Do not work here
Assistant Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Kent, WAJanuary 27, 2019
You are provided with lots of vendor trainings on the food in the stores. This is only so you can drive sales though, they don't care what you actually learn as long as you drive sales. You do get a 20-30% discount on all of their overpriced products. As far as retail goes, a pet store does provide you with the best customer base as they are usually pretty laid back and lots will bring their pet in with them. The pay is awful for everything they expect you to do. The staff in all the stores is very small so it is not easy to request days off or call in sick- management will make you call everyone to find your replacement shift. You will never have a consistent schedule, holidays off, or weekends off.
Pros
Lots of vendor trainings, discounts, customer base is great, lots of dog visitors
Cons
Pay is not good for everything expected of you, small staff, unreliable schedule, drama

They have a family culture in each store to help provide the best customer service for the needs of animals. They don't just sell dog food, they educate the consumer on the best possible solution for their pets health needs.

Upper Management isnt great.
Retail Sales Associate (Former Employee) –  Tacoma, WAAugust 6, 2018
Not much room for growth. Pay is below standards for the amount of work they continue to give. Never enough staffing and constant turn over.
Coworkers are great!

Run the other way. This is the worst management ever. No care or concern for the employees at Pet Pros. This company will take full advantage of you in any way they can. Hostile working environment. They bully employees to work off the clock.

Helping people help their pets
Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Seattle, WADecember 10, 2017
Favorite job I've ever had.

First, the bad: retail pet food has very tight margins, and not a lot of volume, so it's not a lucrative field by any stretch of the imagination.

The good: If you truly love animals, it's absolutely worth it. The company really cares about their employees and does everything it can in terms of salary and benefits. The work can be very rewarding, and you build great relationships with your customers. You get to meet dogs and puppies on a regular basis. The company is still relatively small, and family run, but has been around for many years.
Pros
Puppies!
Cons
Retail pay (low)

Pros
Free dog food to try out and a increase in pet knowledge a care.
Cons

Work load does not match the pay.
Retail Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Lakeland, WAMay 23, 2017
My supervisor at Pet Pros was incredible. He was very good at helping the managers go through all the changes. The changes happened so often that corporate did not always filter the information out to the managers in a timely fashion. The overall environment was changing so much that it was hard to keep up with them. The pay did not match the work load. They had us doing everything from cleaning the bathrooms to trying to figure out our own IT issues. The corporate office is going from one manager in each store to one manager for two stores and the assistant managers are running the stores just to keep costs down. There is little to no support from the corporate office. I think that the owner of the company would be sad to know that his dream of being a specialty, customers service based company is being turned into a Petco. The new policies that are being put into place are for profit not the employees.
Pros
Vendor Trainings, great DM
Cons
Inconstant policies, no loyalty from employer to personnel.

Terrible company
Shift Lead (Former Employee) –  RentonMarch 3, 2017
I was with this company for 4 years, and I was happy to finally be out of there. Its a joke of a company, they claim to be a neighborhood type store but they run like a franchise. Communication at all levels if this company is terrible. Pay isn't worth all the hassles that done with the job. Maternity leave you have to use all your sick time and vacation time. You never have a set schedule. Hours vary. Good luck with requesting time off. All around they treat their employees very poorly! I don't recommend working there if your looking for long term job or career.

District Manager (Former Employee) –  Woodinville, WAAugust 15, 2016
Left due to maternity leave and retail not being a good work life balance career. The company was very small when I started and had grown significantly when I left after 3 years.

You Are Replacable
CSR (Current Employee) –  OregonAugust 4, 2016
This company has little to no regard for it's employees or even it's customers, enacting all sorts of policies that are about the dollar, not the integrity of the Company or it's future. Buyer beware.
Pros
20-40% discounts, Use of Frequent Buyer programs, Training and sampling some of their products for your pets, Closed Thanksgiving/Christmas
Cons
Management is overworked, Poor communication from Corp, HR is in the pocket of the OM - you cannot trust her, Corporate micromanages everything, Pay for Managers is deplorable, No room for growth, DMs are hand-picked by Corp

Awful Company!!!
CSR (Current Employee) –  Seattle, WAMarch 15, 2016
If I could leave less then one star I would. I'm amazed this company stays in business! Management is awful. Employees are treated very poorly. They expect champagne service at Key Stone Light prices. They pay there employees as little as possible with limited raises by design. The folks up at corporate regularly give the impression, "that it's all about the money". It's true there is training. However, it comes from outside vendor reps. Not so much from the company itself. Pet pros management is clueless to the attitude or the culture of there stores. Very little respect for the hourly employees. They work their employees physically hard and demand that employees become "experts" in the industry. Lots of burn out, lots of turn over, hit and miss store managers, micromanagement to the stores at the corporate level. This company does everything it can not to pay their people. Hourly employees may have to every holiday except, Christmas day. Thanksgiving day. Although the corporate folks, get all the other major holidays off. You can find yourself scheduled at another store with no warning. This place is good for people looking for there first job. Or people who don't need to make a living. But, I wouldn't recommend it.
Pros
Cool customers lots of animals
Cons
Terrible management, Poor benefits, Low wages, Physical work, rigid schedules, incompetent store leaders.

Great place for customers...
Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) –  MultipleJuly 16, 2015
Pet Pros carries a lot of great products and they provide their employees with a lot of product trainings. They are pretty rigid with their scheduling and are not very courteous nor respectful of time off. If you don't have other things that require your time and it doesn't matter when you work, it might work out for you. The workload is pretty demanding given there are so few employees. The small number employees makes it hard to take time off without imposing on co-workers. There is a lot of physical work; be prepared to lift and move large bags of dog food often. I rather enjoyed freight days. They like to promote from within the company. However, management is not always worthy of their positions. Drama and gossip all over the place. Not enough pay. The customers really make the job worth it. They appreciate your time and help. It's really rewarding to work with most of the customers and their pets. Hard work is not always recognized or rewarded.
Pros
Excellent discounts, lots of training of products, don't sell pets, community involvement
Cons
No respect for time off, drama, raise/review process is terrible, not enough employees

Great Job
Customer Service Representative (Current Employee) –  WashingtonJune 24, 2014
Really great job overall. But I have noticed that pay is not based on performance, nor are your performance reviews. If you work very hard here there is not necessarily going to be a reward. But they do give raises periodically and promote from within if possible.

Horrible place to work they have had over 5 managers that have been fired in the past year. They also have had numerous assistant managers shift lead and Customer services reps as well. If you are looking for something short term apply otherwise I would look on.
