PETCO Animal Supplies is a holding company for PETCO Animal Supplies Stores, the second-largest US retailer of specialty pet supplies (behind PetSmart). The company boasts about 1,150 stores in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, making it the only pet store to cover the entire US market. The chain sells more than 10,000 pet-related products for dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, birds, and other small animals. PETCO Animal Supplies holding company was formed to create a foundation for the firm's upcoming growth strategies. Founded in 1965, PETCO Animal Supplies is owned by Texas Pacific Groupand Leonard Green & Partners, which took it private in a deal worth $1.8 billion.
The company is barking up the tree of main rival PetSmart. To that end, in June 2011 PETCO acquired the Complete Petmart chain of 29 stores in Ohio, northern Kentucky, North Carolina, and West Virginia. Previously, it bought four Superpetz pet store locations in South Carolina, Maryland, and Pennsylvania from grocery chain Weis Markets in 2010. In addition to its superstores, PETCO operates more than 30 smaller format shops, designed for neighborhoods, called Unleashed by Petco (launched in 2009).
Beyond pet supplies, PETCO stores offer services including dog training, grooming, vaccinations, pet photography, insurance and online pet first aid. – less
