Caring for people is great, priority expectation I'd job first, family last
DSP (Direct Support Professional) (Former Employee) - Altoona, PA - May 13, 2022
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedThey keep raising the starting wage, but do not increase long term employees wages. After more than 15 years only making less than $2 more than a new hire with no experience. Employee share if medical insurance premiums through the roof. To get their best plan, which is lousy, employee share of a family plan is almost $1,000 a month. And with making under $14/HR their is nothing left over. Keep trying to change work schedules and lots of pressure to work overtime.

I'm only still here because of the individuals I work with
Direct Support Professional (Current Employee) - Altoona, PA - April 2, 2022
Fulfilling job, but you would be better off doing it at another company with better pay and management that respects your time. If it weren't for the individuals I currently work with, I would have left this company a while ago.

A fun & never boring place to work.
Direct Support Professional (DSP) (Former Employee) - Altoona, PA - January 1, 2022
I truly loved working for Skills. Any request for anything the individuals asked for or desired was honored. Excellent training. Family visits & involvement is encouraged & welcomed. The supports the individuals need is top notch. If they want to go on vacation anywhere, Skills will find a way, pay staff to take them & pay all costs. Social & recreational activities are encouraged & paid for. Just overall, great homes for individuals with disabilities.
Pros
Secure jobs, versatile schedules, excellent working environments, great benefits. Lots of overtime available if you want it.
Cons
Sometimes homes will become short staffed & you will be needed to work long hours, some in management are slow to respond to concerns.

Dont do it
DSP (Direct Support Professional) (Former Employee) - Altoona, PA - December 28, 2021
This place has been the worst to work at. No work life balance, you need to use vacation but they just want to call you in when you try to use it. I was open with them on my disability, and they spat in my face and lied to me so that they could call me in when I legally could not safely come to work. Was told when I put my two weeks in I would be paid my personal and vacation time, don't know why I trusted that. Don't work here.
Pros
You never have to deal with your family.
Cons
By the time you quit you won't have a family.

Fun job but can be stressful
Direct Support Professional (Current Employee) - Altoona, PA - November 8, 2021
Every day was different and overall it’s a fun place to work. You grow to care for your consumers but management sucks. The pay isn’t that good and insurance is way too expensive though
Cons
Low pay, expensive benefits

Never again
Caregiver (Former Employee) - Altoona, PA - July 16, 2021
Not the place to work if you have family or friends you'll be over worked and underpaid. Pay tops off at $13 so if you work there for 30yrs you'll never make more than $13. The company knows you'll get attached to clients and use that to their advantage.
Pros
Clients
Cons
Too many to list

No respect
Direct Support Professional (Former Employee) - Altoona, PA - May 5, 2021
There is very little respect for others and those who put in the work. So many judgmental people and so much talking about people behind their backs. Toxic work environment

Dsp (Current Employee) - Altoona, PA - September 5, 2020
Skills pays well but not enough for what the job Intel's your a cook, house keeper, med administrator, driver, and caregiver all in one ! Also the advertised promote within the company is a lie! They work you to the bone with little reward! You'll get to met and grow a great bond with the employees and Individuals you work with everyday
Pros
Good pay, awesome individuals and co-workers, always open shifts available
Cons
Always open shifts available. They don't care that you have a life, they have favorites in management, they treat people who've been working here for years with no respect.

Its a joke trying to advance in this company unless your one of the few favorites of managment regardless of how many hours/ years you put in
Residential Team Leader (Current Employee) - Altoona, PA - January 9, 2020
The individuals we support are wonderful but managment on the other hand not so much! They push most of their work on to the team leaders. Managers don't help/ support the TL's with unruly staff open hours

Loved the job
Supervisor (Former Employee) - Altoona, PA - January 1, 2020
Great places to work. I loved making a difference in their lives. It is a family type of setting so you could feel the love everyone shared, even the HR office.

Fun place to work
CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant (Former Employee) - Altoona, PA - December 5, 2019
This job is fun and very rewarding. They always have this to do for the residents as well as staff. The home was to be inviting with a positive attitude. And it was.

Hard To Advance
DSP (Direct Support Professional) (Current Employee) - Altoona, PA - November 4, 2019
First of all, at our employee meeting back in the beginning of the year we were asked to “please write positive reviews to get our indeed scores back up”, which was ridiculous. Let’s focus on how to organically bring satisfaction up instead of worrying about what we look like to the outside. Secondly, if you are the type of person who wants to do more with your life, use a degree, advance in the company, this is not the organization for you. Very cliquey, and if you aren’t favored you are getting passed over. If you like to come to work, do tasks for some amazing individuals, get underpaid for it, get asked to work a crazy amount of overtime, then go home and do it all again the next day, this is the job for you.

Was a good job bad management all across the board!
Direct Support Professional (Former Employee) - Altoona, PA - October 11, 2019
Was employed there 6 years left for personal reasons tried to get hired back they denied me but rehired staff thy was fired! Clients were awesome management not so much Program Supervisors were rude one slammed a door in 2 staff’s faces and got away with it even going to the higher up leadership. No room for growth. Was made to lie in daily paperwork so the state wouldn’t cite them

Do Not Recommend!
DSP (Direct Support Professional) (Current Employee) - Altoona, PA - July 28, 2019
Short staffed. Overworked, underpaid, don't even ask for time off! Overall it says something's pretty bad when they ask employee's to go write good reviews for them to offset the bad ones.
Pros
Nothing.
Cons
Everything. You get paid less to work daylight.
