I'm scheduled to begin work as a sub paraprofessional.How long does it take to be hired as a permanent paraprofessional. Should i bring my resume to various schools?

Please be aware before you become a sub. These supervisors (principal) do not follow the Uft contract for permanent paraprofessional. They will have you do things that a 1:1 suppose to do. When you explain your self to your union rep at your school they turn a blind eye and become deaf to your concerns. It’s better to be a sub you change schools you don’t have to be in the same school dealing with all kind of nepotism dictatorship and acrimony from staff members. The recent raise is almost making as a permanent para. If you don’t have a degree your salary will plunge becoming permanent. I understand the benefit part. The salary para makes is low income. My advice stay a sub build your own 401 k health insurance. Do Lyft and Uber during the summer or work at a summer day camp. Or sub for the DOE during the summer. The choice is yours

Depends on you work ethic and if the principal likes your work ethic. Be on time , don't use your phone in the classroom , and most importantly, kids first. It take some longer than others but, hang in there it will happen.

My advice to any sub is this look at your credentials if you only have college credits or none stay as a sub you will make more than becoming permanent . If you do decide to become permanent take advantage of getting your degree for free while working as a sub or a permanent para. The DOE gives release time for those who are getting their bachelor degree for the first time. It’s all on how you play your cards right. This position does not pay much it’s best to either get a degree that high in demand or work another job to make ends meet.

Becoming permananet can happen for someone at there first school they sub in or it can take then several months may be years. It all depends the needs of the school, how consistent you are, and your performance. In New York the best district to get hired permananet fast is D75. Also the pay of course changes from a daily rate to a yearly salary. Depending your education level it can increase. So keep that in mind as well

They cut your pay IN HALF once you become permanent. Just be aware of that before you take the plunge. It is near impossible to live on a full time permanent para salary.

You have to sub at least 20-30 consecutive days in order to be considered for a permanent position. Also, do you best when assisting children and staff. i would carry my resume to each school.

It took 3 weeks because of the background check

You have sub a different schools and if they have availability and like your performance they will inquire and go through the steps to nominate you to their school. In addition, it's a great thing to travel with your resume electronically and in hand.
