Good place if you want a relatively stress free work environment
Project Manager (Former Employee) –  San Diego, CAAugust 11, 2018
Sandag is a public agency. Like many public agencies the salaries are not as high as private sector work, but it's still pretty competitive, especially if you consider the benefits and that Calpers (you get to keep social security payments in lieu of Calpers contributions) so theres more in your pocket. Biggest drawback is that Consultants do alot there, so if you want to take the lead regarding technical or process engineering, learn and become a true industry expert, that may be hard.
Pros
Location (Downtown San Diego), Benefits, Low Stress
Cons
Growth limited, promotion difficult, Consultants do all the work

The hardest part of the job
Associate Accountant (Former Employee) –  San Diego, CAJune 16, 2018
The hardest part of the job was the lack of a team environment. Too many government employees would not step out of the box of their defined job description.
Pros
CalPERS retirement plan
Cons
Lack of a team environment

SANDAG Sand Diego Association of Governments
Criminal Justice Research Associate (Current Employee) –  San Diego, CANovember 1, 2017
SANDAG is a rewarding place to work since is strives to improve the quality of life for San Diegans. We are very team oriented and everyone supports each other. They also offer a lot of training opportunities. We work with a lot of outside agencies and program partners which can be challenging at times but it also allows to build great working relationships. The most challenging part of my job is dealing with program politics and remaining neutral while serving as an independent evaluator. The best part is evaluating new or pilot programs and making recommendations based on outcomes derived from data driven analysis of evidence based and proven best practice models.
Pros
Free COMPAS and TDM programs, great benefits great team of people.
Cons
Unpaid parking

Productive and flexible
Criminal Justice Research Assistant (Former Employee) –  San Diego, CAOctober 28, 2017
Although work can be fast paced at times the project managers make sure to accommodate the deadlines so they don't interfere with school schedules for those still in school. The work environment is great and everyone acts very courteous and professional. Typically there aren't any set work schedules since you can change your schedule hours per week.

Good place to work!
Toll Attendant (Current Employee) –  Chula Vista, CASeptember 23, 2013
Pros – - State employee
- Superior benefits
- More PTO and recognized holidays
- Better pay rate than private companies
- Solid leadership
- CALPERS pension
- Very flexible hours, doesn't follow the mandatory "8-hour" daily schedule. Which means you can work 10 hours for 4 days a week.

Cons – - Little to No advancement
- Company cannot make maximizing profits a goal because it's a public entity
- Doesn't match IRA contributions
- Promotes public retirement accounts than private independent retirement accounts.

Advice to Senior Management – Stagnation. The company lacks aggression that the private sector has thus it stagnates and this is mainly because public entities are forbidden to maximize profits.
