Exhausting and Diligent work place that has no room for error.
- A typical day at work would consist of coming in early and setting up terminal and queuing for disembarking and embarking guests throughout the day. From assigning staff positions to running the operation and keep track of logistics. We resolve any issues that we might face, due to it being a ship, everything must be "ship-shape" no room for error.
- I learned how to deal with irritate and uncontrollable situations. For example; taking the appropriate course of action once someone has fallen on a escalator to ensure their safety and amongst the rest of the population. I also learned how to become a strong speaker and anticipating any issues before they occur.

- Management had some kinks between hierarchy. Trainers were not very loyal to their supervisors and will tend to overstep them and make calls not qualified/cleared from higher rank.

- Work place culture is dramatic and exhausting.

- The hardest part of the job is waking up at the crack of dawn.

- The most enjoyable part is making someones day. They are going on vacation and boarding the ship is the first they will remember and start their story with. I absolutely loved the sensation of making someones week from good to great!
Pros

Cons
No breaks, Poor management, stressful and standing up on feet for 10 hours.

Unprofessional
Training was not very good. Management not very friendly and disorganized. Payroll, time sheets, are not available and you sign into a 3 ring binder. They missed my first 2 days of work and it took over a month to resolve. Missing someone’s pay should have been a concern but even corporate was little help. In Los Angeles it’s seasonal and they have very few ships each month. The other shore company is so much better organized, very friendly and produces a better product. After this payday situation I won’t work for them again.

Great learning environment.
Fast paced environment, you get to meet all kinds of walks of life. Management are helpful and positive. Great company to work for! The hardest part of the job at times is the overwhelming part of embarking a ship, many people and crowd control can be a little stressful. Yet once team work and patients throughout the team, embarkation is always a success.

Easy job to get and keep
Everyday is a bit different from the previous day of work where you might be reporting in checking guest in the whole day or checking passports the next. There is something new almost everyday and keeps you on your toes.

Less than 1 Star
I wish I could give SMS less than one star, they are an awful corporation with no value or interest in their employees wellbeing. Your pay is horrible, you are asked to stand for long periods of time without a break, and must tolerate the disrespectful supervisors.
There is no drive for anyone to excel and do their best at their job because they don't reward excellent work. Their career opportunities are murky, they promote the least qualified and unprofessional individuals.

Whatever you do, do not work here. Run away as fast as possible.

The worst job ever!
There are some positives to this job, they can be very accommodating to your availability. It is an extremely flexible job for students or for those with other jobs.
You also get to meet guests from all over the world, who can be very nice. This teaches you a great deal of how to communicate with people. Finally, the staff at the office are wonderful (HR, Scheduling), they are extremely friendly and helpful.

Everything else from here goes downhill! To begin with, the pay here at SMS is disgraceful for the amount of the work they expect you to put into your task. The company makes MILLIONS of dollars from the contracts, yet can't even afford a $ 0.50 raise.

Notwithstanding, the supervisors at the terminals, especially those for the Carnival terminals are downright rude, demeaning and ungrateful. They will blame you when something goes wrong although they ordered you to conduct such task. They will also discipline you in front of ALL guests. They are humiliating and downright disrespectful. Of course not all supervisors and leads are like this awful. But most are!

There is a lack of communication between all the operations within SMS, from the headquarters, to the management at the pier. They don't seem to communicate very well with the staff. They live in their own bubbles and care very little for their employees, unless you make a mistake, which they are quick to communicate.

Also, when you sign the contract, you are guaranteed a 15 minute paid break, however some supervisors and leads will refuse to give you a break after standing for over 6 hours since very early in

Don't Work Here!
The management and supervisors are extremely disrespectful.. They will humiliate you in front of all the guests.
They are rude and should be better trained how to handle their co-workers and the guests.

The pay is also very bad for the amount of work you need to do on a daily basis.

A lot of walking and standing for many hours and you will be refused breaks! Sometimes you will be standing in the sun wearing a hot jacket for hours, or be "demanded" to lift heavy signs.

The management needs to be reshuffled, mostly fired and employees need a raise!
Pros
Flexible
Cons
Management, Pay

SMS Review
This is a job that will work with your hours while you are in college. I recommend this job for college students, because they only hire part-time workers. If you are looking for a full-time position, this is not the place for you!
Pros
Very understanding
Cons
Low hours
