Nursing Union was helpful at retaining employees
Registered Nurse (Former Employee) –  Mount Clemens, MIAugust 15, 2018
I was overall content with working at this facility. The benefits and PTO could be improved, but it was a decent enviornemt to work in and the staff displayed good teamwork.

Horrible place to work
Hospice nurse (Former Employee) –  Sterling Heights, MIAugust 15, 2018
I worked in hospice, the leasership is mean and punitive branch manager has no clue what hospice is. This company has been around for a long time but still acts like a baby hospice company. They cant figure out how to provide good care to the patients. Huge lack of resources for the field staff. Leadership not supportive at all, has double standards for every employee. Leadership is always asking for you to work more hours and doesnt pay overtime. My paycheck is always short hours so I have to chase my pay down all the time. With this large of a company I should be paid correctly. They are forever changing protocols and do not communicate changes to employees. Overall I would NEVER reccommend anyone to work there. The wages ate higher than other hospice companies but good luck getting paid for it.
Pros
Decent pay
Cons
Poor company and poor patient care

Medical Receptionist (Current Employee) –  Bay City, MIAugust 7, 2018
very fast paced and stressful,, receptionists have a lot of responsibilities, low pay and no respect. The more you do the more they expect you to do. You ask for a raise but you won't get one.

hardest part of job
Insurance Verification Specialist (Current Employee) –  Petoskey, MIAugust 6, 2018
most recently the hardest part of the job is that we are down 5 people soon to be 6. I believe it is of new management and scheduling. Manager very nice but in way over their head. Workers not respected for there work. Just asked to work harder and not appreciated. Love my job but my doctor told me I needed to look for something else because my stress and anxiety are getting to much out of control.

Not a great environment
Registrar (Former Employee) –  Mt. Clemens, MIAugust 5, 2018
Not a professional environment to work in. McLaren does not treat its employees with respect or dignity. It is not an environment that reflects treating patients and employees fairly.

Poor management
Sterile Processing Technician (Former Employee) –  Mt. Clemens, MIAugust 1, 2018
Poor Management and unfair working environment , decisions based on favoritism, hard to get a day off due to manager being unfair to some associates. Department is very unorganized, manager does not like to upgrade department, and the department has a high turn over! I'm glad I left although there are some nice people within the department, it was not enough to change the fact that Leadership needs to look in to their managers behavior!! A lot is swept under the rug!
Cons
Hard to get days off.

Huge Family
OR - RN (Former Employee) –  Flint, MIAugust 1, 2018
Working in the operating room was fast paced team work. Communication was always delivered among those in the room. Coworkers are a family that looks out for one another professionally and personally. You never knew what to expect on the weekends for cases....it was what ever came in the ER and was an emergency.

BEWARE- You do NOT want to work for McLaren
Patient Access Representative (Former Employee) –  Petoskey, MIJuly 29, 2018
Every absence counts against you, there are no excused absences. You work around sick people and if you get sick, too bad so sad. You get 10 days and then you are done. Kids are sick? Too Bad. Your loved one died? Too Bad. You have the flu? Too Bad. Your vehicle breaks down? Too Bad. You have to pick up your kids because their school has a bomb threat? Too Bad. Your child has an accident at school and broke their arm? Too Bad.
They want you there working at 7 minutes before the hour you are scheduled, but you aren’t paid until the top of the hour. They tell you that it is your responsibility to be logged in, open all the programs you will be using, and be ready to work at the time you are scheduled. If you are supposed to start at 8am, then you need to be working 7 minutes prior, but NOT be paid because the Kronos time keeping system will not pay you until 8am. They also want you to work right up to 5pm taking calls on the patient jump line, which is open 9-5, but in order to finish helping the patient and close all the programs and punch out it takes you another 6-7 minutes of which you are NOT paid because Kronos will bump you back to 5pm clock out. There is no overtime allowed either, so they want you to work FREE 14 minutes a day and that equal 1 hour and 10 minutes of YOUR life every week that you are not being paid. Nice right? Who cares about you? It's all about them. This organization takes and takes and takes from you, but doesn't want to give back.
You are forced to use any accumulated vacation time when you miss ANY scheduled hours for any
more... reason, so basically you can't take a real vacation with your time because there isn't any available because they apply it at their discretion instead of giving you the choice of using it or not.
They consider you tardy at one minute past your scheduled time, no exceptions.
I have never worked anywhere that you don't have a cushion of at least 5 minutes before being counted tardy.
They will not allow you to request a day off in advance if you do not have vacation hours at the time of your request, even if you will have the hours available by the time the requested day comes up. If there is a doctor’s appointment that you have had in place and can't switch with someone to have the day off, you have to keep rescheduling your appointment. Some specialists are booked six or more months out, so it is nearly impossible for you to keep any important appointments.
You only get 30 minutes for lunch, so you can't work any errands into your lunch break. You do not get any additional 10 or 15 minute breaks either.
Dealing with the insurance companies to get prior authorizations for patients in place before their procedures is very stressful and you are yelled at if a patient gets through without one. They are constantly picking at you about little things that you did incorrectly ( even if you had no clue you doing it wrong because of bad training), but never give you credit for everything you are doing right.
You only get small percentage raises on the pay (currently $12.91 per hour) that you hire in at, so you will NOT get anything more no matter how long you work there.
The work itself is very tedious, they want you to collect money from patients over the phone, and if you don't meet the quota, it is counted against you at your performance review.

Catering Assistant (Former Employee) –  Port Huron, MIJuly 25, 2018

Director of Operations (Current Employee) –  Flint, MIJuly 24, 2018
McLaren is a non profit that is run like a for profit company. Finance is the primary concern of the culture even though they try and put on a face of patient and employee first.

HR and management turnover is high.
Pros

Security Director has no clue.
Security Officer (Former Employee) –  Mt. Clemens, MIJuly 20, 2018
The officers are put in dangerous situations in the mental health area, Mentally I'll are placed with drunk homeless people and drug addicts. There is no place to put all the people that come in with problems. Management does not support officers and the nurses are stupid. They have no idea how to deal with that population.

N/A (Current Employee) –  Flint, MIJuly 2, 2018
McLaren Health Plan is very old-school. Much will depend on your upper management and or director. There is not much for flex-time, even for salaried employees. No employee referral, and no upward mobility. Very stagnant and not open to new and fresh ideas. There is not even a place to rest your head for a minute in peace if you don't feel well, except for the lactation room. They took down the cubed walls and put us in tiny tiny half cubicles. Very cramped, very noisy, very uncomfortable. No privacy, no where to make a private call. Sure there is a "break room" in the basement, where your voice echos across the large open space of tables and chairs-again - no privacy even during our "break time". The cell service and wifi are very spotty to say the least in our allowed "break room" area. So a private phone call must usually be made outside the building. In the dead of winter is miserable! The upper executives seem to be very out of touch with their work force.
Pros
close to home
Cons
Poor, old-fashioned culture. Pay scale below national averages.
