Modern Take, Not Modern Wages.
Senior Veterinary NURSE (Current Employee) - West Hollywood, CA - July 17, 2023
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedWhat is the best part of working at the company? Staff members are all friendly and have great work ethic. If you manage to make it to tech week. Good tech week presents. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? No supportive staff. VA and RVT required to fill in the blanks. Do all roles. Receptionist, TA, kennel, janitorial, finish work care summaries for Doctors. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? The environment and culture was positive and not out right toxic but still exploits their staff who come from different educational backgrounds. Pay them the minimum, expect quality and profit. What is a typical day like for you at the company? About 75 patients are scheduled daily. Spread out between different zones. You will get tasked to an area. More than Likely Beg your coworkers for second pair of hands since they do not pair you with another tech. Responsibility falls on you to create plan, estimate, care summary, discharges, recheck appt, don’t forget to charge them out and ask if they want water on the way out.

New leadership casting a dark cloud
DVM (Current Employee) - California - November 15, 2023
I since the start of the year a new VP was brought in. They have since brought others from their failing past company. They do not exhibit the Modern Animal culture. Concerned about the future with these new managers driving the business. Just because you wear the uniform does not make you one of us.
Pros
Once bright mission
Cons
New leaders are flunkies for other vet groups

Fun, comfortable, and progressive place to work.
Senior Virtual Care Veterinary Nurse (Current Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - July 8, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Being able to work remotely!! The company makes an effort to help you feel connected even working remotely. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? As we are still a start up (open for 3 years), there constant changes with software, operations, etc. Sometimes these don't work well and that can make things difficult to work with. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Fantastic! There is a real effort to maintain good company wide culture and good working environment.

Culture claims are a smoke screen. RUN as fast as you can.
Virtual Care Veterinary Technician (Former Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - April 1, 2023
Initially when I joined this brand, I was enthusiastic about what they preached regarding culture, associate well-being and growth. We had amazing leadership, who advocated for quality medicine and associate well-being. Our team was well supported with regular check ins; our feedback impacted patient care and workflow efficiency. Within a few months we had a hard fast change not only in culture, but also in the leadership--we all should have heeded this warning, when our amazing leader abruptly left the brand, after being a part of the company since it's inception. Suddenly, disgruntled client feedback regarding lack of availability, unmet promises by the brand, and appropriate medical advice that client's did not care for, etc turned into associates dropping like flies. Instead of the culture we were promised (putting associate care first), associates were being told they must work when ill, putting the brand before their well being. Associate feedback regarding consistent client concerns was ignored. Once associates became aware of this, turnover was rampant, and those left behind were expected to keep clientele happy on a skeleton crew. Our once extremely supportive brand, culture and leadership no longer had our backs during this challenging time. Mandatory schedule changes took place, workflows changed, teams were split up--all without feedback from associates. Once our team finally began to grow again via recruitment and false promises, the loyal associates who stuck around through the "dark time" were being terminated one by one, of course, after they trained -
Pros
Quality scrubs provided--although neccesity for virtual care team?
Cons
Show is run by mean girls club.

Good idea, bad reality
Director (Former Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - November 1, 2022
The idea for the company and business model is great, but the leadership struggles to make it happen. They say they care about employees, but their actions prove they care most about profitability. Employees are not valued for who they are and what they bring, but instead for how they can conform to the expectations of leadership that are not realistic or healthy. They struggle so much with keeping the clinics going in the present, that they pay no attention to the future. This creates a cycle of panic and frustration for all employees involved. Leadership doesn't take responsibility for their decisions and changes their minds about things on a weekly basis.
Pros
Friendly people, cute animals
Cons
Employees are not valued, medical benefits are weak, leadership doesn't know how to communicate or what they really want from the business.

Practice what you preach
Veterinary Technician (Former Employee) - Virtual - July 13, 2022
Coworkers were lovely but management fell short. Said mental health was important but felt the opposite. Great idea in theory but expanding too quickly and felt like the virtual team was getting the short end of the stick even though they are the "front line" when dealing with clients.

A company that calls themselves a CULT not CULTURE
Veterinary Technician (Former Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - June 18, 2022
The veterinary field should be about saving pet lives, not about your 5 star reviews. A toxic slow paced work environment where they practice and preach client experiences over patient care. If you want to build a resume of skill sets, this is not the place. Your skills will not improve but will either decrease or just plateau. You will only be practicing customer service. Want to feel like you are back in kindergarten? This is a place for you. They will give you a gold star sticker just to praise you for the small things you do. They will micromanage and even choose your career path for you. This company is clueless about the veterinary industry. And is trying to build this delusion. The management is clueless. They don't know what they are doing and what goes on. Company says they listen to their employees and make changes, but they just want you to believe in the MA cult not the veterinary culture. They really know how to preach and is just another corporate.

