when convenient to the supervisors but often shunned when not. Change and suggestions by employees are often ignored and slow to implement. I would not recommend this job, unless you don't mind being on-call and drastically underpaid.
Volunteer and Community Engagement Manager (Current Employee) – Saint Paul, MN – November 2, 2018
Diversity is seen in lower level positions , but as you move up it starts to disappear, given the people we serve tend to be people of color, it would be good to see more representation in the organization.
Perks are work life balance, can work remotely, which is great.
House Coordinator (Current Employee) – Ada, MN – August 22, 2018
This will be my 12th year with LSS. I started as a DSP and changed positions twice to a House Coordinator presently. I have always had a flexible schedule with all of the positions I have worked. Although my work load is larger now, the scheduling allows me to balance my work/home life a lot better than it was juggled before. There are times where i'm contacted outside my scheduled hours but it is fair for my position. I can't imagine doing any other work in the years I've been here and those ahead. We are able to come to work and make a difference in someone's day by supporting them to achieve their hopes and dreams. We work in a positive atmosphere and work in an ALIVE workplace to promote that positivity and fun. LSS of MN also offers competitive benefits to those who are seeking a full- time in a job market where benefits are competitive to begin with. I get what I need to support my son and I and am happy to be employed at LSS of MN and have so many enjoyable years under my belt! I would recommend it to anyone with a big heart looking to make a difference and change lives while working.
Flexible schedule, benefits, support from co-workers
Administrative Assistant (Current Employee) – Minnesota – August 22, 2018
Working at LSS has allowed me a work/life balance that I never dreamed of. I am supported in my ideas and needs as well. There is a strong female presence in leadership and a strong stand on anti-racism within the organization which is always appreciated.
Direct Support Professional (Former Employee) – Saint Paul, MN – June 12, 2018
I enjoyed working with the individuals their, but the management was poor and did not mentor or assistance with any help you might need as a staff. The directors were not very good at helping out when you were short staffed and cause a lot of conflict within the company.the most enjoy about the job would to see the individuals accoplished their goals
DSP (Direct Support Professional) (Former Employee) – Moorhead, MN – May 31, 2018
It a great company to work, amazing staffs and people supported. The management at this site is horrible. People at the work place treat DSP with personal interest. The management are so unprofessional in such a way that they won't investigate what their HC tells them about DSP, but they just take actions. When DSP question why they were cheated, they become targets. They are looking for the next opportunity to terminate you. HC chooses who they think should work a shift for their personal interests. Don't get me wrong some of the HC are fantastic. I would recommend someone to work for this company but they need some changes in their management because some HC are going to make LSS lost some of their hardworking staffs.
Human Services Technician (Former Employee) – Willmar, MN – April 18, 2018
My years at LSS were very enjoyable; I started as a part-time overnight worker (in a group home), and advanced through positions until finishing as a house manager for the last several years of my employment. I was on a path to further advancement when the decision to close the home was made by LSS; I was offered an opportunity to relocate, but was unable to do so.
positive support specialist (Former Employee) – Saint Paul, MN – March 28, 2018
A typical day at work was a great distinction and honor to work with an eloquence individual who is a smooth talker; my supervisor. I learned respects and dignity. Management: Accountability, workplace culture: A great diverse culture and environment, the hardest part of the job, it is building the relationships with person-centered. communication between staff.
Coworkers are great and the individuals supported were nice. Supported individuals in their home. Made meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Assisted with personal cares like showers and toileting. Built very good relationships with everyone here.
DSP (Direct Support Professional) (Current Employee) – Faribault, MN – October 17, 2017
I have worked as a Direct Support Professional for 18 years, for 4 different companies in 2 different states. One of the companies was a smaller one, the others were large (over 100 employees). Of the larger companies, LSS has been the best large company I have worked for. They have an emphasis on both person-centered services and on developing employees' skills and interests. I have appreciated the learning opportunities, and the feedback I get from supervisors. They also emphasize a work-life balance by offering full-time employees the most generous leave package I have seen in this field. While most holidays are not paid due to the 24/7 nature of this work, full-time employees receive floating holidays in addition to PTO.
I'm very happy here, and I encourage anyone interested in this field to give LSS a try.
The people we serve are amazing, coworkers are fantastic, variety of tasks throughout the work day so it isn't boring.
