I've been a special service provider (psychologist/social worker) for almost 10 years, and I have NEVER experienced a district that runs like Mapleton (not in a good way). The people in the Special Ed department are great, but the fact that they only have 1 SSP in each building, where most students are experiencing active trauma, is a huge red flag, and a total disservice to the students. Buildings should absolutely have two SSP's, in order to adequately and equitably provide support to students. Because of this, I basically had to sacrifice my own mental health in order to support the students in my building.I also got screwed financially. Everywhere else, an SSP degree falls in the MA+30 lane on the salary schedule, because our education level is higher than just a master's degree. But when I sat down at the table to sign my contract, I was told "A master's degree is a master's degree, it doesn't matter how many credits it was", and was forced to take a huge pay cut with no chance of negotiation. With 60+ credits of graduate level education, I should not be making the same salary as a person with a 24 credit master's degree. With the Denver cost of living, I couldn't afford to stay in this job if I wanted to because they just simply don't have a high enough salary to make it work. So that was a huge bummer, and I would never recommend this district to an SSP for that reason alone, when they could go to DPS and get paid in the MA+30 or even PhD lane (12k+ higher). I did appreciate the family-like atmosphere of the building and the special ed team. There are tons of people -

Pros

close knit, family-like atmosphere; solid special ed department where everyone is on a first name basis

Cons

pay is awful, not enough support in the buildings

Horrible

This district is awful! My biggest career regret is ever working in Mapleton. The nepotism that happens is unbelievable, and it is why student achievement is so low. Students and parents are in complete charge and make all the decisions.

Pros

None

Cons

Nepotism, district and school leadership, student standards and expectations.

People

Everyone I've met at Mapleton Public schools has been friendly and welcoming. I can't say that about many of the schools where I've been a substitute.

Rewarding

Bar none the best school district i have worked for. The teachers will work with you for the most part. There are always going to be a couple bad apples but most of the staff will work with you. The kids are very diverse. Speaking Spanish can help a ton as there is a good amount of Spanish speaking kids but most are bilingual.

Burned me all the way out of education

They will take and take and take from you and never give you anything bad. They ignore all behavior problems and pile their teachers with unrealistic expectations.

Pros

Coworkers

Cons

All else

Amazing!

I worked for Mapleton Online. I had amazing administration. Amazing co-workers. The absolute best district I have worked for. The amount of training opportunities they provide their teachers was something I had not ever had at a previous charter school I had worked for. The only reason I had to go was they did not have the numbers to keep me on as a remote teacher. I was sad to leave. I can’t say enough about this district.

Pros

Everything

Cons

Nothing

Small district and caring personal

I worked for 15 years and worked with many wonderful people. It was a solid teaching assignment with opportunities for professional development. It was nice place to work.

Pros

Small district

Cons

Sub coverage

Administration does not care about lower workers

The district makes it very difficult for employees such as substitutes to climb towards and permanent position. They are inconsiderate of your individual needs or opinions. There is also a large wage gap, and I had many employees brag to me about their salary, which was often more than triple mine for a similar position.

Pros

Easy commute

Cons

Poor administration, large pay gap

Mapleton school is like a big family that cares for all students!

Mapleton is a very small public school in Oregon located 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. I substitute when needed. The students travel 5-15 miles on the bus to get to school.Their school week is a 4 day week. Mapleton is a beautiful place on the Siuslaw River. Many residents hunt and fish here and do water sports in the summer. The students have free breakfast, and reduced lunches, Mapleton provides many field trips, and activities. that promote organization, and responsibility. High School students do get to compete in basic sports with other schools. In the winter you might see 3-6 inches of snow, and between 70 and 130 inches of rain. That's what helps bring out the deer and elk and gives a natural resource for the many creeks and small waterfalls in the area on the many hiking trails.

Pros

The school community promotes a variety of learning opportunities even though it is small.

Cons

Students have to travel quite a distance, and some have attendance issues.

Typical day was a very busy day.

My typical day was very busy, and lots of flexible was needed. You work with a great team of teachers that are very dediciated to their students. There is a great support group for students. The hardest part of the job is trying to accommodate all the students needs from day to day. The most rewarding part of the job when you see a student succeed on something they have worked really hard on.

Horrible place to work

If you don't belong to thier group, you are treated like an outcast. This place is full of clicks and brown nosers. I have never had a worse experience in my life. Incompetent is an understatement. They ignore when you bring details to managements attention and they lie profusely. There are much better schools to work at than this dump.

I got to learn new skills

With my work experience i got to learn new skills which has helped me over the last two years. As i was responsible for younger children it made me step up and become a role model for younger students. That helped me grow my confidence and ability to believe in myself.

Substitute teacher

As a substitute teacher, I found Mapleton District to be very welcoming. The staff was always helpful when I had questions. I would work here if I were looking for a full time position.

Would have rather just worked with students and not staff

I worked for there for approximately two school years. I worked with the special needs students. I didn't have a degree but was expected to make curriculum for special needs students.

Pros

working with students

Cons

not having the training to properly help the students

Great culture and climate

The hardest part of the job is working with children of trauma. You don't always know right away who these children are and they often present themselves as having other problems before figuring out they are in fact a child of trauma.
