For profit disguised as a nonprofit

A typical day at work is highly stressful and micromanaged as you are constantly trying to meet deadlines as well as serving a high amount of customers due to doctors and admins double, triple, and sometimes quadruple book patients in order to meet organizational goals or in other words their quota to be able to qualify for their bonus. This causes the patients to not have enough time per visit and long wait times even if you check in early. This in turn causes the patients to take it out on staff and we are highly discouraged from submitting incident reports without approval from the supervisor first. During the pandemic the admin in charge of incident reports was let go, so I'm not totally sure where incident reports of mistreatment from customers against staff go now. Most people that I've worked with are very pleasant, but sometimes even the nicest people are pushed to the limit due to the stress. Going back to organizational goals. It is not service driven. It is number driven and if goals are not met. The organization as a whole gets punished through not receiving their end of year bonus check which in turn affects those who earn less. This is a big deal because I've talked to many staff members whom have to work an outside job on top of their current job in order to be able to earn enough to maintain their families. Keep in mind this is separate from the bonus executives and doctors do end up getting for "achieving" their goals.

Pros

Friendly and helpful staff.

Cons

Numbers driven rather than service driven

Questionable

Admirable mission. Friendly colleagues.Pulled in impossible directions. 8-12 clients a day with an 8 hour work day schedule with no admin time and being on-call at the whims of doctors for warm hand-offs. No work from home flexibility offered during COVID-19 except for some. Favouritism clearly present.

Pros

Healthcare plan

Cons

Inflexibility, Favoritism, Unreasonable Expectations

Horrible place to work at

The first thing they did in pandemic was to lay off healthcare workers and cut off their medical insurance. Who would have thought a healthcare company doesn't even care about their staffs' health? (RED FLAG). I had to find out that I was furloughed from a colleague instead of my supervisor. My supervisor, the executives, or the HR team did not give us any plan on how to bring staffs back. They didn't care to keep you waiting or keep you in the dark. (POOR COMMUNICATION). Your supervisor will not care about your well being, either. The company only cares about how much money you can make for them. The supervisors only care about how much you will make him/her look good in front of other executives. Your supervisor will volunteer you for things that is not even in the job description to begin with. Your coworkers wouldn't care much about you either as long as you are the one dealing with difficult patients. Some coworkers would worry that you take the easy encounters and some coworkers want you to be around just so they can take vacations and have you clean their mess. Your supervisor would count how many times you go to bathroom in a day or micromanage you, and your colleagues would not hesitate to throw you under the bus when it's beneficial to them. (TOXIC CULTURE). To be honest, the medical/dental insurance or 401k they offer in the hiring package are not even worthy since the annual base is super low to begin with compared to other hospitals and clinics. (CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP). Save yourself from the headache.

Pros

None

Cons

micromanager, poor communication, low base

Clinic physicians and support staff truly dedicated to patients’ wellbeing

The company is able to assure patients of access to care. Nursing staff and physicians work closely to take care of patients. The physician and admin leaders are exemplary! Staff are truly competent. The facility is very clean and physical distancing and masking are strictly enforced such that patients would not be afraid of contracting infection there. It could be problematic during times of lack of nursing / clinical support staff. Also, sick leave needs to be clarified as a separate benefit.

Extra stressful since covid19, chinese culture

Helping the underserved population is very rewarding. Nice and hard-working colleagues. 401K with 8% match. 5 CME days. Generous PTO the longer your work. Nice Christmas parties. Free parking available for physicians. Great Kaiser healthplan to you and the family though this may change. Chinese New Year off. Med school loan repayment available. Many lunch meetings that are unpaid unless you count the $10 lunch provided for you. Dental insurance is not the best. CME allowance cannot be spent on medical equipment. You have to pay $100 annually from your already meager CME allowance to have Up-to-date access. Paying for your boards and board maintenance fees also comes from CME allowance. Sick days come from your PTO. You must see a patient if they arrive within 30 minutes after their appointment time which can put you very behind. Rotating on-call schedule. In-person visits are only 15 minutes. You get 30 minutes if it’s a PE for age 55 and older. Consider yourself lucky if your 1PM patient after lunch is roomed by 1:20PM, even if it sets you behind. You may be forced to do night clinic or forced to work a time slot you don't want to do. You may also be forced to work at another site even if you were planning to work at another site. It is very unfortunate to often see the young providers leaving.NEMS had humble beginnings that focused on good healthcare. In the past decade, they seem to prioritize obtaining more real estate. They even have properties that they rent out to other businesses despite being a nonprofit organization. Patients are scheduled to see patients for -

