The work life balance is horrible but the strive for student success is the mission. The extra hours goes towards community engagement, student data analysis, and team collaboration. If an individual prefers to work independently and be given autonomy Rocketship is not a good fit. Rocketship strives off of community and team work, it is not an option it's a necessity.

This place is a cesspool of drama. If you are a person of color, especially a black woman, don’t do it. The principals play favorites and the Director of Schools only promotes his friends. Nothing is based on Merit and the whole org is gossipy. As staff you are the last to know things. Both times we were in the news staff was last to know. The Principal attacks people and management is in on it. STAY AWAY!!

This place has the worst work-life balance I have ever experienced. They expect you to work 12 hour days and if you don't, then you're seen as a slacker.

I have enjoyed working here since the day I started. This is a network that actually believes ALL children can achieve greatness. You don't get that at every charter school in DC. This means that teachers are going above and beyond to ensure their students learn! I would encourage educators who have a passion for teaching students in under-resourced communities to apply because the school needs strong educators as the network grows! Students have made so much growth. Last thing, to work here you have to have a growth mindset and know that the work will be challenging, but the outcome has truly been greater overtime

Rocketship Legacy Prep is by far the worst school I've ever worked at in all my years that I have worked with children. FIRST THING FIRST ADULTS ARE PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON CHILDREN! A SCHOOL LEADER DOES UNTIL THEY SCREAM. Ask any 3rd or 4th grade student what happens when they get in trouble, and they will freely tell you what the school leader does or has done to them. There is NO PROFESSIONALISM! Professionalism is completely absent! Daily classroom teaching consists of screaming at the students. Sadly, teachers have to adapt. Why? If not, school leaders will treat you as if you have not followed protocol! The outcome of such enabling and desensitizing of the Teaching Professionals and students, the students will ONLY respond when an adult has raised their voice in an extreme way. Yelling and screaming at the students is definitely preferred and encouraged by this school. Many teachers attempt to hide their tears during the school day that come from the daily extreme hardships of working in a school with no Support for the teachers and unrealistic deadlines to name a couple of issues. One teacher suffered an anxiety attack on school property and no one knew. .(And It wasn't because of the students) It's disheartening! Egregious behaviors by students are not handled properly! Students are not being held accountable for their actions. School leaders will send students that are still in an escalated state, back into the same classroom that student was a disruption in. When California school officials visit for observation, Rocketship, provides false information. Information that - more...

Worked at Rocketship for 3 years. Loved it for the most part. The kids are amazing and the parents can be a challenge if you don't build relationships with them. The workplace culture is crazy though. It seems very clickish and if you are not IN THE IN CROWD YOU WILL BE OUT!! Found out I was terminated while looking for a job on Indeed lol but seriously.
Pros

Cons
Job Culture. Job Security. Worklife balance

Family oriented if you meet the criteria, no communication but very friendly and caring for community and parents. They move and train families and make leaders in their community to advocate for themselves at school board, city officials etc...

great models for teaching but everyone is inexperienced or untrained on how to work with SPED kids. My students spent pullout with me but when back in class they were just put on computers and put into the corner. Or if they were “too extreme” they’d lock them out of the classroom, all day every day.
Pros
$$$ resources are plentiful
Cons
No consistency, management is inexperienced, everyone is angry and stressed

The Rocketship IT Internship was a great way to get your feet wet in IT. Typically, you provide IT support for nine different sites 2-3 times a week. Jump Start (IT company contracted with Rocketship) was a huge part in training onsite and remotely of how to troubleshoot basic computer problems and network issues onsite. The staff are friendly and easy-going.

The hardest part of the job is telling staff that their hard drive is corrupt or damaged and there is no way of extracting their data.

The most enjoyable part is autonomy from Jump Start to allow me to learn on my own, but be readily available for escalation support. The technicians are passionate about teaching the ropes about IT.
Pros
Considerate of college studies
Cons
Network environment was a bit stale and once you learn the basics, you begin to plateau and do not learn any other IT skills

Each campus is different. Some campuses are amazing and have a supportive work culture. Others have a fast-paced, cut-throat culture that negatively impacts teachers and support staff. If you really want to learn what it is like to be a teacher in a short amount of time, Rocketship is the way to go. Average teaching lifespan is 4 years. If you make it to year 4, you are golden. Teacher turnover rate is a real thing, and it really depends upon who is in campus leadership.

This network is very data-driven so if you are against Testing, NWEA/Map and such then this is NOT the place for you. If you thrive in an environment that could be labeled as micro-managing then this place will feel just right for you. Curriculum constantly changes every year, so you need to be someone who can go with the flow, and can respond to coaching live in the moment.

If you are still not sure about working for a business charter network then I would say, go see the campuses. Notice how a typical daily routine works, this is not a traditional school: Recess and Lunch combo is only 30-45min, there are no extracurriculars such as art and music. But some campuses have Science/engineering. No cafeteria, school library, sports, or grassy fields. Out of all the Rocketship's I've seen. Only Mateo Sheedy has real grass, and where I have seen students actually running and playing a team game for Recess/PE.

Check this network out for yourself, do your research. It is not a place for everyone...and realize that once you connect with a recruiter you will be seeing and be sold a show. Don't get blinded

Rocketship Public Education thrives on making the schools a quality place for students to learn and parents to feel engaged and empowered about their child's education.

A typical day at work is long for the administrators and teachers, but the culture is positive and encouraging.

School built on great ideals and really good intentions. Workload is intense. Teachers are burned out and not supported emotionally given the amount of trauma they endure.

There were 3 other people in the lobby. HR pleeb said "Hi, you are all applying for the same job today! Isn't this fun? Hey, here's a sticky note pad and a lipgloss".
Yes.

A small round ball that had lipgloss.

How unfortunately inappropriate for a man.

It was like Survivor Island.

Do NOT recommend this place to anyone. Maybe the schools are better, but Corporate has this wierd hushed vibe.

At HQ there are easily 40+ people in a completely open environment, just tables lined up in rows.

But you could hear a pin drop. ZERO noise. ZERO creative thinking going on .

I asked my new teammates what their "core value" would be, like the schools had chosen theirs. The people I asked said "hard working" and "tenacious". Hmmm, sounds like a jail sentence more than an environment that fosters ingenuity.
Pros
Free coffee and snacks
Cons
Silence. Hushed environment and a very odd HR team

However, the days were LONG. It was a special day if I left work right away. It was typical to spend 10 hours a day, 4-5 days a week. The planning and lesson content was high demand and heavy load. Too many students in the classroom at once, but GREAT pay and benefits!