Smart (but human) people committed to improving the industry
Veterinarian (Current Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - June 16, 2022
I never thought I'd be excited to come to work again. I have worked in toxic cultures in veterinary medicine; it's not easy or uncomplicated to unravel the behaviors that are ingrained here but Modern Animal is doing it. Management "gets it" more than any other place I have worked, they are open to feedback and actually act on it, which is an incredibly refreshing change. Not everything is perfect and it never will be, but I finally feel like as a doctor, I'm working in a place that make changes that show that my well-being is a priority.
Pros
Support from a virtual team (including a doctor) that handles all communications, great culture, quiet/comfortable hospitals
Cons
Lots of software updates and changes that can disrupt the workflow

One of the best places to work!
Leader (Current Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - June 14, 2022
I have worked across many different businesses and this is by far the best place to be. Of course it's not perfect, but the company has the intent to create a rewarding place for its people. The clinics are set up beautifully - there are no phones - and the days are set up sustainably for the doctors and VAs and VNs.
Pros
no phones, career path for VAs and VNs, great doctor schedules, fair wages, great swag
Cons
medical record system is hard to use sometimes

Inclusive workplace that practices what it preaches
HR (Current Employee) - Culver City, CA - June 13, 2022
A lot of companies just slap up "values" on an HR page and that's the end of it. Modern Animal truly lives its values every single day. They listen to their employees and try to provide the best experience to everyone (employees and members alike). They honestly do care about us, listen to feedback, promote PTO, etc. Everyone I work with is intelligent, reasonable, and invested in the mission.
Pros
Intelligent, hardworking leadership, respectful and kind colleagues, flexible work schedule, promotes PTO
Cons
Some of the higher ups work 24/7, but not sure if that is because they personally struggle with work/life balance.

Just like any other Vet Hospital
Veterinary Assistant (Former Employee) - West Hollywood, CA - June 10, 2022
Don’t listen to their lies about revolutionizing the industry. This company is all about the clients and never their employees, just reread their mission statement. They are right they don’t do “squeeze ins” they “accommodate.” They pride themselves on mental health awareness, but will overwork you until you’re burned out. Never trust anyone from management. Their management is a complete joke and of course they’re all buddies. If you’re not a puppet, you’ll never move up in the company. People are leaving for a reason. MA is obsessed with selling the brand and leaves the medicine behind. If you love being in customer service and not wanting to actually practice medicine then this place is for you! Take it from someone who has been here since they opened. PEACE OUT.
Pros
They spend an endless amount of money to promote the MA brand, like rent out tattoo parlors, and make series about MA on YouTube.
Cons
Management is delusional

Modern Animal is a unicorn
Registered Veterinary Technician (Current Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - May 11, 2022
Modern Animal is a unicorn. I've never worked at a place that values their employees enough to actually listen to concerns and pivot the staffing and appointments flows. The benefits are exceptional and all RVTs in clinic start at or above $30.
Pros
Pay, benefits, core values, mission, work life balance
Cons
Frequent changes as the organization grows. It can be fast paced.

Progressive and thoughtful company with some growing pains
Veterinary Technician (Current Employee) - Studio City, CA - May 11, 2022
This company truly aims to correct an antiquated industry. Going through some growing pains, as to be expected when you're trying to do something that hasn't been done before. The people in clinics care immensely about their profession, patient care, and client experience. Excited to see where we land a year from now.

Poor management, no idea about the veterinary field, expanding too fast
Animal Caretaker (Former Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - April 22, 2022
Previously a great company to work for. Recent expansion and continued expansion plans chcnaged this. New management has no idea what most people actually do day to day, lazy people are prevalent and not corrected, while hard workers get dumped on. Trying to grow too fast with no plans to staff properly, at the cost of employees and clients. Trending all the way toward a corporate disaster.

Toxic Work Culture that Neglects Patient Care
Veterinary Technician (Former Employee) - West Hollywood, CA - November 3, 2021
Modern Animal have technicians who neglect their patients and have horrible customer service. There also seems to be a lack of diversity within the staff, especially doctors, who are all white.
Pros
None
Cons
Everything honestly
