I have been told they check credit of applicants and that influences decision to hire. Is this true?

Yes it is true however, they are not the only financial institution that pulls credit checks upon hiring.

Yep. You have to have a good credit score above a certain threshold. I think the reasoning is that people with poor financial habits may be more inclined to engage in fraudulent activity (at least from the company perspective.)

Yes the pull credit, a soft pull though. But they will make exceptions for collection accounts. I had one and I've had coworkers who have as well.

Yes. A credit report is pulled, you may not have any negative items on your report to be employed with PenFed.