House Coordinator (Current Employee) – Autumn House – August 17, 2017
I have been in positions of assisting individuals for quite a few years. Being here at in this capacity has given me an opportunity to expand on what I wanted to be able to do to assist the people with disabilities having a wonderful place to live and to expand on what they could do in their community and their life. I have really enjoyed working with my fellow workers in this endeavor. I find Lutheran Social Service to be a excellent employer and very caring about the people they hire.
There are a variety of jobs to fit everyone
Perhaps not always being able to take off when you would like
DSP (Direct Support Professional) (Current Employee) – Little Falls, MN – July 3, 2017
I like this company a lot. It has opened my eyes to many different ways of life such as care for different types of mentally ill or disables individuals. It has also changed my way eating habits. I think it would be better if more people worked here, but over all it is a good company and I enjoy working here. My typical day is always different. Depending on the house I work at. It may be the same routine but it still different everyday that I work. You never know what is going to happen good or bad. The hardest part is with not having enough staff I work a lot but I don't mind it at all. I just wish I could work at the other house I am trained at more but over all I like the house I work at now. I really enjoy helping the individuals. They make me want to come back every day.
DSP (Current Employee) – Little Falls, MN – June 29, 2017
I've enjoyed the years I have been with LSS, I have had the best Supervisors, who have always been there to help if there is a problem and also pat you on the back for a job well done. The people I work with show how much they appreciate me, and I like that we always have the necessary trainings to keep us updated and refresh our memories.
Direct Support Professional (Current Employee) – Moorhead, MN – June 1, 2017
I just so happened to know someone who encouraged me to apply for a position with this company. I am so happy that I did because it did not take long to feel right at home! This job is perfect for those who like to please others. It gives you opportunity to get to literally feel at home while at work, and who doesn't want that! This position takes someone who can show patience and understanding. You really need to always strive to put your best foot forward to help the people we support truly strive in life. This position is amazing and I joke frequently about how I will still be here where I am "old". Two thumbs up!
House Coordinator (Current Employee) – Baxter, MN – May 31, 2017
I never thought I would enjoy doing the this line of work. I have always done retail or restaurant types of jobs. My first day here I told my husband there is no way that I can do this. That was 5 1/2 yrs. ago and I am now a house coordinator at one of the homes. My career here is amazing. I get the privilege to support some fantastic people with their daily living. I also get the pleasure to do all the fun stuff with them such as fishing, day trips, picnics in the beautiful central Minnesota, camps, sports events and so much more. I feel our management team is amazing! They are there when you need them and are extremely supportive. In order to succeed in this type of atmosphere you must have compassion for others and I feel my management team has that! They are leaders not just our bosses.
Flexability, co-workers, Pto, the people supported and activities.
Finance Manager (Current Employee) – MN – May 31, 2017
Never have I worked with a team that is so caring, helpful, and passionate. Management always has your back and tries to help whenever and wherever they can. Our work is not easy, but the people we serve, and who we work with makes everything worth it.
House Coordinator (Current Employee) – Brainerd, MN – May 31, 2017
Having recently been under re-structuring, LSS has made great strides in the services that they provide for the individuals in their care. The training brings quality to the care the individuals receive. The addition of House Coordinators give the DSPs another avenue to approach with problems or concerns. The houses are geared toward the individuals and the staff are chosen as to what they bring. The environment is friendly and yet professional.
House Coordinator (Current Employee) – Virginia, MN – May 31, 2017
This job has brought a whole new life perspective to my eyes, I started as a DSP and moved up quickly to a house coordinator. Supporting individuals with disabilities is so rewarding, the smiles and goals they achieve with you by their side, the support you give helping with day to day tasks, the relationship and trust that grows. I had not worked in this field prior to coming to Lutheran Social Services. I will admit it was a little challenging and scary at first but the rewards have won my heart and gave me the passion for this job.
Rewarding work, flexability when full staffed, Great training Programs, Fun environment.
Short staff effects the individuals we support and also the employees.
Personal Support Services (Current Employee) – Statewide – May 31, 2017
LSS of MN is an amazing place to work if you enjoy meaningful work that helps others be the best they can be. My supervisor provides regular, helpful feedback to enhance the work I do. My schedule is very flexible and meets my family's needs while not interfering with the lives of the people I support. LSS benefits, by comparison to other organizations, is excellent and meets my family's needs. The people I support are the focus of all the work I do and helping them create great lives for themselves is the best part of my job. The organization makes me feel important by recognizing and celebrating my achievements and milestones. I couldn't imagine working anywhere else!
