IT Operations Administrator (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CAJanuary 2, 2018
The culture has changed; however, it is still a good company to work for. They provide fare compensations and take into consideration the changing times.
Pros
Keeps up with the changing times (example: technology)

Once an honest company
Claim Representative (Former Employee) –  PennsylvaniaSeptember 18, 2017
They went into a mutual company and destroyed the company. The kept downsizing and getting rid of talented people. Hurt many people. Told you as the walked you out the door they would hire you back if an opportunity came about. Lies lies and more lies. Destroyed peoples lives
Pros
At one time a good company and now i would not be surprised if they were sold.
Cons
Brought in a head chopper and got rid of good people

Norcal
Office Coordinator (Former Employee) –  Austin, TXSeptember 18, 2017
It's a pretty relaxed office environment. There are plenty of opportunities for advancement and competitive pay if you start as an associate underwriter with no experience. They will train and you can create a career at this company.

Used to be a great Company, NOT anymore
Claims Specialist (Former Employee) –  CAMarch 21, 2017
The good old NORCAL is long gone. The subsidiary company is slowly becoming the home office which was a failing company due to poor leadership. Now that leadership along with VP of claims dept. is running the entire company into the ground. "Think Customers First" used to be the motto. Now they only care about growth and more sales with no future plan on how to handle the growth. How does one become "top tier" company whilst providing terrible service to its policyholders?
Pros
The flexible work hours and ability to telecommute. Most of the people are great.
Cons
Senior management (including VPs) is terrible, doesn't listen employees, stifle productive ideas that would make business run much more efficient, constant reorganization meaning constant layoffs.

Company is going through a lot of changes while expanding nationally
Network Systems Manager (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CaliforniaMay 5, 2016
It was the best company I've ever worked for when I started over 8 years ago.

The medical malpractice insurance industry is going through a major change with doctors moving to self-insured groups like Kaiser. This is forcing small companies such as NORCAL Mutual Insurance Company to adapt by acquisitions and consolidation.

NORCAL Mutual Insurance Company has acquired 2 other insurance companies in Austin (Texas) and Jacksonville (Florida) where the cost of doing business is so much cheaper than the current home office in San Francisco.

As a result, staff in San Francisco has been reduced significantly and continues to be reduced. The Computer Center is in the process of being relocated from San Francisco to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

NORCAL Mutual Insurance Company is becoming a shadow of its former self. Last year was the first year that dividends were not paid to its insureds. Expense reduction is a major initiative in the company to combat rising claims from the business from its acquisitions.
