Wellness Counselor in Tigard, OR
on March 18, 2022
My experience was mostly positive. There was some stress but that goes with this kind of work. Wellness counselors were really supportive, and care a lot about the kids. The CEO’S that started the place are still there. They give their all to keep it running, including working the floor at times, and really care about the kids a lot! Management was all supportive, good experience with them outside of one unit coordinator. She was too close with some clients, best friends with some subordinates which affected other staff who she didn’t favor! Her and a old creepy group leader started dating, it make the clients and staff uncomfortable and they were so obvious it was Disgusting

We have a lot of communication at the beginning of the day. Once we are on the floor we know the schedule and we have to be very present to supervise the kids so it's a big deal if people don't show up or do not actually take their job seriously. The leaders are taking this more seriously and letting people go who are not professional or appropriate to work with kids.

Those who work at Madrona care so much about the work they do. Everyone here is passionate about providing quality care for the teens here, and wants to see staff and clients succeed. They are still a small and young program, with a lot of opportunity for growth. This means they rely on staff to speak up and provide a lot of feedback about programming and policy, which I personally love! I feel like I am helping to form new curriculum and a brand new approach to residential care. This work is hard and weighs heavily on the heart sometimes. I have been thankful for the healthy work life balance and the encouragement to leave work at work, without it many more people would be burning out.

Can be chaotic at times but most facilities are. This place is fairly new so it’s still developing which has its pros and its cons. The work is either extremely easy or very difficult depending on how the kids are and what mood they’re in that day. Staff is all nice and very welcoming to newcomers and most really care about the kids and their jobs. It used to be a complete disaster all the time but 2 new supervisors came in a few months ago and it’s been getting A LOT better and will probably only go up from here! Upper management should be more involved but they’re really nice and seem to take in a lot of good feedback. Rules for the kids definitely need to be thrown out and start brand new because really difficult kids can basically do whatever they want and staff can’t do anything about it

Compensation is better than other programs I really like the kids we serveIt can be stressful to work with dysregulated teenagers but you get use to it and it feels wonderful to know you make a difference in a critical time in a persons life. The program is very effective for lots of kids and families. I'm happy to be apart of this team.
