Great place for a public service career

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Great people and lots to do. Many opportunities to advance if you have useful skills and you're willing to work hard & contribute. Stuff doesn't work as well as it should, but not much different from most government agencies in that regard, and people are in there every day trying to make it work better.

People are nice, coworkers.

They are only interested in numbers rather than customer service. They would rather have customers have to call back every day, week, month instead of giving “us” the time needed to resolve their issues in full, do our “check backs”. They don't care if it takes 20 different people to work with a claimant and their problem is still not resolved... instead of letting one person stay in touch with them (claimant ) and work out their issues. They are not customer service oriented. Only numbers count to them.

A great job with lost of growth opportunities

There is a lot of information that is constantly changing and new programs to learn at the same time they are being rolled out in response to the pandemic. Must be able to work independently and their is a lot of self learning involved. Every manager I have had is very supportive and communicative on how you are performing and genuinely want you to succeed.

Pros

Every day you work is a day you are helping someone in our community get paid

Cons

The moment you get trained on something, the instructions will change so you have to be on your game all day, every day which some people have had a difficult time doing.

Easy job

Outdated systems and at times given conflicting directions from various higher-ups, but the people are genuinely pleasant and the work is easy once you get into a rhythm.

Pros

Tremendous benefits and generous time off

Cons

Outdated technology and inefficiency

Poor training

The training is the worst I’ve ever seen at a job. They do not fully train you before you do the job and the unemployed suffer as you figure it out. The managers are the worst. They do not give the feed back you need and will fire you after telling you that you have been doing great at your job

Pros

Decent pay

Cons

Poor management, poor training, lack of job security

I enjoy being able to help people.

It’s a difficult job and often quite thankless… But it’s the people who are so grateful for your assistance that make it all worth it and those are the people that keep me coming back every day.

Pros

Being able to take time off for dr appts. Paid holidays and vacation. PTO, sick time.

Cons

There is a lot thrown at you to learn and remember in a short amount of time, The constant worry of not being able to keep up with their production expectations, Being hired as limited duration and not knowing if you will be kept on after that.

Everything is exceptional except for the internet and technology needs to be improved.

Ok except for internet and technology. Everyone is helpful and pleasant. Supervisors are terrific. Good work environment overall. The state of Oregon really needs to make changes in the way their technology is delivered by internet.

Work with a purpose

Working for the Oregon Employment Department has been fulfilling and educational, both of which are high on my list of priorities. Ongoing training is provided to set employees up for success; the management team seems highly motivated to support the team; and coworkers are respectful of one another.

Pros

The State offers excellent benefits

Cons

Commute

Toxic environment

Bad management decisions, toxic environments, and constant miscommunications. A poorly run organization that reflects all of the most negative of government bureaucracy stereotypes.

Enjoyed helping people with their unemployment claims

The most enjoyable part of the job was processing unemployment claims through automated entry on telephone and on-line applications. Conversed with each claimant to provide information and options to process their claims accurately and resolve issues. Organized work load to meet claimant's needs. Resolved issues and followed up on claims needing further attention.

Pros

Very organized workplace

Cons

Strict work schedule with breaks and lunches at specific time. Not much flexibility
