It depends. More places are requiring ASCP Phlebotomy certification, but at the same time it hasn't helped me land a job at Quest Diagnostics or similar facilities. The training is typically a semester long (four months) and usually requires 100+ hours of lecture and lab, then a 100-venipuncture clinical rotation, and then you can sit for the ASCP certification exam.

No you do not have to. Employers usually look for experience and you can find a company that is willing to train you. I do recommend that you do go to school. It looks good on your resume and there are things you can learn that you might not learn by just being trained.
