Reading the reviews on here really had me worried when I first started. I am glad I did. The company is the best I've ever worked for. Great perks and people are great to work with.

Sales (Former Employee) –  Woodstock, ILOctober 30, 2018
Other World Computing is not a nice place to work. The HR manager seems to enjoy firing people. But, if you are in her inner circle and hang out with her on the weekends your job is protected. They hang on to the people who do the bare minimum to get by, or who whine when things don't go their way. The people who work very hard at their jobs and want to make positive changes for the company are under appreciated and let go within a year of employment. The owner of the company does mean well, but unfortunately tends to get rid of too many positive people. The products are good, the customers were enjoyable.

Musician (Former Employee) –  Toronto, OHAugust 1, 2018
It's very important for me to work in this field, and progress in this direction (music and painting) is one of my most important tasks. I need to work hard in these fields.

Don't Believe Everything You Read!!!
Manager (Current Employee) –  Woodstock, ILApril 15, 2018
OWC is a small private family owned company. Being a small company there are some nice perks.
This is a small but fast-growing company. If you show a good work ethic and keep a positive attitude, you can go far in a relatively short period of time. I work with people who started on the phones maybe three to five years ago, who are now managers (actual managers - they have budgets to manage, plans to execute, and employees accountable to them). How many companies can say that's true for their newer people?
This "people ethic", above all other qualities, is what makes OWC a good place to work. It's a lot easier to get out of bed in the morning if you don't have to sit next to someone you know will frequently make your life more difficult instead of easier.
Everyone wants a chance to move up if they do good work, and everyone wants to be treated with respect. Assuming you work hard and treat others well, these are two things you're likely to be rewarded with at OWC.
Every company has their issues, NONE are a perfect fit for everyone.
Pros
This is a great company to work for!
Cons
This is really not applicable!

A Great Place To Work
Customer Service Representative (Current Employee) –  Woodstock, ILApril 11, 2018
OWC is a great place to work! I have been with the company for a few years now and I still think that it is a good company. The company has it's challenges as do any company but they continue to move forward. The company operates as a collaborative team and welcomes suggestions from the employees. OWC offers decent benefits and they take an interest in their employees and their well being.
Pros
Family atmosphere, Decent pay, Decent benefits

There is no success here, only despair and stress.
Engineer (Current Employee) –  Woodstock, ILMarch 19, 2018
CEO is a micromanager the worst I've never seen.

Leadership turnover is astounding. In my time at OWC I've seen 7 director level employees quit or be fired.

Toxic culture based on fear and gossip.
Pros
decent pay, 401K
Cons
micromanager toxic culture poor products

Associate General Counsel (Former Employee) –  Woodstock, ILFebruary 7, 2018
I was paid $30 an hour as an attorney. I was told we would revisit the salary after my initial "contract" trial period. No such luck. The general counsel practiced law by googling everything. She had no actual experience and very little common sense. They have since fired her. The patents and copyrights that she was supposed to renew were regularly expiring. She had no sense of due dates.
Pros
none
Cons
everything, especially OSHA violations

Good people but horrid management
Marketing Manager (Former Employee) –  Austin, TXMay 10, 2017
I generally enjoyed working with colleagues at OWC but found the senior management to be awful. Not able to produce a business plan or budget, always shifting direction. Totally opportunistic. The CEO is the founder of the business, some 28 years ago, and continues to run the business like a startup. Leaves a lot to be desired.
Pros
Relatively good benefits, most of the staff want to do the right things for the business to be successful.
Cons
Interference and poor management from the CEO.

Don't work at Austin office
Marketing (Former Employee) –  Austin, TXApril 22, 2015
OWC has been in business for 25+ years selling Apple enhancements and accessories. The headquarters is in Woodstock, IL.

Unfortunately, the work environment at the Austin office is often tense, sometimes hostile. They say they're open to change but they continue to do things the way they've always done them. The bureaucracy is very rigid and turnover is high. Average pay, skimpy vacation time, no equity.

With so many progressive high tech companies in Austin, keep looking.
Pros
Great location on Lady Bird Lake
Cons
High turnover, rigid bureaucracy, no equity

Great For Income, Terrible For Anything Else
Suport (Former Employee) –  Woodstock, ILSeptember 28, 2014
The bad far outweighs the good here. You'll make solid money in terms of salary and bonuses. 401K is very good too. But the health insurance costs are over $800/mo.

The work load expectations in every department are unrealistic...that's why no one has time to talk, interact, or even smile.

Everyone, including HR, kowtows to the egotistical "founder and CEO" who has a sign for his parking spot in Woodstock yet works from Texas. He doesn't spend any time getting to know any direct or indirect employees on any kind of personal level. To him, people are just "resources" to be used up in his pursuit of ever higher sales. That's why there's been a revolving door of management level and support people here...they either resign or are let go once they are burnt out.

The hardest part of this job is balancing your personal desires to work for a meaningful place where people are decent to a place where you trade all that for great pay.

Maybe go in with mindset of 1-2 year max and you'll be OK. You'll learn then what you really want out of the workplace and can take lessons learned here and apply to new setting to make it a better place for those you work with.
Pros
Good salary

Healthcare costs, long hours, low morale, meddling CEO, weak managers

Customer Support Representative (Former Employee) –  Woodstock, ILOctober 7, 2013
Other World Computing is an outstanding company with some of the best minds in the third party reseller industry for Apple computer products. The owner is enviromentally conscience, highly knowlegeable in the Apple industry, and devoted to making the company a place of professional growth for his employees.

Graphics Manager/Web Designer (Former Employee) –  Woodstock, ILMarch 16, 2012
Other World Computing is a great place to "get your feet wet" in a high-energy work environment. Sales, Web Design and Product Development do some great work.
This is very much a single-owner business with multiple units that are supporting each others efforts, so the graphics and web design work was very challenging.
Their flagship products and support are the often the best in their niche markets and their retail success is reflective of their product development groups talents and the unique focus of their president. They are heavily dependent on their OEM suppliers for new products, but their product and support teams serve up great stuff to their customers.
Unfortunately, the stress of a high-growth mentality and a generally disconnected and erratic management style make it a workplace with poor morale and little stability. An inordinate amount of value is placed on highest value work for lowest cost.
Pros
wide variety of opportunities, great products, woodstock is a nice town : )
Cons
erratic management, low morale, lack of vision
