Great agency to work for.
I have worked at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office for over 10 years. During my time with this agency, I have witnessed continual positive growth. The agency is very in-tune with the needs of their employees and has a steadfast commitment to the community. Like many others employed at this agency, I have had the privilege to expand my knowledge and skill sets through professional training and education. Along with my full time employment with this agency, I am a military reservist. This agency goes above and beyond to support members of the military reserves and veterans alike. The co-workers I have the privilege of working with are very professional, educated, and are like family. The benefits provided by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and Shelby County Commission are extremely competitive when compared to other agencies throughout the state. These benefits gives the employees of this agency the ability to make a very comfortable and stable life for themselves and family. Having worked for and with many other law enforcement agencies throughout my career, I can proudly say that the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is the best I have seen and I could not imagine working anywhere else.
Deputy Sheriff in Columbiana, AL

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is generally an excellent place to work, and it is one of the best options for law enforcement employment in the State of Alabama. Pros: The hiring standards are relatively tight, which means that most employees tend to be of high quality and squared-away. There is an in-depth training program for new hires. This keeps the organization's foundation solid. The office provides in-house training blocks several times a year, as well as paying for outside training, to maintain those standards. The firearms range is world class, and it's used for training by multiple local and Federal agencies because of its quality. The office is mid-sized, so it avoids some of the issues you would encounter in both small and large departments. The political climate in Shelby County is very accommodating to law enforcement. There are some jurisdictions where it can be difficult to work with the courts and impossible to find an impartial jury; that is not the case here. All sworn deputies start at patrol, but there is an array of options for specialized assignments (such as school resource officers, investigations, K9, and task forces) and collateral duties (such as the tactical team), if that's what you desire. The pay is very, very competitive for the area. The Sheriff's Office is not currently the highest paid department in the Birmingham metro area (at least for topped out employees), but it is still among the highest paid, and there are educational and fitness incentives as well to boost that. The employee insurance plans are very reasonably priced. The county owns several residences at local parks, and deputies can apply to live in those for free in exchange for doing grounds keeping. The administration is forward thinking, and they seem to be generally receptive to feedback and looking for ways to improve the office. Cons: It's a law enforcement job, so all the normal caveats (strange hours, some unpleasant conditions) apply. Those hold true for most law enforcement jobs, however. The only real knocks come from circumstances controlled by the County, not by the Sheriff's Office: budget. Pay and pay scales are set by the County. The County has not always been great about general raises or cost of living raises. When COLAs are granted, the typical pattern has been to grant a one time, lump sum COLA payment. Since that doesn't stack on previous COLAs, the payments don't keep pace with the actual cost of living increases in the area. Overtime is relatively strictly controlled (and not earned until you exceed 171 hours in a 28 day period). It is not uncommon to see deputies working additional jobs to supplement their income. There are some other pay oddities that should probably be addressed during the next pay study (Sergeants, because they're eligible for overtime, can end up making more than Lieutenants, who aren't eligible for overtime; you lose money by going to some specialized assignments with more responsibility, which is counterintuitive). Overall however, the pay is still very, very good, especially for law enforcement in Alabama. Combined with an excellent work environment and dedicated co-workers, the Sheriff's Office is one of the best places to work.

Like any employment place, there are flaws, but nothing to make me want to leave. They are a "family first" kind of company and care about their employees.
