NOV is a good place to break into the energy industry. The pay will not be as high as a lot of competitors but it is structures that way so that during downturns, (like we just had) they don't have to lay off as many workers which creates less churn in the work force.
My work was on call so slow during my time with the company due to the downturn so it would depend on your lifestyle as to whether this would be a fit for you. If you didn't have kids and had a spouse working, it's not too bad, if you are the sole provider, it can get tight during the downturns.
Benefits are pretty industry standard, the notable exception being the company truck provided to all service techs, that really helps.
Management was solid, always willing to assist and help at all times of day or night and really knew their stuff. Lots of veterans so it was a very great work environment, everyone spoke the same language and worked well together with few exceptions.
Work place culture is old school oil field, tough talk, tough work.
Company truck, not many layoffs during downturns.
