Sergeant Deputy Sheriff in Columbiana, AL
on November 12, 2021
Working in law enforcement is challenging at times, but serving the community and working with great people make it worth it. There are a lot of good people at the SCSO who work well as a team and will gladly help you out. Every deputy sheriff receives a take-home car after completing his/her one year probationary period. Most patrol deputies work Sun - Tues or Wed - Friday, with Saturday being a swing day between the shifts. Every weekend is either 3 or 4 days long.

A typical day at the Shelby County Sheriff's Office is serving the citizens in the community by ensuring the safety and security of it's residents. The duties of a Deputy Sheriff focuses on providing law enforcement services to the residents of Shelby County with primary responsibilities to the unincorporated areas. As a Deputy Sheriff, you are responsible for enforcing all Federal, State, and County laws; investigating and reporting crime; arresting on-sight violators and many more job duties.

If you are going to work in the law enforcement field, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office is a great place to work with great benefits. Jail Deputies and Deputy Sheriff's typically work 12 hour shifts giving you 3-4 consecutive days off each week. It allows for a nice work/life balance. You immediately start earning vacation days, personal days, and sick leave. You can also participate in a fitness testing program and earn two additional days off each year. Additional pay incentives are offered for college education (up to 15% for an applicable master's degree) on top of your base pay. If you successfully pass the fitness test, you get an additional 2% pay incentive. There are also opportunities for overtime. Health and dental insurance runs about $100 a month for family coverage. The leave, pay, and insurance benefits are available to all employees. The benefits are just one piece of the puzzle. The citizens of Shelby County are very supportive of their Sheriff's Office, and this makes a huge difference working in the law enforcement field. If you choose to work in the jail, you will be shocked by how well the facility is maintained. The agency works to provide good equipment and provide above average training to its deputies and jail deputies.

This agency far exceeded my original expectations. I was looking for an opportunity to begin my lawn enforcement career before pursuing a federal law enforcement career. However, after a number of years with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, I decided this is where I want to plant my roots. The men and women of this agency are the best in the business! The leadership generally cares about its people and their families and has a Constitutionally minded sense of service to the community

I have worked at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office for over 10 years. During my time with this agency, I have witnessed continual positive growth. The agency is very in-tune with the needs of their employees and has a steadfast commitment to the community. Like many others employed at this agency, I have had the privilege to expand my knowledge and skill sets through professional training and education. Along with my full time employment with this agency, I am a military reservist. This agency goes above and beyond to support members of the military reserves and veterans alike. The co-workers I have the privilege of working with are very professional, educated, and are like family. The benefits provided by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and Shelby County Commission are extremely competitive when compared to other agencies throughout the state. These benefits gives the employees of this agency the ability to make a very comfortable and stable life for themselves and family. Having worked for and with many other law enforcement agencies throughout my career, I can proudly say that the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is the best I have seen and I could not imagine working anywhere else.
