Reviews about Pay & Benefits for Substitute Teacher in New York City Department of Education
Monotony
Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) - NYC - August 22, 2023
Gets old quickly, students have no respect and want the world handed to them without doing any work for the most part. I miss when children were raised to be responsible and accountable.

Great way to get your feet wet in teaching
Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) - Manhattan, NY - April 8, 2023
I am a substitute teacher for NYC DOE. Subbing is rewarding because it gives you opportunities to practice your classroom management skills without much planning or grading to do after school hours. SubCentral allows you to work at various schools across different grade levels, which helps you experience the diversity and disparity within urban education. You can sign up for any available jobs as much or as little as you want -- you make your own work schedule. Sometimes a school adminstration that is particularly impressed with your performance may contact you directly to offer you opportunities before they post them on SubCentral. However, be prepared that a school can file a complaint against you and make the DOE suspend you if you cancel a job on a short notice (on the same day). The suspension can last for weeks until you are invited to a meeting with an HR person at DOE, where they decide if you are going to be reinstated or terminated. I have learned my harsh lesson.
Pros
great way to involve in urban education without prior classroom teaching experience, flexiblity of schedule, mostly supportive and kind school teachers and administrations
Cons
no benefits for per diem employees, some school payroll secretaries do not submit your information on time for you to get paid on time
