Solid
Manager (Current Employee) - Chicago, IL - March 23, 2023
Government agency. Great pension. Promote from within. Long tenured staff. Great union employees. Standard 8 hr day, but start times are very early, true in all railroads.

Very politically and how u connected
Coach cleaner (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - February 20, 2023
The only way u can be treated right and fairly in this company is by the way u are connected politically. If u get hurt they always make it look like it’s your fault and they treat the people that don’t do any work better than people that do work. They don’t care about anyone unless you are well connected politically. Worst place to work.

1 star
Locomotive Engineer (Former Employee) - Rock Island - January 25, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? The 13th and the 28th. That about sums it up. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The fact that workers are forced to comply with the code of public opinion, or be ostracized, ridiculed, labeled, mocked, and humiliated. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Anything, but uplifting, encouraging, and positive. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Keep it positive, give’ them what they want, mind my business, get out of there and go home. Don’t take anything home from the job. It’s contaminated, infected, or poison.

Trackman is Railroad
Machine Operator/Trackman (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - November 6, 2022
It’s what you make it. Has the potential to be very great but not much room for growth. The benefits are great because it is Railroad so the perks are great
Pros
Money, outdoors, benefits, healthcare
Cons
Forced OT, no advancement, nepotism

A great start for youngsters
Journeyman Electrician (Current Employee) - Chicago, IL - November 2, 2022
Like with any job, keep your head down and mind your own business. Most people are very easy to work with. The work is not difficult. Know your job!!!

depends on your department
Contract (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - July 20, 2022
Ask lots of questions about flexibility and taking time off, and what is important to you in a job. Because depending on your department and manager you will either be pleased or feel constrained with flexibility for working and having a life outside of work.
Pros
some people are very nice that work there
Cons
no discounts on metra tickets

Easy place to work but zero chance for advancement.
Carman/Welder (Current Employee) - Chicago, IL - June 28, 2022
Some decent places to work and decent people to work with but no chance for advancement if not a protected status used for leverage or a family member of management.
Pros
good hours
Cons
nepotism, micromanagement

Overall one of the best jobs I had. The longest by far.
Bridge and Building Mechanic (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - June 16, 2022
Great work experience, Learning experience, & it was fun working in Group call Gangs lead by A Forman. Given instructions of duty daily by the Supervisor.

Cons
Working outside In the element, & 1 30 minutes lunch break.

Jobs at Metra Railroad
Productive and busy workdays. Friendly people to have fun with. Some flexibility in work schedule.
Lead Payroll Clerk (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - April 21, 2022
Very friendly atmosphere in some departments. Too much stress is put on union employees. Once you do something management does not like, you are frowned upon.

Must be part of "The club" to succeed.
COMMUNICATION MAINTAINER (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - April 19, 2022
Everybody was protective of the information needed to succeed. Management and co-workers would intentionally set you up for failure. The overall work environment was toxic.

Great job for slackers
Pipefitter (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - March 24, 2022
Show up on time, keep your head down and wait thirty years. Don’t challenge the management. Don’t expect change. Don’t expect anything and your good to go.
Pros
Lots of down time.
Cons
Run by morons

Good pay but the environment is dangerous
Train Conductor (Current Employee) - Chicago - February 16, 2022
You will be on call with very little work life balance. Also there is very little concern for your safety and well being. Best thing about being a conductor for this company is the compensation but you will have to pay very close attention to your pay check because the payroll people are terrible.

People are nice, managers bad.
Coach Cleaner/Carman Mechanical Department (Former Employee) - La Salle, IL - November 2, 2021
typical day at work is fast paced and very physical. I have learned to work fast and manage my time well. Management Does not care about its employees and puts all there effort into collecting there bonus regardless of the outcome. My co-workers are great people who deserve better. The hardest part of the job is dealing with management they are educated people with no hands on experience that do not recognize any feedback from its workers. The most enjoyable part of the job is the honest days work.
Pros
Gifts and good breaks
Cons
Stress, bad management

Job security, great salary, but interacting with some of the officials can be very challenging
Conductor (Current Employee) - Chicago, IL - October 7, 2021
When you first start off in this craft I can honestly say it’s going to rough. You have no seniority to hold a regular assignment. Therefore, you have to be on the on call list . In the winter time it is slow and you may not get called out much to work. Don’t worry, you will still be able to pay your bills because they pay you a days pay whether u work or not. But in the spring, summer, and fall, be prepared to work every day up to 14 days straight before u get 2 mandatory days off.
Pros
High end layover facilities, bunk beds-lazy boys
Cons
Long days, quick turnaround, some incompetent officials, obsolete equipment

Interesting. Workplace
Coach Cleaner (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - September 4, 2021
All I can say is no matter how right you might be when it comes to management they are going to still say you are wrong, moving up is almost impossible unless you know someone.
Pros
N/a
Cons
Pay isn’t worth the responsibilities

Very little compenstion for the amount of stress.
Electrician (Former Employee) - Illinois - July 26, 2021
Too much responsibility for the amount of pay being given. Having little to any training and expected to have all this compacted in a very short amount of time. Stressful environment.
Pros
Paid luch, vacation, holiday pay.
Cons
Living at work to make any money.

Very good job
Electrician (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - June 9, 2021
Very good work environment with many different shifts and locations. Good training with top of the line tools and equipment. I enjoyed working certain management is lacking. People running shops who don’t know a thing and you suffer.
Pros

Cons

Paid very well
GEB CLERK (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - May 18, 2021
The pay and the benefits are excellent. But the stress that comes along with the job is not. It’s not even the work that makes it difficult, it’s the oriole who have been placed in positions of authority based off of who they know instead of what they know. A lot of the top tier managers did things so backwards it was embarrassing. Lack of communication unless it’s dealing with gossip and the TCU Union is horrible! They are only collecting a paycheck. Don’t even let me get started on them. It’s definitely a great company to get back on your feet, but stay to yourself and bid in immediately.
Pros
Great pay, and benefits
Cons
Everything else

Management are bullies
Employeed (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - March 31, 2021
The pay is good and the benefits as well, with that said, they hire to fire. You have to look over your shoulder if you are not in the group. The managers are liars, slick, and have no sense of how to manage, a monkey can do their job better.
Pros
Pay and benefits
Cons
Management being bullies and micro as well.
