Work environment is difficult due to micro-managers
Environmental Health Specialist (Former Employee) –  Tucson, AZAugust 15, 2019
Management micromanages everyone, you are given unacheivable expectations and are written up when you don't meet them. The work is not hard and most of your co-workers are nice people, however there are a number of slackers and you get stuck picking up the work. Wages are low for what your expected to do and the benefits are horrible. You have only a high deductible medical plan.

Politics and infighting
Prefer Not To Say (Former Employee) –  Tucson, AZMay 19, 2019
Politics, backwards processes, infighting, back-stabbing, low-pay, and unrealistic expectations. What else would you expect from a local government?

Look, it's an OK place to work if you're have low expectations and don't want to advance very far. They still offer a pension if you stay there for a long time but you have to be willing to take a bit lower pay then you could make in other places (maybe 20-30% lower depending on your skill set) for it.

If you plan on getting into management or coming into a managerial job, however, you'd better like Game of Thrones style politics and be willing to play them ruthlessly. If not, you probably won't last long.

I won't get into examples but, CYA will be your primary job function at all times.
Pros
Pension
Cons
Low pay, politics, back-stabbing, backwards processes.

Pima County
IT Technical Analyst Senior (Current Employee) –  Tucson, AZMarch 20, 2019
I've been working for the County for close to a year and have been enjoying it. I work in a small team where we try and find ways to automate processes that help the day to day operations on many fronts. My co-workers are very knowledgeable and I would consider them experts in this field. I've been able to learn so much within the short amount of time I've been working here. The most enjoyable part of my job is that I get to work on different things on a daily basis and come up with creative solutions to some complex problems.
Pros
Great work schedule, great benefits and good work/life balance
Cons
Having to pay for my parking.

Lack of professionalism and support
Program Coordinator (Former Employee) –  Tucson, AZJanuary 27, 2019
Despite multiple reports to human resource department, issues with upper management were never resolved. Supervisor continued to be unprofessional, unethical, and condescending. Multiple subordinates meet with human resources as a team, with assurance that the concerns would be investigated. Supervisor was sent to multiple trainings on "effective communication, supervision, and management". The behaviors continued and at points in time, some of the employees were criticized in front of others. Needless to say, the behaviors have not stopped and employees are still working in an unhealthy, hostile environment.
Pros
Paid holidays, paid time off
Cons
Lack of advancement opportunities

Employees are bullied by management.
Lab Technician (Former Employee) –  Tucson, AZJanuary 24, 2019
Not uncommon for supervisors to yell and curse at employees, especially if the subordinate is a female. The QAQC Manager is often abusive to employees in front of the Lab Director and nothing is ever done to stop it. Many females have gone to HR for help, but they have done nothing to correct the problem.
Pros
Benefits are good.
Cons
Unhealthy environment, especially for women.

Your manager tells you that you can tell them anything, then later, they use it all against you and fire you.

how wonderful to work with "trustworthy" co-workers, let alone having a boss like this.

I was only a temporary employee with very limited hours and no chance to advance. Supervisor showed zero respect towards me. Would not recommend that position to others.

Building specialist / Operating engineer (Current Employee) –  Tucson Az.July 26, 2018
The building specialist position requires a person to operate building locations all over pima county. The position gives the person a large learning curve based on how the automation system is set up for each location using Delta controls and the Alerton automation systems. You have to visualize what a technician is talking about when they call you about a problem they may be having.

Worked in extremely political environment
Manager, Patient Registration and Admissions (Former Employee) –  Tucson, AZJune 20, 2018
Creativity and suggestions for improvement in operational processes were frowned upon as the workplace culture was extremely political and processes had been set in place, whether efficient and cost-effective or not, by persons still in management positions.

Parking Enforcement (Former Employee) –  Tucson, AZJune 7, 2018
It was fun patrolling the lots inside and out. Telling people where to park and helping others. While some nights were not as eventful. You still had to be on your toes and watch everyone like a hawk. The other employees were friendly and willing to help when you faced issues.

Working on the latest and greatest Motorola equipment was very satisfying. The constant upgrade made sure that you were always on your toes and bring your "A"game.

it would be good if you already retired from someplace else. most of the people are great .. but there is no valid performance review and no opportunity to advance until some one else moves.. the promote from within is talked about but never happens

Contracts Specialist (Former Employee) –  Tucson, AZFebruary 10, 2018
My only issue with Pima County was the upper management selected software for all departments to use. We have changed software vendors several times over a period of less than 10 years. And, in some cases we went back to the older software.
Pros
Good work environment and employees
Cons
Management didn't select robust software for all departments.

Working to change the culture has been a challenge. The people are great. Finding a good place to work is good. Pay is not private sector but the health and retirement benefits are great.
