Challenging But Rewarding
Assurance Intern (Former Employee) –  Clayton, MOMay 22, 2018
An intern at RubinBrown can expect to get training and then thrown in to the fire. The environment and people, however are always able and willing to help in whatever way possible. The hours are long and the work is complex, but you have all the necessary tools to succeed. The internship involved basic training regarding the firm (time entry, software, etc.), then training regarding your specific field of work (audit, real estate audit, tax, etc.), then you learn what your schedule is (whether working at one major client or multiple smaller clients). The firm was constantly seeking feedback in regards to training, what areas you liked, and ways they could improve overall.
Pros
Great learning experience, great pay, great opportunities
Cons
Long hours, complex work

Staff great. Management incompetent.
Assurance Staff (Former Employee) –  DenverMarch 8, 2018
Low pay. Culture of fear. No benefits whatsoever except cafeteria style food. Staff was great. Managers are unqualified and extremely rude. Some partners were helpful and knowledgeable and probably the only reason I stayed as long as I did.

Great people, competent management needed
Office Support (Former Employee) –  Saint Louis, MONovember 20, 2017
Firm has experienced growth in recent years. Support staff is undervalued. Perhaps this is because management literally considers support staff a tax write-off.

Indeed, they are an afterthought. It would be good if the firm hired an operations manager who could implement best practices across the firm for support staff. Leadership needs to listen to their advice.

If you are looking for a place to grow in your support career, this isn't the place for you. If you are a hard worker and strive to hone your skills to be of more value to the firm, you will not be rewarded. There are no systems in place to track the performance of support staff and compensation is minimal.

Solid Company
Associate (Current Employee) –  St. Louis, MONovember 18, 2017
The people you work with are great. You are often given more responsibility and ownership of work. However, salaries are under industry average. It is sometimes difficult to get the type of work you want to do. There is no official senior title for associates. That comes with a few cons such as; more responsibility without the pay increase, no promotion until manager after 5+ years, and harder to exit without the senior title.

Every workplace has its cons, but the people are great and the culture is awesome. Everyone is very friendly, intelligent, and helpful. It is a very fast growing company and are always opening up new offices. There is a lot of opportunity to grow. The partners care about their workers.

Staff (Current Employee) –  Denver, CONovember 7, 2017
The company culture is great, with good mentoring and career advancement opportunities. The company pays below market, and the benefits could be better. There is no paid maternity leave, which is a big negative factor for working here.

Denver office is still merging after six years
Staff Accountant (Former Employee) –  Denver, COAugust 30, 2017
The sales pitch and vision of the culture is kind and optimistic. The execution is lacking. The Denver office was acquired six years ago and it is apparent that the way the company functions is different by location. The company continues to grow via acquisition, but is not putting infrastructure in place to support the growth. They have a one firm vision, but so far the closest they have gotten to execution of one firm is streamlining the 1040 process across the company. The hardest part of the job is that my role was not defined and I was told that my job description was our core values. The staff members were the best part of RubinBrown. There were some amazing people, but leadership was not focused on superior client service. Teams are measured by net revenues brought to the firm. At times, this is in contrast to what a client needs. It seems as though our Assurance department is under solid leadership and managed to rise above the fray, but Tax and ESG are still bogged down in the history of where the Denver office has been.
Pros
Good people
Cons
no systems and everything is done to the exception.

Very Slow Paced and Application troubleshooting with no training
IT Helpdesk Analyst (Current Employee) –  Brentwood, MOApril 26, 2017
A typical day of work is come in and work on the ticket queue. We take calls that come in all day as part of our work load. Management has not been very helpful or promising in my position for advancement or even invest in any sort of training or project opportunities. The most enjoyable part of my job is working with the team members to help resolve issues that I have been involved in the past.

Intern (Current Employee) –  St. Louis, MOMarch 6, 2017
Good company overall, exactly what would be expected from an accounting company. Opportunity to work on many different projects at once and the managers and partners are very available for help.

Intern (Former Employee) –  St. Louis, MOJune 22, 2016
I was treated as an entry level accountant as an intern. This allowed me to gain experience through work assigned. I was also able to gain professional skills through customer contact, attending meetings and trainings, as well as being able to communicate with management levels at the firm.

High turnover, low pay, insincere corporate Koolaid environment
Associate (Former Employee) –  DenverJune 17, 2015
Unpleasant working environment. Very high turnover due to poor career opportunities, below average compensation, unfriendly managers and partners. Public accounting firm that forces tax staff to do long term stints at clients in "client employee" capacity - if people wanted to work in industry they would get industry jobs and not go into public accounting so that they can be "rented out" at partners' whim.
Pros
Good location downtown
Cons
Managers rude, unhelpful. Partners untrustworthy, deceiving. Below average pay, constant promises to increase to market - but never deliver. Nepotism.
