Exciting work environment.
FDNY Fire Protection Inspector (Current Employee) - New York, NY - July 23, 2021
Professional and mostly pleasant work environment. Like most Civil Service occupations the work is mostly expected with little to no recognition of a job well done. Fair chances for advancement.
Pros
Excellent health benefits and pension.
Cons
Micromanagement and lack of work recognition.

Fire Dispatcher
Fire Alarm Dispatcher (Former Employee) - Brooklyn, NY - May 23, 2019
The NYC Fire Department is a great place to work if you are a Firefighter. If you go to FDNY and go to a civilian position as a Fire Alarm Dispatcher be prepared that the instructors yell at you, they even tell you that they want to see fires. Who in their right mind wants to see people's properties burn up. I will tell anyone go see a psychiatrist if you want to be a FDNY Fire Alarm Dispatcher.
Pros
None
Cons
No meal breaks, Supervisors berate and belittle yoy

Wamt to spend more quality time with my husband and kids
Fire Alarm Dispatcher (Current Employee) - New York, NY - July 23, 2018
Working for the fire department is a good opportunity to help the public. I really enjoyed what I do. However having a family takes a toll on you, especially working long hours with kids under the age of 5. I'm just looking for a job where I can help people and spend quality time with my family.
Pros
Able to make good money
Cons
Long hours

The job is very intense
Fire Alarm Dispatcher (Current Employee) - New York, NY - January 9, 2018
I have no real comment about the fire department. The job overall was wonderful. The people and management however is a different story. There is a lot of cut throat activity that goes on.
Pros
Money
Cons
No empathy, no compassion, no team work

The chalenge of enforcement
Fire Protection Inspector (Current Employee) - New York, NY - December 18, 2014
A typical day starts with the workload, which tells me what direction I'm to head in. There are slow days when nothing happens but when it does its challenging.
Pros
Driving doing surveilance
Cons
When you can't do anything about a given situation.