decent entry level job but involves a lot drama

Typical day at work consist of contacting members for appointment scheduling and completing other front desk administrative work. You will spend a lot of time picking up calls from members and checking members in for their appointments. It is decent for beginners to learn the basics on medical admin but the culture is horrible. Employees have too much drama causing unprofessionalism all around. Management is not very supportive of creating a welcoming culture but instead favorites a handful of employees.

Pros

medical benefits

Cons

lack of professionalism

Poor management

During extraordinary times such as Shelter in Place due to COVID-19, Directors and Managers don’t value their staff’s well bing, work and contribution. They did not create opportunities for staff to modify their work schedule, especially when some of them are living with high need and/or young children that need supervision at home.

terrible place

Terrible working experience- no time for lunch, stay late for 1-2 hr each day. Providers are treated badly at this place. They use all kinds of excuses trying not to reimburse your expense on DEA/CME/licensing . Your hard work was not appreciated. Providers do not even have a way to make a voice. All kinds of issues... providers are constantly leaving.

Good place to learn of you can stand the isolation.

This place is overwhelmingly Chinese, that includes staff and patients. There are Latino and Filipino patients, however, there are no other Latino or Filipino Medical Assistants. You are isolated if you don't speak Mandarin or Cantonese. No one makes you feel included. Not the supervisor, not the manager, not the director of doctors.

Ok company to start

Heavy Asian-Chinese culture, communication can be improved, lots of gossiping, better stay away from those dramas. Working environment could get very toxic and stressful. Pretty sure not all locations are like this but beware.

Administration

Upper management expects you to read their minds and be comfortable with the job pretty much immediately. Weekly check-ins with your supervisor will comprise of telling you a list of things that you have done wrong and that "we will eventually move over to JS so we need to be sure that you are comfortable". Supervisor asks coworkers to pretty much spy on you and report all your mistakes within the week.

Pros

good benefits and paid time off

Cons

passive aggressive co-workers

Fair

With lots of complaints not being heard, little recognition at departmental level, and ineffectiveness of the staff engagement task-force, this marks a lower score. Staffs at different departments are friendly but the when it comes to work, not everyone from all departments is willing to shoulder the responsibility and mutually share the organization goal to create a better working environment. NEMS is trying to maintain its leading position as a healthcare center in the community. Therefore, different levels of transformations have been implemented in order to bring about a better healthcare service/facility to the public. But many newly implemented policies are too quickly pushed to start without thorough considerations and communication to all levels of staffs, resulting lots of miscommunication, misunderstanding and extra work to staffs. With such a working environment which lacking inter-departmental communications, it discourages me to recommend friends/relatives to work at NEMS.

Pros

health benefit

Cons

low salary

Working environment was stressful and toxic

I was working at the clinic as a front desk assistant located in 1870 Lundy Ave, San Jose a year ago. After a day of intensive training, the term leader expected me to remember everything she explained to me by words and on papers. At times, she's very rude when I cound not remember certain details or did not answer her questions correctly. I was in constant obervation, and if I did one mistake then I would be criticized immedidately. The way she supervised me had really made the whole environment very unpleasant. It wasn't a good experience for me to be working at the NEMS in the San Jose location.

Pros

Good working hours from 8:30am to 5:00pm

Cons

Poor management and customer service
