Direct Support Professional (Former Employee) – Saint Peter, MN – September 4, 2018
I learned how to interact with various of individuals with different backgrounds, diagnoses, abilities, etc. It can be a challenging place to work and may test your patience, but the reward of helping an underserved population is amazing. You receive plenty of training and usually are working with another staff in the home. Most days on the job are quite relaxed. Some days require running individuals to appointments that require more professional attire. Compensation is GREAT for what you are actually having to do. No complaints. The only downfall are the odd hours. Definitely good hours if you're a student and are looking for employment after a day of class.

Great people to work with. Have the ability to learn about mental illness hands on and create a relationship with the clients. The work itself can be stressful at times but the overall outcome seeing the growth within the clients is worth it.

At the beginning of each shift a medication count of current clients medications takes place. Staff then are required to read the notes in the communication book.I typically work alone on a majority of my scheduled shifts unless there is an activity planned, then there will be two staff. Staff are responsible for documentation on each shift, cleaning, cooking, assistance with ADL's, transportation, planning and activities. Each day is different based on client appointments and plans.
