Horrible place to work.
CNC Operator (Former Employee) –  Cottondale, ALJuly 8, 2018
Management is non existent and when they are there is only to give you a hard time and lie. They promise many things when you start at Smith's training, fun place to work, great advancement opportunities, relaxed, and transparent. None of these things exist here. There is no pay structure or any direction. Absolutely no training or growth. Super stressful becuase of the constant negativity. Pay is horrible unless $0.30 a year in raise is good to you. You have no voice or opinion here. Best not take more than 10 minutes on your 2 breaks you get a day on a 10 or 12 hour shift. Lunch is 30 minutes so you better bring your own unless your management who constantly takes 1 1/2 to 2 hour lunches and leaves at 3:00pm every day. They think they are the "bees knees" but if that were the case why do they lose 15+ operators a year on a staff of only around 40. It's not just me I promise everyone here doesn't like it. When you start you think you are the luckiest person alive but you soon figure out that you aren't. They are Constantly making perverted sexual references (management) and cussing at employees and if you say anything you will be wrote up/ fired. If you can find somewhere else to work go with it I promise you that you will regret working here.
Pros
Nice coworkers
Cons
Management no direction unorganized lies

Machinist
CNC Machinist (Former Employee) –  Cottondale, ALFebruary 22, 2018
Management is horrible (Arch should’ve did a clean removal of all upper personnel). Don’t trust HR, don’t expect to go talk in private without expecting backlash from it(no confidentiality). There is no job security, unless you are willing to be a yes man. You are not going to advance in the company, unless you are part of the buddy system(there is no equality). Good stepping stone to get experience. The turnover rate is extremely high. The environment is stressful, due to being micromanaged. As long as your work area is clean, they don’t care how good of a machinist you are(it’s all about appearance). Not transparent to employees, so everybody is left in the dark about their future. If it wasn’t for the pay(benefits) and the 3 days off, wouldn’t be worth it. Has potential to be a great place to work, if they make some changes in the front office. Once was a great place to work, before the people in charge now was given free range on power.
Pros
The machinist are easy going. The work is really easy. pays decent .
Cons
Management is terrible. Too much of a buddy system . Low moral .

Terrible
Machine Operator (Former Employee) –  Cottondale, ALAugust 10, 2017
Immediate supervisor was great but company culture was toxic. Thought things would change when the company was sold after CEO ran it into the ground but no dice.

Mind-boggling how a place can have great workers, great machines, decent pay but when leadership is clueless the ship is adrift. It was frustrating to see bad decisions made day after day with no end in sight. If you're desperate and need a paycheck it's a living so long as you don't question authority.
Pros
Great facility and fair pay
Cons
Everything else

Good place to gain real world experience.
Cost Accoutant Intern (Former Employee) –  Cottondale, ALJune 7, 2017
Gained a lot of real world experience during my internship.
Typical day for a cost accountant intern was fairly easy.
The Controller that oversaw operations was a good mentor.

Owner Operated
CNC Operator/Machinist (Former Employee) –  Cottondale, ALOctober 14, 2015
A typical day at Smiths is Meeting every morning before you start your day. Load and Unload Machines. If you are not a machinist it doesnt matter, they will train you. Clean machine shop. Work can sometimes be monotonous but not hard work. Smiths is Aero-Space certified so if you do not like low tolerances or lots of paper work, then this might not be the job for you. Most all the people working there are good people and willing to help you if needed. Management is ok. Its family operated. The Smiths are very good people. The hardest part of the job is keeping up with all the changing processes for paperwork. And (while I was there) poor communication between the floor and engineering and/or scheduling. Maybe they have corrected by now. The most enjoyable by far is the co-workers. Over all its a good place to work. If you are wanting to do machine work its a great place to learn or hone your skills. Clean atmosphere and controlled work environment. Pay is good as well.
Pros
Pay, Clean environment, great co-workers
Cons
Sometimes monotonous work, communication
