Managers don’t care about their employees, even those of us who have been with the company for years.

They want you to be five places at once. As a sales associate, they want you to do management, stockroom, and loss prevention duties while also somehow providing one on one attention to your customers. They are understaffed and have a do more work with less people attitude, and you will learn many jobs outside of your official position. You will get yelled at for being on a register when the fitting rooms need cleaning. You will get yelled at for cleaning the fitting rooms while a customer is in your department. You could have a line wrapping around your department and your manager will remind you that your table of clothes needs folding because it’s a mess. Managers like to bark orders at you but remember to breathe deeply and tell yourself you are only one person. Just remember the most important thing is the customers within eyesight, as long as your priority is tending to them, that will get you out of any jam with your boss. You can work nonstop and the work will never be done, but the most important thing is the customers.

Loyal old school Macy’s customers remember the days of commissioned sales associates. You got paid twice as much and had four times as much help, so you could walk around with your customers and give them that one on one attention. Employees were trained on specific products, departments, product demonstrations, upselling, meeting sales quotas, etc. Those days are over, but the customers still expect that level of product knowledge and attention. I have worked at Macy’s twice many years apart and noticed this shift. It makes meeting the demands of your manager and customer very difficult and stressful. The classier customers who buy big ticket items will head to places like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus for the customer service. It’s frustrating to lose customers despite your best efforts.

Customers abuse the coupon and return policies. The real thieves are not the obvious shoplifters stuffing merchandise in a bag. Protect yourself and your job. Read the back of the coupons and know the rules to save yourself. The customer is -not- always right, though they think they are. They will try to pull stuff to get discounts and return old used stuff, or switch price tags, but remember you can lose your job. Get a managers approval and let them override under their employee number-don’t risk your job for these crook customers. Macy’s really needs to sort out their policies and procedures for these customers. It makes for fun break room drama and stories though.
