Just not an interesting place to work
Black Label Donor Services Agent (Current Employee) –  Palo Alto, CAApril 21, 2018
Work is interesting and impactful but the company is having an issue with culture and turnover is high because the work is BORING. It is a great fit for those who love structure, rigidity and knowing what the day will consist of. It is not a good fit for those who need an interesting job, interaction or overall brain stimulation.
Pros
Truly doing great work, Very stable environment
Cons
pretty much everything

Rating based on off-site freelance work
Freelance writer and editor (Current Employee) –  Bay Area, CAApril 8, 2018
This review is based on my experience doing a handful of assignments as a freelance writer and copy editor in the past six months. I work closely with only two people, all of whom were eminently professional. I have not worked in the offices, so I can't speak to the culture outside of the overall culture.
The marketing people I work with provide me the resources and time to do a good job, and they provide with good direction regarding expectations and offer assignments that fit my interests and strengths. At the same time, I've had the autonomy to shape each project within their parameters.
The most enjoyable part of this work is helping to contribute to the foundation's mission to improve life for everyone in Silicon Valley by tackling the region's toughest problems.
Pretty decent pay. No problems getting paid -- something that's not always the case with freelancing.

Management needs an overhaul
Assistant (Former Employee) –  Mountain View, CAMarch 17, 2018
The position I held was within the C level management area, however the expectations were for that of a more senior level manager with a different type background not equivalent to my skillset and 10+ years of experience and background. This role has had a high turnover - at least 4 people over 3 years. (One should take a look at the C manager to which this role reports) Hence, the workload is high, overwhelming, stressful and definitely not worth the salary. In general, there is a "throw under the bus" mentality and blatent hierarchy ruling with a requirement to "tattle" to management.

The foundation has much to offer the community however management could use an overhaul.

I can't believe they're still looking for an EA
Anonymous (Former Employee) –  Mt. View, CAMarch 12, 2018
It's been 6 years since I left SVCF and they're still looking for an EA for this high level person? When I was there, they went through 4 EAs in 2 years. That was 6 years ago. How many EAs would it take for the Board & CEO to recognize that it's not the EAs that needs to be looked at and changed, it's the person who keeps changing EAs. Do they understand the concept of hiring and firing and how it's costing the "non-profit" money?

This is one of the reasons why I left SVCF. I took a lower paying job but the culture is much more collaborative and less cut throat! SVCF refuse to look at internal problems and continue to wear rose colored glasses. Take your blinders off! You are ruining the core of this wonderful idea.

This place needs to clean house from top to bottom!

Great mission driven org
Associate (Former Employee) –  Mountain View, CAOctober 13, 2017
Very competitive, largest community foundation, inspiring mission. Smart co-workers and awesome team. Benefits are great - dental, vision, 401k match, sabbatical after 4 years, telecommuting one day per week. Lots of team events and free food days, free snacks and drinks in the lunch room. For associates they have retention program - your salary automatically increases with every year you are here and you can still get your annual increase after the review. I went to school while i worked there and the manager was really flexible with my schedule.
The management team has been here forever and it is a small company so not a lot of opportunities for promotions and moving up.
Pros
Telecommuting, benefits, snacks, frequent free lunches, awesome mission
Cons
Small company not a lot of room to move up

Doing Well by Helping Others Do Good
Seasonal Grants Associate (Former Employee) –  Mountain View, CAJune 13, 2017
The seasonal positions at Silicon Valley Community Foundation are a great way to learn about the organization. Every year, starting in late October to year's end, they need extra people to help process contributions from their donors to various non-profits. The people who work here are idealistic, smart and committed to making a difference in the world. They are led by management who have each made a career in the non-profit world. This is a well-run, high-profile organization.
Pros
Well-run Non-profit Organization; benefits for full-time employees
Cons
Could use more diversity in staff

Looks good from outside, not so much on the inside
Donor Engagement (Former Employee) –  Mountain View, CAMarch 29, 2017
Leadership is narcissistic and resistant to change

Personnel turnover at the senior, mid and junior levels dangerously high and above peer entities in the area

Donors complain about the lack of information and services for fees paid

Nonprofits are supported in a fragmented, irrational manner

Workdays are long and easily can be 7 days a week
Pros
Silicon Valley network and presence
Cons
Micromanagement

It was fun working at this place.
Very friendly, helpful and co operative staff.
Despite of the work pressure on some days, the team members work together, making the environment extremely comfortable to make you feel ease and cope up with the work load.

Fun Place with Great Ethics and Low Pays
Grants Associate (Current Employee) –  Mountain View, CAFebruary 3, 2016
It's a nice place with great people who work hard and don't easily say no if you need any help understanding things. The organizations provides good training and has pretty good standard procedure for the work they handle.

Only if they paid there employees well, most of the people would stick around. It's an organization with great values and mission.

Review for SVCF
Computer Support Specialist (Former Employee) –  Silicon Valley, CAMarch 26, 2013
At SVCF, everyone is very nice and courteous.
There's no 3 month probation period, you get the full benefit package starting from day 1.
401k is 100% vested.
Even though salary is not as competitive. However, it has some of the best employee benefit compared to other companies.
Pros
free soda and snacks
Cons
locate in mountain view, commute could be problematic for non locals
