Petco was a great job. The pay was right for the work I was doing and the people were great. The only problem was the customers and hours. The days were long and it was very slow paced but that wasn’t a big issue.

A lot of favoritism, but if you like animals it can get you through the days. Upper management doesn’t support their employees in dramatic situations (with customers or employees). My advice is to handle everything yourself and keep to yourself if you can. Pay isn’t great for the amount of work you do. Hourly pay for managerial work is laughable, unless you’ve been hired from outside. Internal raises, including promotions to higher level positions, are very small.

I was primarily a cashier but also cleaned the animal cages and helped around the store, and it was an absolute blast seeing all the different animals and pet parents. The pay was average for retail, which makes it rather low in the scheme of things so I had to leave.

Petco is all about inclusivity. If I or anyone I've ever worked with was provided adequate training, and the resources we need, we'd be pretty successful. The biggest issue is the lack of consistency. The lack of clarity on policy and operations. Often, management isn't clear on what they're supposed to be doing with reports that load late or can't be found or lack the ability to filter. Operations are reactive and we're always behind the curve. District management, yikes. I've now worked under 6 of them and only one of them was actually interested in empowering store level management to get the tools they need to be successful, but they couldn't authorize us to raise starting wages or give merit raises needed to build a team that was invested in our success. Why would they be? We weren't investing in them. All around, it's just gotten worse.

They’re just getting greedier and greedier, too. They expect too much out of their employees, to the point where I and some others in a management position with me have had our mental health severely depleted.
