Imagine how many people's lives he devastated with that decision, and how many people he could have kept employed by not being greedy and accepting that obscene bonus.
Here's an idea ... If you need to reduce operating expenses and the only way to do that is by reducing payroll, reduce everyone's pay across the board by 10% and do not ruin lives by kicking talented, hard-working people to the curb. You would come across as a hero instead of the villain that you have demonstrated yourself to be.
