Very large hospital, high volume of calls and fast paced

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
I worked for two departments at MGH, starting right before the pandemic hit. Both offices were very fast paced and often high stress. Both of my managers were relatively reasonable and had some great comraderie with my coworkers. Working in a hospital this large can be frustrating at times since there is a lot of bureaucracy and miscommunications. However, the pay and benefits cannot be beat.

fast-paced, learn on the go

The work environment at MGH is professional and collaborative. There is a strong sense of teamwork among colleagues, and the hospital's reputation adds a sense of prestige to the workplace. The pace can be fast, and the workload can be demanding at times. Highly depends on the lab and the amount of training in place

RN - Floor Nurse

Okay place to work. Feels like there have been a lot of changes internally. Enjoy the support RNs again. Disappointed as it doesn't seem like APPs get much support which leads to severe burnout for them. This directly impacts my job and patient care.

Fine

Good place if you want to get some research experience. People are pretty busy so you definitely have to advocate for yourself, but overall a good start

Collaborative and supportive environment

Everyone is committed to very advanced science. Management is supportive and PIs are understanding and helpful. Plenty of opportunity to couple basic research with translational medicine.

Good culture

Intelligent and driven colleagues make work more enjoyable. There can be some resistance to change in a legacy place like MGH, but overall it is a great place to work.

Great stepping stone

Started this job to determine if I wanted to pursue a career in medicine. It’s a really good job and place to meet people. You learn a lot about how working in a hospital is and there are endless opportunities to learn.

The environment was not only conducive for research but also for personal and professional growth. I had the pleasure of working with friendly colleagues who made the experience even more enjoyable.

Once Highly Sought After Department Now Rivals Contract Firms

Security Officer at the main hospital and various other satellite locations. Department once had more prestige linked to it, but due to the overall negative societal views of public safety and law enforcement, along with a much more liberal medical staff, the job is no longer what it once was. Pay is average, there are non-union and senior management uses scare tactics to promote the job and that you should be happy and proud to work for them. Huge disconnect as well from senior management as they don't understand the difficulties of the job but like to play Monday - Friday morning QB. If you want to be a police officer, become a police officer, do not come here and waste your time. You'll gain more skills at a fast food or retail environment.

They suck. No regard for people, their livelihoods, etc.

What is the best part of working at the company? It's a horrible place to work. I tempted for 4 days, was doing well and the assignment was ended. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Never being told how u r doingWhat is the work environment and culture like at the company? No training, rude co workers, told at 500 on a Friday assignment is over. My reason? I said a resident's picture looked like his eyes were closed! What is a typical day like for you at the company?Go in, wing it until 5;00 each day.

Great work place if you don't mind being busy.

What is the best part of working at the company?Senior management. Supports staff. They hear your ideas and are willing to trial them. They make you feel heard. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The commute. MGH highly recommends taking the T. The parking waiting list is 10+ years long. The T in Massachusetts is horrible. What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Work environment is independent. No micromanagement. What is a typical day like for you at the company?Busy. Daily meeting, making sure patients have been placed, busy phones, answering questions about resources.

Micromanaging, No Doctors, Only care about money

Micromanaging, no doctors, only care about money, will sell insurance even if there are no doctors, supervisors expect you to smooth things out with patients, high turnover

Nice place to work. Patient ration is fare.

My department working culture is great. People are helping to each other. Sometimes, patience could be very heavy. Inpatient floors offering day night rotating shifts for new hirs. But no set schedule.

Pros

1:3 patent ratio and 1:4 night shift

Cons

Hard to take earn time off

Opportunities abound for career advancement, but ethics and care are often cast aside

MGH is a fantastic workplace if you are ambitious and want to prove yourself as a leading thinker in healthcare. However, it has been my experience that frequently career advancement is prioritized above all else. I and colleagues have been told that we cannot move forward on data analysis for papers due to (empirically true) findings contradicting the findings of my lab's collaborators. Authorship is handed out like candy, as long as you stay loyal and quiet. There are brilliant people who work here. There are also immoral people who work here, who have established a power hierarchy for themselves that doesn't seem to be going to topple anytime soon. The stamp of Harvard supports the status quo.

Not much Flexibility but chill workplace

Work is pretty standard and doesn’t change day to day. I work hard stocking in the morning and turning rooms over. When it’s busy, it’s busy. They don’t consider my role group when looking at the caseload, and it seems like they don’t care very much for all their support staff as a whole, but individual nurses seem appreciative.
