great work like balance but..
Account Manager (Current Employee) –  Maple Plain, MNOctober 15, 2018
The work life balance was great but management and compensation needs to be updated to be competitive with similar roles in the twin cities. The pay structure is not set up to build up customers!

The company has changed and grown a lot in the time I've worked there.
CNC Operator (Current Employee) –  Plymouth, MNSeptember 17, 2018
A typical day of work is pretty fast paced and gives opportunities for learning and advancement if you have the right drive. Management is pretty cool and takes employee care seriously. The culture at Protolabs is really welcoming and the people are for the most part very nice and knowledgeable in their fields.
Pros
PTO accumulated every pay period increasing in hours accrued based on years of service, the insurance, 401K and stock options for full time employees is pretty good.
Cons
long hours, only get 2 ten minute and 1 twenty minute break, advancement is based on schooling rather than internal promoting

Protolabs wants to see it's employees succeed. It encourages learning more skills to advance within the company.

Protolabs encourages input from the ground up to improved the company and how they meet customer expectations.

Decent place to work
CNC Mill Set Up Operator (Former Employee) –  Plymouth, MNSeptember 5, 2018
Overall management was fine, although at times moved slow. The work environment was clean, must coworkers are approachable and helpful. Pay was decent, although I found much better.
Pros
No set break times, can dictate the pace of your day once you’re hired on
Cons
Sometimes the free and easy nature can cause coworkers to act out

Marketing Intern (Former Employee) –  Maple Plain, MNAugust 4, 2018
A younger culture that has more of a start-up feel that's in the transition of moving to a bigger company. It's super fun and everyone is very welcoming. Also very nice work schedule and meeting set up.

Pros

Forgot where they came from
CNC Machine Operator (Former Employee) –  Plymouth, MNJune 25, 2018
For manufacturing: Boring, long shifts, little opportunity for advancement. They do everything they can to keep the job mundane and repetitive instead of taking advantage of the knowledge experienced employees have. For some reason they stopped hiring from within. I would turn this around or people aren't going to have any motivation.
Pros
Decent pay, not a lot of micromanaging (although some people say otherwise).
Cons
Management is scattered and thinks very little of the employees.

Customer-oriented, but needs to better develop work atmosphere
Customer Service (Current Employee) –  Raleigh, NCJune 20, 2018
Great benefits, hard-working teammates, and fun subject matter. Positive/negative employee experience will vary (sometimes drastically) depending on which department you're in. Overall quality and customer service is very important to them, but management is poor and employees are overworked and burnt out.

Application Specialist (Current Employee) –  Morrisville, NCMay 11, 2018
Been with the company for almost 10 years in August. Always love the people I work with and I always try and pitch in and make a team environment. One thing I don't like is the micro-management that goes on there.
Pros
great co-workers, challenging job
Cons
Micro-Managment

Proto Labs
Account Manager (Former Employee) –  Maple Plain, MNApril 20, 2018
Typical day involved developing account growth, via meetings, calls, strategic email campaigns w/marketing, using Salesforce tools while combining the rest of your tool set in ensuring increased revenue.

Learned complex sales strategies, product development needs, tons more but most importantly learned how a great company such as Proto Labs treats employees. Feels like a family vs. a business,

Understanding the in depth technical aspects of 3D Printing (Polyjet, SLA, SLS, DMLS, and MJF), CNC Machining, Injection Molding and at Sheet Metal is certainly the most difficult. Different avenues to take in all directions, understanding the products purpose and then selling which method, leads to a complex sales strategy.

Overall, lack of great management. High Growth development companies can be difficult to work for in the respect of numerous accounts floating around, aka over hiring.
Pros
Culture, Pto, Benefits, Freedom to talk with one another, opp to make money
Cons
Poor Management, Lack of growth opp

It’s a good company to work for unless something happens that you need to be out of work then they let you go. Everyone kind of keeps to themselves and a lot of them just slack off and leave their work areas so you’ll end up picking up their slack too.
Pros
Get to listen to music while you work, can wear casual clothes
Cons
Short breaks, management

SLS Build Prep (Current Employee) –  Morrisville, NCJanuary 16, 2018
This company knows how to treat their employees. Everyone knows and respects each other, and I have been very comfortable here. My only complaint is that once you are in a position, it is not easy to get out or advance.

Productive
Quality Inspection Lead (Current Employee) –  Rosemount, MNJanuary 16, 2018
Company is good at meeting customer's expectations; however, there is a lack of quality standards in place. There is no Quality department; my Supervisor is a Production Supervisor, and not a Quality Manager. Company's known priority is making parts fast as a prototype company. Quality is a 2nd thought. The most enjoyable part of my job is my actual role, which is assisting any quality questions.
Pros
Good at delivering customer product on time
Cons
Quality is a 2nd thought

The pay is fantastic, the managers are chill, the benefits are great! It's pretty cold in the building at all times. Everyone gets along and they even have cakes in the lunch room at the end of each month to celebrate employee birthdays!
