Good training and inconsistent management.
Facilities worker (Current Employee) –  Lewiston, IDMay 21, 2018
SEL is a very good place to work, they buy lunch every Friday, have a gym and a health clinic that is free for the employees and family on their plans. The biggest down side is how hard it is for advancement in some areas and that management is very inconsistent.
Pros
Free food every Friday, good pay and benefits.
Cons
Inconsistent management and lack of forward mobility.

Senior Electrical Engineer (Former Employee) –  Lake Zurich, ILApril 27, 2018
I loved working for SEL but then moved to Michigan. It was a top notch organization. I met with the CEO personally several times and we both went to Purdue University and had a lot in common. This company is highly recommended.

Thieves!
Engineer (Former Employee) –  Pullman, WAMarch 19, 2018
They have a whole week dedicated to how awesome SEL is to work for. A few more weeks of indoctrination is certainly needed for some people.

Don't let anyone see what you're working on or any patents that are pending could be stolen. Don't use their network which they monitor regularly.

If they need a fall guy for something and you're the weakest link start looking for a lawyer or a new job.

Pay is way below industry standard and even if you take into account the low cost of living is still outrageously low.

Culture
Assembler (Former Employee) –  Lewiston, IDFebruary 27, 2018
SEL was all about culture and did a good job of making the focus seem like it was more about the employees and less about making the deadlines or making money.

Glorified Assistant
Intern (Former Employee) –  Pullman, WAFebruary 21, 2018
For interns SEL boasts a great experience to learn and grow as a student while also making it seem like your guaranteed a job after the internship. This was not the case. I did not gain any valuable experiences because all I did was glorified assistant work. It was either paperwork or staring at a computer all day doing mundane tasks. People often just hand off their unwanted work to interns when they could have done it themselves. Also the SEL culture that is talked about so much in Friday Lunch is not relevant to interns. They couldn’t care less about them. The same goes with assemblers. The way I’ve heard people talk about assemblers is awful because they are hard working people. The managers act very entitled and like they are above all. This job was really a waste of time for me and people treated me terribly as an intern. Every small mistake is the end of the world.
Pros
Free lunch on fridays
Cons
Feeling of being watched, inconsistent culture, no advancement opportunities

Good place to work, Maybe.
Assembler / Machine Operator (Former Employee) –  Pullman, WAJanuary 26, 2018
Overall, not a bad place to work, if You can handle extremely
repetitive tasks where the slightest error is treated harshly.

Schweitzer was great when I started, however, in recent years
the company culture and quality of management and supervision
has taken a sharp downhill trend.

If You are lucky enough to get assigned to one of the few remaining
well-trained supervisors, it can still be a good place to work.
Pros
Employee Stock Ownership, Free Lunch on Fridays

Poor Management

You get a sense of the company's exemplary culture as soon as you begin orientation. The level of respect that they have for their customers and employees creates a very welcoming work environment.

Clear future, fun to work but the town is boring
Software Engineer (Current Employee) –  Pullman, WAJanuary 1, 2018
You have 9 to 5 work day schedule, there are always works so you will always be challenged. Jobs are secured as long as you keep learning. The town is pretty boring. Great for raising family but for me (used to live in big city), Pullman seems not fit well.
Pros
Free Friday lunch, gym, clinic
Cons

Productive and engaging place to work
NPI Manufacturing Engineer (Former Employee) –  Pullman, WADecember 5, 2017
Schweitzer is a dynamic place to work. They build almost exclusively in the USA and the products are used in the power industry by many companies. Their products are superior.
Working closely with other engineering groups as well as manufacturing and quality allows an excellent exchange of ideas and product information.
Pros
Good management great products
Cons
Lots of OT due to an expanding product base

A great place to work but the management was lacking
Engineering Intern - Protection (Former Employee) –  Charlotte, NCJuly 6, 2017
Schweitzer Engineering Labs is by the leader in power system protection with their relay technology compared to their competitors. That alone makes this company worth working for. The only quarrels I had with SEL is that the management seemed to be ran poorly at times and there was sometimes not much charisma within the office. Other than that, the projects were always exciting and the engineers were always willing to teach you many lessons.
