Respectfull, educational, and definitely a safety conscious company
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (Current Employee) –  Crete, NEAugust 1, 2018
Have been on tour and orientation at other plants and this company in crete is amazing!!! Personally I think orientation is a bit long, but.... safety and policy is very important, and they are doing the most they can to educate and orientate new hires, very clean and open door policy is true, plus HR is on top of their game. Upper management is amazing, trainers seem to be very helpful.
Obviously the pay and benefits are great with Smithfield's, very happy with my career at Smithfield.
Pros
Pay, benefits, advancement opportunities, and management is very involved
Cons
My only complaint is my own problem, im relocating, and I drive 1hr 20min one way... but that is not Smithfield's fault.

Warehouse material handler (Former Employee) –  Kinston, NCJanuary 20, 2019
It is too easy to gain absent points on your record at Smithfield the no fault policy is ridiculous and they worked during major weather events and you have to be there if you had to be off you were assed points to your record
Pros
benefits
Cons

Great place to work with wonderful people that care. Good work/life balance flexibility. They could improve a little on compensation, there sort of on the lower spectrum on wages.

Smithfield " Go for It"!
General Laborer (Former Employee) –  Smithfield, VAJanuary 18, 2019
+ Relaxed smooth work pace. Genuine team work.

+Simple things fairly easy unless you take on a bigger role of work. Then you'll understand data entry for QA inspections, production analysis.

+Overall, Management is great! It's sometimes that one bad seed that tries to make everyone else look "negative".

+Depends on the leadership in the workspace.

+Nothing, is hard about the work. However, you stand up all day and consistently stand in the same workspace for the shift.

+Getting to know and interact amongst others alongside making good money!
Pros
Great money and benefits!
Cons
Driving to Smithfield daily!

It's all who you know
Manager-in-Training (Current Employee) –  Beaver, UTJanuary 7, 2019
I've worked with the company for just shy of three years now and have had a good run. It's not a bad place but it is one where if you know people and can brown nose those people you know, then you'll go really far. I have learned a lot but I plan on taking my education and degrees somewhere else where I can spread my wings even further and really advance. Overall, not a bad place but there is a quite a strong culture in this company. And you're either with that culture or you're fighting it.
Pros
Benefits, Great work hours, Lot of training programs
Cons
Lower wages, need to know someone to advance quickly

Probably a good company...
Operations Superintendent (Former Employee) –  Kinston, NCJanuary 7, 2019
Kinston, NC is a prime example of how one extremely bad operations manager can ruin an entire facility. There is no work-life balance due to very poor planning and decision making, which also results in additional costs to the company. Unfortunately, when brought up, the only consideration is pounds out the door regardless of quality (if you can get it past QA). It's become nearly impossible to recruit good supervisors/managers and the plant losses them faster than they can be replaced.
Pros
Decent compensation for the region
Cons
Extremely poor management, lack of leadership, working conditions
