Fun place to work but no life balance

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
I enjoyed my time at Oakland Hills. Fantastic facility and staff. The drawback is you have zero time for life. Most shifts were 5am till sunset, often times 7 days a week. It got too grueling for me

Get it in writing

Be careful when you get a job here to be sure of your position. They hire 'extras' without explanation and basically you are seasonal so you are not incurring any benefits or anything. Its a lot of downtime, and it is very hard to make decent money as you have to make in from extra tips which are only given to those who know the members for years.

Lack of Respect

Although, I had a wonderful manager working in the snack bar, the rest of the management was a joke. You are not going to get as many tips as you think, and the members are just disrespectful. Often walking behind counters and the BOH to pour their own drinks or yell at you for their food order not being up to their standards. Disrespectful, Drunk privileged men. Working conditions were horrific. Because of the use of grease, cooks were required to wear long sleeve uniforms, in kitchens with no A/C or proper ventilation in 90 degree weather. And the “free lunch/dinner” they provide you is just leftovers from the wedding the night before. Good luck to the next people that work here.

This place sucked

This place sucked. Maybe a decent experience for someone fresh out of culinary school who’s just getting there feet wet. If you’re a seasoned vet this place has absolutely nothing to offer you but a ruined summer of your life.

Need change now

All good things come to an end.So many good employees now gone. Most of them, left by choice and while the trouble still remains. It’s insane to see how a HR department and a Club House Manager and tear a place down limb by limb. This place needs to be reshaped from the inside out and be brought back to life, beginning with those two “managers”.

Great members, most treat you like a person

Prestige place to work.

Fun place to work. Friendly environment. Good people to work with. Fast pace of work in summer, sometimes long hours. Good relationship with members and management. Hard to get vacation in summer.

benefits, free uniform

The Members Make the Job Rewarding

Oakland Hills Country Club is a fun place to work. The employees are expected to be at the top of their game to get the job done “the Oakland Hills way” yet the job is enjoyable and there is great workplace camaraderie. I recommend this place to job seekers. The members are friendly and the facilities are top notch. At Oakland Hills there is “a place for everyone, and everyone in their place.”

Free food

Management can be indifferent

Chaos, terrible management

They do not train you here. This will come as no surprise because you will find that the senior managers in F&B are not qualified to do their jobs. The food is horrible. The members are upset because of the terrible food and high turnover of staff.I have never worked at a place where HR was so involved in day to day operations of the F&B department...especially with knowing so little about it.If you bring up any issues you are immediately marked as “negative” and are moved out faster then you were hired in. Basically, as soon as you figure out the bogus operation they are running they get rid of you. They do this while blaming everything on the pandemic.Oakland Hills should have been able to weather the pandemic no problem, but unfortunately under the direction of HR they used it as a way to get rid of people they didn’t like and are now paying the price.

Hard to think of any...

Management, long hours

Horrible Experience

The hours are very long. You will put a lot more into it then you will ever get out of it. Even though you accumulate PTO you are never able to take time off.The club once valued loyalty and longevity from the staff. That is no longer the case. The kitchen is very difficult to work with, especially the Chef. They lack experience and knowledge to know what quality even is or what the standard should be at a place like Oakland Hills. The food is not good and has become a major complaint. The Clubhouse Manager has been there too long and keeps the club very stagnant...also somewhat of a shady character. The new HR manager has been a major contributor in the negative atmosphere that has been created. If you are interested in working here, I would stick to the golf side of things and stay away from F&B!

Management, Hr

decent benefits, horrible management

You will work a lot of hours in the summer, since it is a golf club. When you interview, they tell you that you will receive training, which is NOT true. They basically just throw you into the position. The management is at odds with each other all the time. No one is ever on the same page. You can ask the same question to 3 managers and get 3 different answers. The kitchen is really hard to work with, they are all prima donnas, especially the chef. Has to be one of the worst experiences I have ever had. The positive reviews here sound like they came straight from their HR department. Don't fall for it.

benefits, free food.

poor management, negative atmosphere

The people! The Members and Staff are salt of the earth, wonderful people!

It makes life so much better when you like the people you work with and for. These people fill my heart every day. The new GM is making a positive, upbeat work culture where everyone is respected, and drama and negativity aren't tolerated. The salary is very good and the benefits are very generous and affordable. Sometimes direction from management could be a bit clearer, but they try hard to get it right. Best part of the job is the people, the beautiful environment, the benefits and salary, and the pride in working for such a prestigious Country Club.

free lunches, free uniforms, great benefits, good salary, great environment, The people!

sometimes direction isn't clear from management, but they are trying!

Constantly being yelled at during service even if your doing your job well no one helps if your in the weeds if you're a team player its not fair if the rest of the team isn't the head chef doesn't keep his word string you along then tells you your not worth it.

Horrible work hours

Interesting place

OHCC’s caddie program is a well paying job, but it is extremely disorganized. There is no sign in system or anything similar. Meaning, if you show up to caddie, you have to be extremely lucky to get out. There were multiple times where I have been the 1st caddie to show up on the grounds, arriving at 6:00 am. 7 hours later, I am still sitting in he caddie waiting area, while many other caddies who have arrived much later before I did have gone out and did at least 1 round before I did. It is unfair and frustrating. Good pay, but the organization could be so much better.

Busy and fun work environment.

Great place to work! Coworkers are great and management is helpful. You will be on your feet most of your shift. I have learned a great deal about wine and fine dining.

Very prestigious and formal place

This is and excellent company to work for. They normally require experience but, once you get your feet in the door, it is an excellent job to have. Bartenders, servers, and server assistants work as a team to service membership and banquet parties.

Many different opportunities to find your place on the team differing levels of opportunity as well from banquets to ala carte and short order on the culinary team

Oakland Hills

Working here helped me develop a high paste mentality. It was non stop and there was always something to do and that gave me a better understanding for work life.

Great place to work

Very fast pace. Can be a little bit stressful when big events come around. Very pleasant place to work. They offer employee meals for lunch. You work with great chefs who push you to become better at what you do.

Good Summer Job for Students

In this job, you more or less choose your own hours. Most work is not scheduled in advance, so caddies may show up to work at any time, with the downside being that you may have to wait for work. Compensation is mostly tip-based, so day to day earnings will vary.
