Very good for starting to mid-level careers.
SR.Procurement Lead /Senior Sourcing (Current Employee) –  Edgewood, MDJuly 3, 2018
Smiths has been plagued with a high level of personnel turnover at all levels.
Smiths USA has had 5 presidents in 6 years. The current management seems to be making great progress in moving the company in a competitive marketplace and focusing the employees on obtaining set goals.

Service Engineer, Technical Support (Former Employee) –  Edgewood, MDApril 22, 2018
Out of Control. Mangement far too removed from reality. Company is in over its head and refuses to hire enough people to perform work correctly. Was not worth getting sick over.

Contractor (Former Employee) –  Edgewood, MDApril 12, 2018
I was a contractor for Smiths for nearly three years. Miserable is the best way to describe the average day. Managers can be demeaning to employees with no fear of punishment. HR will not support employees.

Bad Manager

The Job was good and I enjoyed the daily activities. The manager like to bully people an harass employees. Each day it felt like you were going to lose your job at any minute.

Do not work here if seeking work/life balance and a positive culture
Field Service Technician (Current Employee) –  San Diego, CANovember 30, 2017
This company has a very negative work culture that is dominated by getting numbers and metrics up at any cost. The management team is high on nepotism and advancing "friends" over those who have the qualifications.
There is no balance with personal life and it is very difficult to plan ahead for personal things. This is a bad company to work for in the field if you have a family. The local regional managers do no care about peoples families, rest, fatigue or time off.
Managers will often request workers to do illegal things or dangerous tasks without proper assistance or rest in order to satisfy HQ demand for contract completion.
The pay is excellent due to the excessive overtime but eventually will wear you down and is not worth it.
Pros
Compensation is good
Cons
Culture is negative and hostile, do not value people and their personal lives

Decent workplace but alot of change happening
Human Resources Intern (Former Employee) –  Newark, CANovember 20, 2017
While interning with Smiths Detection the atmosphere was welcoming and I was given tasks every week. They are currently undergoing construction as well as an acquisition though, so the physical work space was a bit unorganized and there was some tension regarding job security. I'm pretty sure the new management are discontinuing the intern program, but I could be wrong. I enjoyed the tasks given to me and gained a ton of applicable HR experience.
Pros
Donuts/fruit on Fridays, solid 401(K) plan for full-timers, newly decorated upstairs work space
Cons
Acquisition stress, job security concerns, slight lack of communication within certain departments, lack of rooms for private meetings

Production Assembler (Former Employee) –  Edgewood, MDSeptember 5, 2017
This place is just awful. Management their has no ideal what they are doing. The last few years they were running on a pharmaceutical license because someone cut and pasted there government compliance application from the internet. They say their products are made in America when really they're made in a third World country ship to America where they put just enough parts to get by saying there made in the USA. always short on parts because they don't pay their vendors on time. They don't keep upper management for more then a year. The union there is a joke!! If your boss doesn't like you they will come up with way to get rid of you "seen that go on myself for 4 years" Coworks talk about everyone behind there backs it's like high school. For government control building they don't keep a log of the trucks that come in and out of there. Also since it's a union people are always being moved around that why they have so many problems with their products.

Good place to work with good people
District Service Manager (Current Employee) –  United StatesAugust 31, 2017
Good place to work with good people. However the business has not kept up with its back office business management tools infrastructure.

However, with that said, we get the information that we need to operate the business, just not as effortlessly and automated as a large global business should be operating in 2017.

- Fair and flexible management team.
- Fair pay and benefits.
- Limited career mobility given current structure.
Pros
Fair and Flexible Manager
Cons
Use of antiquated, closed ended disparate business management tools infrastructure

Plant Manager-Site Lead (Current Employee) –  Knoxville, TNAugust 2, 2017
Smiths is a fairly good place to work. The culture is on the rise in a positive fashion. Employees are engaged and eager to do well and achieve success. The organization as a whole is in its infancy in the lean manufacturing process and is making great strides to work on improvements and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. I rather enjoy the majority of the folks I work with.
Pros
Reasonable expectations, listening management
Cons
work life balance, some silo'd functions

Too Tight Of An Environment.....
Contract Senior Electro-Mechanical Designer (Former Employee) –  Edgewood, MDJuly 21, 2017
You HAD to be out of the building by 5:00 PM or you would get into trouble!!! You HAD to watch what you said to certain people or you could get fired!!! In essence, you HAD to watch yourself on whatever you were doing or talking to or you would be shown the door without hesitation!!!
Pros
Canadian Geese were nearby.

Production Assembler (Former Employee) –  Edgewood, MDJuly 15, 2017
I loved the work I was doing. I liked most of the people there. Supervisors were ok. Upper management seemed like they didn't care about the workforce. They were not very forthcoming about work coming into the plant. I have been laid off twice now. I am stressed out because of it.
Pros
Loved the work and the benefits
Cons
Stressful because you never know if you have a job to go to the next day

Exciting and challenging place to work
Field Service Engineer III (Current Employee) –  Washington, DCMay 4, 2017
Good pay and a challenging work environment. There is also an excellent work and life balance. I plan or retiring here. The work day is relaxed and as long as you finish your assignments, management leaves you alone. There is plenty of opportunities for overtime and the job security is excellent. You need to be squeaky clean to get hired. Great company with a bright future.
Pros
Great pay and the ability to promote
Cons
Long vetting process
