Great compensation, terrible education, worse administration
Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (Current Employee) - Queens, NY - November 16, 2021
Don't believe the hype. You can make a decent living here, and get 100% paid for health benefits. The pros end there. No, FDNY is NOT the best trained. Not by a long shot. It's actually pretty pathetic how low the standards are here. Administration? Couldn't care less. Numbers numbers numbers. That's it.
Pros
Compensation, Job security
Cons
Everything else

Exciting work environment.
FDNY Fire Protection Inspector (Current Employee) - New York, NY - July 23, 2021
Professional and mostly pleasant work environment. Like most Civil Service occupations the work is mostly expected with little to no recognition of a job well done. Fair chances for advancement.
Pros
Excellent health benefits and pension.
Cons
Micromanagement and lack of work recognition.

New York's Best
Paramedic (Current Employee) - Queens, NY - June 16, 2021
If you took 50 FDNY EMS workers and asked them each if they liked their job, you'd get a 50/50 split. The pay is terrible compared to the super high cost of living and taxes. The benefits are great, but having to stay on for 25 years is asking a lot of people who run more then 1.5 million EMS calls in The City That Never Sleeps. I, however, have loved it for the last 16 years. I look forward to advancing into the nursing field after completing nursing school last year. I wouldn't have gotten where I am today if not for my experiences as an FDNY Paramedic. We see it all, we've done it all. There is a reason why we are called New York's Best and we prove it day after day. I've loved FDNY EMS and it will always have a place in my heart when I move on to greener pastures.
Pros
Job Security, Benefits, Camaraderie, Opportunities For Advancement, College Tuition Assistance
Cons
Salary vs. Cost Of Living, High Turnover Rate, Severe Micromanaging, Demanding Workload.

It varies from day to day. Some days it can be highly stressful and if you don't have an activity like going to the gym or something. You will burn out.

Fire Dispatcher
Fire Alarm Dispatcher (Former Employee) - Brooklyn, NY - May 23, 2019
The NYC Fire Department is a great place to work if you are a Firefighter. If you go to FDNY and go to a civilian position as a Fire Alarm Dispatcher be prepared that the instructors yell at you, they even tell you that they want to see fires. Who in their right mind wants to see people's properties burn up. I will tell anyone go see a psychiatrist if you want to be a FDNY Fire Alarm Dispatcher.
Pros
None
Cons
No meal breaks, Supervisors berate and belittle yoy

Fast paced, unpredictable, often exciting work environment.
Emergency Radio Dispatcher (Current Employee) - 11 Metrotech Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 - March 9, 2019
Working for the FDNY is an interesting experience. Though your work uniform may be the same, each day on the job is anything but. From fires, bombings, car accidents to bariatric, geriatric and pediatric injuries/infections, the FDNY as well as the City of New York is always interesting.
Pros
Saving the citizens of New York City from a variety of emergency medical issues

Working for the fire department is a good opportunity to help the public. I really enjoyed what I do. However having a family takes a toll on you, especially working long hours with kids under the age of 5. I'm just looking for a job where I can help people and spend quality time with my family.
