MITRE is a great company to work for. They are an FFRDC company that works in all levels of the government. The opportunities that MITRE can provide an employee is ideal and competitive.

Relaxed work environment, for creative, intellectual folks
Engineering Internship (Former Employee) –  MarylandFebruary 10, 2019
The work here is interesting and often requires learning new skills to finish the task. It is a research-oriented organization, so there is a great deal of freedom and autonomy in choosing your next project. However, I often felt that the culture was lacking, and I didn't always feel as though my work was being appreciated.
Pros
Relaxed work environment, great benefits
Cons
No cafeteria, too quiet in secluded offices, not enough coworker interaction

Engaged, friendly people, focused on complex challenges for the US government and other sponsors. Corporate culture is shifting to become faster and more efficient (and thus more likely to expect employees to know their role and to prove that their work contributes to the mission). Well worthy of the "great place to work" awards they achieved over the years.

Room for advancement, Excellent Pay
Executive (Former Employee) –  McLean, VAOctober 25, 2018
Mitre has an amazing group of professionals within it's company from a wide field of expertise. You can grow from the bottom up or come in as a professional and advance to the top.

HR is not very good at keeping your information (or EEO issues), confidential. If you talk to them, you might as well put it on Facebook. The Executives need to appreciate their support staff and be mindful that people are not robots - they have feelings and needs and live outside of this company.

If you have anything to complain about, you honestly cannot trust many people, (especially the executives and some of the EA's). If you want honest help, go to the people who are working far below the Executive staff - that's just the truth. The cut-throat things I've witnessed is sickening so be careful with these "mind" professionals, because they play a lot of mental games with people. Sometimes position and titles can make a person think more highly of themselves than they really are.

As always, it's not the company or the programs that are necessarily negative - it's the people. The company as a whole is great but keep to yourself if you have issues. People and their toxic personalities are what make an office a place to work, or not.
Pros
Good Pay, Room to Advance, High Tech, Free Parking, Everything is on-site, Exceptional Cultural Balance
Cons
Not good at training, HR Dept. needs an overhaul, TOO much drama on the Executive Floor

Good people doing important work. Very poor executive leadership and decision making particularly in the COO and CFO roles that are adversely impacting corporate culture and quality.
Pros
Awesome intellectual horsepower, good place to learn, different technical domains
Cons
Quickly declining infrastructure, financial operations and quality of work life.

Stagnant Corporation
Group Leader/Supervisor (Current Employee) –  McLean, VAAugust 25, 2018
MITRE's culture is a hybrid of government and academia, that has continued to slide into obscurity over the past decade. The new CEO's push for change without removing the deadwood that continues to pull standards down, has resulted in Operations vs. Line Organization infighting at one end and passive-aggressive protectionism at the other. MITRE offers a lot of good things on paper but the current environment makes working there unpalatable.
Pros
Flexible work schedules
Cons
Dysfunctional management, lack of career growth

Subcontracts Administrator Contractor (Former Employee) –  McLean, VAJuly 7, 2018
While the pay was good, issues with management not responding to requests or issues. Job advancement had problems where favoritism was involved. Job culture was bad, either people kept to themselves or was very cliquish

Engineer (Current Employee) –  McLean, VAMay 24, 2018
The company is going through a lot of changes, which has many employees feeling nervous and confused. The recent layoffs and the upcoming round of layoffs that were announced have changed the culture and work environment.
Pros
nice workspaces, good benefits, interesting work, smart people
Cons
too many changes and layoffs, the pay isn't amazing, the future is unclear

SENIOR CONSULTANT (Current Employee) –  McLean, VAApril 19, 2018
MITRE is a wonderful place to work, with fairly supportive management. MITRE has wonderful benefits and flexible working arrangements. The only downside is that MITRE moves at a snails pace when it comes to promotions. This continues to come up in employee surveys, but nothing is really done to improve this area. Departments continue to bring in new talent, but do not do a good job promoting staff accordingly. MITRE is filled with awesome talent, which makes it extremely competitive.

Not a bad summer
Drone Designer - Mechatronic Engineering Intern (Former Employee) –  Charlottesville, VAFebruary 5, 2018
If you are being recruited for an internship at MITRE, beware that the culture and environment of the external sites are very different from the headquarters. There are very few people around, and obviously none of the fancy amenities of HQ. That said, the internship is challenging in a good way. You are placed on projects with other interns and given real responsibility.
Pros
Good pay, mentor, challenging projects
Cons
Small office

A professional and generally happy place to work.
Financial Analyst (Former Employee) –  Hampton, VAJanuary 8, 2018
A typical day would consist of financial reporting, budgeting, analysis, and customer service. Several hours spent working with project leaders, department and division managers, and portfolio directors. Most of these positions were located in CONUS and OCONUS sites, so communication involved many forms of technology.

The work was varied, which allowed me to use many of my skills in different scenarios. I enjoyed excellent working relationships with most of those I supported.

As the corporate culture went through several policy changes, we were often placed in positions requiring us to 'do more with less.' Promoting staff into managerial positions, without giving any meaningful management training. The focus was more on managing people than on leadership qualities.
Pros
Excellent benefits
Cons
Most managers lacked true leadership qualities.

Sr. Information Security Engineer (Current Employee) –  McLean, VANovember 21, 2017
- Great management and atmosphere. The culture is relaxed and isn't cut-throat like some places can be.
- Work/life balance is above-average.
- Would like to have more WFH flexibility given traffic in the Northern, VA area.
