No worker appreciation and low pay
CDL A Truck Driver (Former Employee) - Flint, MI - August 25, 2023
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedIt got better after a few years but I was paid $160 a day for 13 hour days. You were treated like a butt in a seat. I had to go elsewhere so I could make ends meet. I guess they pay a fair wage now but not back a few years ago. When I started the equipment was garbage but eventually improved. I didn't hate the job but I had to look for something better. I have a few friends that still work there and they say it has improved over the last couple years.
Pros
Great garage
Cons
Not treated very well

It would have been a good place to work if the favoritism wasn't so prevalent.
Truck Driver Class A CDL (Former Employee) - Grand Prairie, TX - September 19, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? The money, when the let you work enough hours. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The terminal manager didnt even try to hide his favoritism. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Good for the favorites, the rest of us just picked up the crumbs that were left. What is a typical day like for you at the company? If you were a favorite you would get between 10 and 12 hours a day. If you were not you would get between 2 and 7 hours a day.

Company Driver (Former Employee) - Detroit, MI - September 11, 2023
My job here started off pretty good. Everything seemed fine until my loads started getting canceled and they weren't able to find me any other loads. Only had maybe two full 5 day work weeks during my employment there. Trucks are poorly maintained. You can write the trucks up for repairs but they won't get fixed anytime soon. Just hope you don't get a DOT inspection. All trucks are 10 speed manuals. None of the trucks have GPS. You have to use your own or use what they print out for you. Toledo dispatchers were always helpful. Pay was okay. If I knew what I know now, I wouldn't have taken the position.

It's different for everyone. Runs very smoothly, pays very well. They take great care of their equipment and employees. Pick up or deliver car parts.
Pros
Money and time
Cons
They some times have days off for multiple weeks.

Easy work when Plants are fully operational
CDL Class A Driver (Current Employee) - Bridgeton, MO - August 17, 2023
The job is easy, and the pay is excellent, but Ford and GM have not been consistent lately. If you are a new hire, they will keep you running for a while so you don't quit because of lack of runs, but as soon as new people come in, you will be lucky to work 2 or 3 days a week. We lost our terminal yards, so now we are in a drop yard that can get holes more prominent than a Volkswagon. There is no point in keeping your vehicle clean because the dust bowl always keeps it dirty. There is a significant lack of communication, and the new management and planners lack experience in this field. We used to be able to run consistently every day, but those days are over. There was great potential to make over $80K a year, but you'll be lucky to make $65K now. This place is excellent if you don't mind not working every day or maybe looking to retire. Management will tell you what you want to hear and is very good at making himself sound like he knows what he is doing, but in reality, he talks in circles but sounds good when speaking. The trucks are old and break down all the time unless you get a truck that starts with an 813 or higher. The head mechanic at the St. Louis shop is horrible and lazy, but he is considered the golden boy of Corporate. It's an easy job but beware of the lack of work once you have been here a while.

Policies mean nothing to upper management.
Commercial Driver (Former Employee) - Detroit, MI - July 26, 2023
The terminal manager is the only good thing about this mts location. Dispatch lies about route. Recent $2000 a month pay cut. They policy handbook means literally nothing. They will fire you without another thought. Doesn’t matter the loyalty you show to the company or the extra shifts u do to help them. When u ask about there policy book they say it’s more of a guideline and Michigan is an at will state and they’re at will to fire you whenever they feel like it.
Pros
Terminal manager
Cons
Unexpected pay cuts, lying dispatch, trucks with no a/c, all smoking trucks, dirty truck, old and broken trucks that they still expect u to drive

Not family oriented
Class A CDL Driver (Current Employee) - Springfield, IL - July 9, 2023
Your just a driver to them they don't care about what you have going on with your family or anything else. And they will decrease your pay for no reason. They will also pull you from a dedicated route they assigned you.

Just say no
CDL Class A Driver (Former Employee) - Indianapolis, IN - June 27, 2023
Alternating 5 and 6 day work weeks, below average pay and poorly maintained equipment. They slip seat and on a couple days I had to wait a while to find a truck that I felt safe driving.
Pros
Plenty of work
Cons
Low pay, poorly maintained trucks, cameras facing driver

Jobs at Martin Transportation Systems
No job security
Owner/Operator (Former Employee) - Byron Center, MI - June 15, 2023
If you’re an owner operator, they will shut you down and feed their company drivers first. Even if none of the company drivers even want the run you’re on.

Good company, managers not so much
Driver (Current Employee) - Detroit, MI - June 4, 2023
It's not bad when they have the runs for you. Seem to lose work regularly. They come up with other work, but if you like a steady predictable route, you may or may not find it here.

Underpaid / No respect
Dispatcher (Former Employee) - Byron Center, MI - May 4, 2023
Expect to not get promoted or have to beg for raises even after working there 3+ years. Management doesn't care about you unless you play their game, whatever that game may be -- good luck

Love the manager, days are long, loads can get shuffled.
Driver (Current Employee) - Spring Hill, TN - March 21, 2023
The Spring Hill location is crazy, in a good way. I like working here because the dispatchers are very nice, and the terminal manager is the best man I have ever worked for. He has been the only reason several of us haven't quit for other places. The terminal operates out of a fifth wheel travel trailer, something you wont see anywhere else! They make it work even having to deal with GM and all their nonsense.
